How to Play Classic Atari Games on your iPad

Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed

Last night, a long-standing dream of mine came true: Atari released pretty much its entire classic library on the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. I am beyond ecstatic. If you’ve ever heard me talk about gaming, you’ll know that I’m a casual gamer. I don’t get into first-person shooters and I don’t lose myself in RPGs. I do, however, love a great old-fashioned game Pong.

Atari’s Greatest Hits is absolutely free in the app store! Pong comes pre-installed at no cost and additional games are relatively inexpensive. You can pay for game packs or buy the entire library for only fifteen bucks. I have a feeling that this thing will end up being the highest-grossing app for the entire year. Yes, people, I really just predicted that this will beat out your beloved Angry Birds.

There are 18 arcade titles and 92 games from the Atari 2600. You’ll enjoy favorites such as Missile command, Breakout, Centipede and even Asteroids. Certain games – like Warlords – give support for Bluetooth multiplayer mode. From what I’ve found already, the games which are played using some type of paddle work very well. Those which would have used a joystick seem to be just a tad jerky.

You’ll find the original box art, along with several different ways of searching through your collection. Thumb through the tiles, click a button to see your recently played games or list them in alphabetical order. It will only take you a moment to find exactly what you’re looking for to quench your classic gaming thirst.

One game that I’ve noticed is missing makes me rather sad. The title began with the letter “E” and was played on the Atari 2600. Can you guess what that is?

If you have long since forgotten how to play or beat your old favorite, you can read through the game’s manual right on your device. Those are included with your purchase so you’ll have them whenever you may need some additional help.

Which title was your favorite back in the Atari days? How quickly will you be downloading this app?

Monopoly for the iPad Released By EA Games

The big iPad screen is perfect for playing Monopoly. EA has had great success with versions of the game for the iPhone and iPod touch, so it only makes sense to bring it to the iPad, as well. The Monopoly HD game allows iPad users to connect wirelessly to other iPad game players via a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connection. Another cool thing is that iPad users can play locally against people running the Monopoly HD on their iPhone or iPod devices, and not just the iPad.

The game mimics the real thing beautifully on the iPad — thanks to iPad’s awesome display. Shake your device to “roll” the 3D dice. Tap the screen to manage your properties. Building a house on Baltic Avenue, taking a “Chance,” or opening the “Community Chest” are easy with intelligent design and intuitive controls. Play through three levels of difficulty and save games in progress. Also customize the number of players, the “house rules,” and even the game environment.

EA Mobile Summer Game Lineup

EA Mobile has officially announced their upcoming late-summer lineup of new game offerings. Since the iPhone was first released, EA Mobile has been one of the leading players in the gaming apps field. Popular games from the company have included Scrabble, Tetris, Monopoly and Battleship. In 2009, their game The Sims 3 was the #1 best-selling game on the app store.

Following are nine of the new games that you can expect to see hitting iTunes in the near future:

This iteration is purported to be even better than before! In Madden NFL 11, fans and gamers will be able to play BOTH sides of the ball using Total Defensive Control. You’ll enjoy less time in the playbook and more time on the field with the new GameFlow feature. You can now draw Hot Routes everywhere which literally draws a player’s movements on the field pre-snap. This creates the play YOU want to run. This game is slated to be released this fall.
  • Reckless Racing – Reckless Racing will be released for the iPhone and iPad. The game features roaring engines, squealing tires and amazing graphics. It mixes top-down racing game play with engaging multiplayer features. The balanced controls let you skid, slip and slide through some gorgeous tracks. It takes awesome advantage of the phone’s new Retina display. Players can choose from 55 of the most popular colleges or create a new one. Lead them all the way to victory in the BCS National Championship. Glow Burst for the iPad

Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed

Glow Burst is a highly addictive game that relies on a quick mind and even faster fingers. Click each glow pad as fast as you can from the lowest to the highest number in each set. Each glow burst earns you more points – and gives you extra time. Each round you complete gets you even more bonus time. This may sound simple, but I can assure you that it’s NOT.

