One of our geeks, Devin, asked:
Hey Chris, I know you’re a busy guy – but I was wondering if you could help steer me in the right direction as far as web hosting goes. I am having a real hard time deciding on the right one. I am with Yahoo Small Business Hosting now and, well… it just plain sucks! Yahoo is not very compatible with Joomla, and does not accept .htaccess files. I have seen “blue” in a lot of places, but it seems cheap. I would be willing to pay more for a reliable host. Also one last thing, I would prefer if the host would host an unlimited amount of domains.
I passed this to my blog’s host, Evolution Studios. Ryan answered (personally):
Choosing a web host is a very difficult and daunting task indeed. There are so many choices, so many things to consider, and lately anyone with a computer and an Internet connection calls themselves a webhost. Of course, you can go with the larger names like GoDaddy or any one of ten recognizable web hosts. But something you need to keep in mind is that these webhosts might appear cheap, but you also get what you pay for. Many of these companies offer their clients everything under the sun, with the knowledge that the end user isn’t going to use all those resources. Then what happens is a few end users do use all the resources and the server comes to a crashing halt. The phrase in the web tech world is known as “Over Selling”.
I don’t know many places out there that allow for an unlimited amount of domain names, but if it is important to you, it would be worth your time to do a little research into companies that might. I run a company that also specializes in Web Hosting and while you might like what you see or need just a little more, I am always willing to work out a deal with Chris Pirillo fans. Even if you don’t like what you see, but have a question about another web host, I have been doing this for over 5 years and have heard things and know people that can give you an honest insight into the web host you are considering. Either way, good luck with your search for a web host and I look forward to hearing from you if you have any questions!
Just when you thought that Web hosts were a commodity. A good one costs you a lot – and a bad one costs you even more.
