Xbox Replacement Cord
I submitted my serial number a few days ago, to get the Xbox Replacement Cord. Why is a new Xbox power cord needed? According to Xbox, “the replacement power cords are designed to protect consumers and their Xbox consoles from rare electrical component failures that can pose a fire hazard.” Has anybody really been burned yet?
Microsoft is providing new power cords at no charge to replace the cords that originally came with some Xbox consoles. You will need your Serial Number and Manufacture date to verify if your Xbox Console requires a replacement cord. Fewer than one in 10,000 consoles have experienced these component failures. In almost all instances, any damage caused by these failures was contained within the console itself or limited to the tip of the power cord at the back of the console.
I also found this part of the FAQ a bit humorous: “I received my replacement cord, and it was damaged. What should I do?” Run away, that's my answer. I've got the replacement cord in hand now. I suppose I better swap it soon, eh?

Well, based on 14.1 million recalls, around 1500?

Actually.. not a “fire risk” per se but I did use a cord from a laptop power supply to power my xbox and it blew the power supply up. It was stinky. The xbox has a proprietary power cord. This, at least, is NOT propaganda.

I thought this was a scam the first time I got the email. I deleted it. Woops.

Power cord replacement or not - it's irrelevant …. I bought an xbox from the 1st skid coming into ToysRUs the first time it hit the shelves - price about 450 Cdn. Then - in the 2 years that followed - bought more controllers, dvd kit, hifi kit, steering wheel - and about 25 games … great investment …. HOWEVER - now - dvd is completely useless - my kids don't even want to play it anymore because they've just grown totally fed up with games freezing with dirty disk errors (ie - put Halo2 in - 1st time - reports a dirty disk….) - movies - just as bad - nothing like watching a movie - and it freezing half way …. so … basically it's now a nice paperweight that needs dusting all the time.
Maybe I'll just hope my cord is defective and it does burn the house down - by the looks of it - that'll be the only way I'll get a free dvd replacement…
I do love the xbox - don't get me wrong - but what's to love when it doesn't work?

Doesn't that cord scream “military issue”? That's not the cord that comes with the current run of Xboxes.
I think the pyromaniac lives inside your Xbox, not the AC adaptor. The new blackjack-like power block just helps keep him in line.

Downsides to olde xboxes- Bad dvd drive later on and now bad power supply(now fixed with replacement)
Upside- Seagate 10gb hard drives are in most v1.0-v1.2 xboxes. Just learn to unlock it and you have 2gbs more then everyone else.