There are three different levels of play, and the background music will speed up as your time starts to run out. I like the fact that there is a global “score board” even if I know I’ll never see my name up in those particular lights.

This game is not only a fun time-waster, it should also help improve your hand-eye coordination. I think, though, that mine still needs a lot of work.

Tap Tap Radiation

Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed

Tap Tap Radiation is a free iPad app in the iTunes store. I admit to getting completely caught up in this game. It’s more fun and addictive than you might realize! I even sang along with it!

You can play along with a song already in the library, or create a whole new track of your own. You can even download about 30 free tracks in the app store, including songs by Pink and Lady GaGa!

With four difficulty levels to choose from, Tap Tap Radiation creates intense single player action for music enthusiasts and gamers of any age. At this point in time, the game is only a single-player one. However, perhaps in the future we’ll see the ability to play against others. For now, you can always grab a friend and have them help you since the iPad screen is so big!

If you know of other cool games for the iPad, let me know. I’d love to check them out and possibly review them here on my blog.

Gaming on the iPad

Who says you can’t game on the iPad? I’m here to tell you you’re wrong, and Mark is proving it. The games that he demonstrates in this video all have “cousins” for the iPhone. The developers of each app have changed things up a bit for the iPad versions in order to take full advantage of the additional screen real-estate and processing power.

The first game he tried out is Real Racing HD. Keep in mind that when playing a game on the iPad, you may want to hold the device with the Home button to your right. This way, your fingers won’t accidentally cover up the speakers.

Watching Mark play this game, you can tell how awesome the graphics are on the iPad screen. Everything is crisp and clear, and it’s so easy to see what you’re doing. Even when playing N.O.V.A., the picture is as clean as a whistle. I was surprised myself by how beautiful the display is. I honestly didn’t expect it to be quite as good as it is.

It’s not as difficult to play games on a device like the iPad as you might think it is. Some people are used to using a mouse or game controller, and find themselves unable to easily switch to using only their fingers. You have to do what’s best for you… but I think you’ll be missing out if you don’t give gaming on the iPad a shot.

Flight Control HD on the iPad

The flight-simulation game you already love to play on your iPhone is now coming to your iPad. With the large iPad screen, the game is now bigger, clearer and has more room to perform chaotic landing sequences.

Flight Control HD has stayed in the top ten since the iPad’s App Store went live yesterday. The viewing real estate on the iPad allows for some new gameplay variations over the iPhone version. There is a new co-op multiplayer function by sharing the same device. There’s a split-screen mode, and new airfields – including a Snow airfield with variable wind direction.

One of the best new features of this game, though, has to be the fact that you can play it in 3D. You’ll need to grab your own glasses, since you can’t exactly download them with the app. When you choose the new airfield map with the 3D glasses on your face, you’ll be able to see planes flying around in full depth illusion! How cool is that?

I have a feeling that this may be one of the most downloaded apps over the weekend. Anyone have a spare set of 3D goggles I can borrow?

Air Hockey on the iPad

Air hockey has long been one of those games that everyone seems to enjoy playing. Starting tomorrow, you’re going to be able to play right on your iPad or iPhone. The full app created by Acceleroto will cost only 99 cents, with a free “Gold” version available, as well.

I know the younger generation is going to be all over this app. However, I’m willing to bet that many adults are going to grab this little gem for themselves. Go ahead – admit it. You love air hockey as much now as you did when you were younger. I know I do!

According to the official app description, you will have the ability to play against others via Bluetooth support. Alternatively, you can have two players using the same device. There doesn’t appear to be any type of way to play against a fake opponent, which is a shame.

When your iPad shows up on your doorstep tomorrow and you’re busy downloading apps for it, be sure to grab Air Hockey for your collection.

Thanks to TUAW for bringing this app to our attention.
