You’re Never Too Young to Start Goal Setting
‘psionicarchon’ responds to my earlier video asking Are Computers for Kids?
I used to be a frequent chat member, not sure if anyone ever noticed me stopping by. You had asked at the end of your video if there was anyone out there any kids you had said. I am currently 16 years old I will be turning 17 tomorrow and while I do enjoy excessive gaming that desire to gaming led me down a very different path. It led me into the realm of server hosting.
Give or take at about 7 years of age I was building and taking apart computers my first main pc was an old Packard Bell with a 75 megahertz processor and 2 megabytes of memory but it served well to get me involved and knowledgeable on basic to average computing.
Back to the servers, I got sucked into a game called unreal tournament 2004, downloaded a demo of the game, absolutely loved it, went out the next day and purchased the full version and made sure all of my friends did the same thing. At first I was just interested with playing the game I never payed much attention to the actual servers I was playing on until I came across a few that supported mods. That got me thinking and I said to myself.. well why don’t I put up my own fun server. I spent about a week grabbing every mod I could find for the game, setting up custom systems for example “zounds” which played audio based on what you typed in and played it over the server if you enabled it. If I said hello1 it would play a clip of Homer Simpson. I had also gone through the trouble of putting in extra maps and a fully functional voting system that allowed players to turn modifications on and off, switch maps, and even vote to have an annoying player kicked from the server. It was a huge success and I had so much fun doing it from then on I kept improving it and branching out.
I set up a voice chat system, made a pay pall account, and had began to send out fliers in the local lan center. I was doing this at the early age of 14.
My next step. World of Warcraft, when this came out unreal kind of died or began to slowly so of course I had to branch out which I did. Through early c++ an emulator was written that allowed people to host their own world of Warcraft servers and I jumped all over that. It even let me get my feet wet in putting up websites as a basic web server was built into the emulator.
Now at pretty much age 17 I have spent the past few weeks working day and night in getting back into that server hosting environment. I put together a website with a few web pages, a blog, and a set of forums run on the vbulletin software. All this is hosted by me.
Your show gave me some inspiration to throw up or work on putting up a live streaming broadcast of my own covering much of the same material, tech stuff. It will also give the people that decide to be part of and help move along this community I’ve been working so hard to set up.
This takes me to the last bits of this long email, what exactly my plans are at age 17. I hope to one day be able to offer a web hosting service that is not only 100% free for its users but virtually restriction less. As you know most free hosting services force you to use a specific domain name (as you will see by my current domain). They also force you to put their adds up on your website or whatever program it is they are hosting for you. I hope to provide a means around that.
If people need a website of their own design put up or perhaps one of my design based on their ideas or whatever it is they ask me to make I will do it and I will host it rule free, restriction free, and hopefully hassle free. The only adds that will be up are adds on “my” website aka the main page.
Game server, Vent or VoIP server - I hope to be able to host it free of charge.
Going back to the live stream it will allow the people using my service to communicate with me easily, live, and nearly all the time. I will broaden the web page to accompany multiple streams at a single time, couple of close friends who participating in helping me out with this whole thing.

This guy should be a role model to many young people that are into technology and have dreamed about this. I know I have dreamed about running a game server but seems like a lot of work. I may look into it now.

Well there you go parents are allways telling kids that playing all those games isn’t good for you ,But looks like they should follow their heart just as people tell adults to do.Something good will always happen.

Oh man, this kid is awesome! A lot of young people don’t think about their future and wait ’till they are close to the end of high school. I waited too long to set goals and am now having to pick up the pace at the age of 28. I know too many young people that have no idea what they want to do with their life when they get out of highschool or even middle school. I know that sounds too young, but in my opinion, young people need to start thinking about their future as early as middle school. The few young people that have thought about their future and set goals are smart and really on top of their game. i know one dude that is 19 and already has his own telecom business that serves over 200 companies. It’s people like him and psionicarchon that drive the tech world further and further in progress. Fresh minds with lots of ideas.

Wow, When I read this I feel like it was me!
When I was young, I use to fondle with computers, Yes , I hugged them and embraced them and anything else I could do!
I then started to play a game, which now I wonder WHY I played the game,(doesn’t everyone after they stop playing the game? They start bashing it, etc.) Well I played runescape nearly as soon as it was released to the public, it was a game where you could increase skills for fighting, cooking, etc. Basically, it is a RPG.
Well, I played it for a couple years, during that time I played game as soon as I got home from school, not doing homework and not studying as much as I should of.
I then got into webhosting like said in the blog, I also did. I currently run a webhosting business(FAR from a company :P), I am still in school so it is hard for me to actually answer problems from clients on time, which I do feel bad about, so I do have someone to help me out but he isn’t that skilled in the webhosting/technical field(he is a designer)
So, I guess in essence I did turn my life around very much, and I forgot to mention I played WOW but only for about 2 months, and my character wasn’t even a high level, so blah.
So yes, now I am 17 years old and I have a webhosting business, I enjoy helping people with technical problems, I am trying to get into web designing, although I am not that good right now…
But, this is exactly right about the blog, you are never too young to start goal setting. Of course, almost everyone sets goals and never accomplishes them, but it is good to dream also, right? Haha.
Thanks for this blog, it gave me a real insight!

People always seam to think kids can’t do anything, and then the kids believe it, I hear kids say all the time that their too young to set goals and start going after them.

I think that setting goals is the only way to make our society move forward. Without goals, what do we strive for? Nothing! No matter your age, setting goals are a good habit. I think that you are never too old or young to start establishing goals. After all, you can be or do anything if you strive hard enough to achieve that goal.

Yea, you should always start young for most things. When you will find that you will not have much time to do the things you wish you could have done.

It is no doubt a reality that computers are making their ways into the lives of young ones. I started learning programming around 6 years old and continued teaching myself languages and general computers. Around age 15 i started making money online through advertising, programming, web development services, and hosting. I am now 20 and still spending most my time online. Back in my days of public school, everyone thought i was a genius/prodigy, but nowadays its becoming very commonplace for just kids to pick up on the latest technologies. I think its great!

I sent Chris an email yesterday. But computers are for kids but it needs to be controlled. One of the best things you can give a kid access to is a computer because we are becoming more and more dependent on computers in the workplace and giving a child access to a computer is one of the best modern life skills you can give to a child.
I was so glad I was given access to a computer from around 6 or 7, and I was given my own computer when I was in Year 8 (2nd year of secondary school).
