Would You Like to Try the Bumptop Beta for Windows?

We’ve been doing GoToMeeting sessions again. I thought this time around, I’d ask presenters to show off different tips and tricks they have. Marc Billow decided to demonstrate BumpTop for us. You, too, can sign up for a Beta code – without having to wait five months for it! We’re going to be giving away 100 instant access codes so that our community members can help test this out!
BumpTop is a fresh and engaging new way to interact with your computer desktop. You can pile and toss documents like on a real desk. Break free from the rigid and mechanical style of standard point-and-click desktops. Interact by pushing, pulling and piling documents with elegant, self revealing gestures. BumpTop’s stunning interface makes clever use of 3D presentation and smooth physics-based animations for an engaging, vivid user experience.
As Marc shows you, you can literally make your virtual desktop look more like a real desktop. It’s a lot of fun to play with, and very addictive. Instead of losing everything with a standard Windows desktop, you can make things stand out the way you are comfortable with using BumpTop. You can create tidy piles with documents and icons, move them anywhere on your desktop, and even let everything have a ‘messy’ look.
So as I said, we’re giving away 100 instant-access codes so that you can run this utility now. If you want to be one of these people, you need to subscribe to my YouTube channel, and subscribe to Marc’s YouTube channel. You also have to leave a comment in this blog post on my website. Make sure you leave a good comment, which is something that adds to the discussion here. If you leave an insipid comment such as “wow this is cool!”, your comment will be deleted and you will not be eligible.
Thank you so much to Tim and the team at Bumptop for putting this together for us!

As the way we interact with computers changes, I wonder if something similar to this will become the norm as it’s more like real life. I think that an interface like this would be great for a touch based system or even a gesture based system.

This is nothing new, back in 1994 my first PC (a packard bell *shudder*) came with an application called “Navigator” that sat between you and the windows 3.11 interface behind it.
Items on your PC were represented by objects in the alternative interface and “spaces” were personalised areas with a “kids space” designed to have engaging imagery such as a jungle or space environment.
Interesting that this concept is being looked at once again.

I find that for vista, if you have a slow system turing aero off helps a lot. So having this would be awsome so you dont have to reply on explorer.exe for desktop which I don’t like. :P

I think programs like Bumptop,Beryl, and Compiz are the wave of the future considering the newest PC’s have all this amazing graphics power that is only being tapped by the most extreme games or 3D programs. I’m just suprised that Microsoft hasn’t done something like this already. They will probably just want till one company creates the best application and then buy the company. By the way, the link to Mark’s Channel is wrong, his youtube name is tornados65

Talking about Bumptop, I have seen a video of it around 4-6 months ago, and I thought it was fake.
The whole idea of this is really cool, and imagine what you can do with multi-touch! The productivity would increase ten-fold, I predict, and working would be more enjoyable. :)

Is it really necessary to make the PC desktop more cluttered like our real world desktops? Having seen only the video it seems as though BumpTop would reduce efficiency since it seems harder to distinguish between files of the same type without their file name being as apparent as usual although it does seem like a nice idea. Is this the case for those that have used it?

hey chris some questions for you.
how much faster is the new beta compared to the old one? what features are planned? and where do you think desktops are gonna end up in the next 10 years?
hopefully they’ll move away from the old grid based layout of the older ones. and maybe they’ll add some features such as gadgets or something like micrsoft’s surface table.

This looks like a great idea and after watching this video, I went on and watched a few more videos, including some demos.
This really should be included as standard in operating systems, and I suppose would reinforce Vista’s “fun” approach to work. It looks like something that actually would be on Mac OSX as standard.
Great video!

I think BumpTop will just kind of make it fun to play around with your desktop more. I find myself just bored sometimes wanting something to play around with. This sounds like the perfect thing. Plus it does it job. I also recommend using RocketDock. You can see it being used, and download it here:
http://rocketdock.com/ You get your own dock, just like on a Mac.

They should add a a clock on the wall or floor it would be cool. And i want to know why the can give way 100 codes, but it takes 5 months to get a code by request. Also they should add a window that you can look out and see the real weather. I wonder if a 100 people will even post!?! But for i hope to win one because i cant wait for the many more theme to to aprove mine requested. Hope i win. :-)

This is very cool. I seen this live the other day. Looks like a fun 3d desktop app for Windows. I like the fact that you can put icons on the wall. It appears like it would save a lot of space on the desktop and I like to keep my desktop fairly clean. I have both Mac and PC and I would actually really like to have both versions. Very cool app.

I had seen the demonstration in one of the TED videos a while ago, but I didn’t really remember.
The idea itself is nice and fun, but I’m more worried about workflow and ease to find stuff. On Vista right now I can preview my documents before opening it, or search for strings, words or whatever to find what I’m looking for.
And same goes for the mac
However, how do you find stuff on this environment if all you have is all those similar-looking icons. You may have around 10 PDF documents and they all look the same, so how do you know which one you need? Is there a way to search that document/picture/whatever are you looking for? Can you create “stacks” or “piles” of documents representing the actual folders inside your computer, for example one for your personal stuff, homeworks, projects… most (if not all) of us have hundreds of documents and the last thing we need is an environment that will have hundreds of icons lying around.
So unless bumptop can handle that many files in a eficient way, it will become one more of those nice ideas nobody will ever really use on a daily basis.
Just my two cents

Hm Bumptop looks fun, but I wonder if it can be used like a gallery, or if there is some sort of feature to use it to showcase things. Either way it’s definitely a step in the direction of variety for desktops especially considering that it looks really simple to use. I also wonder if you can make your own skins for it. Either way thanks Chris, thanks Mark for showing off the app.

My cousin told me about Bumptop a little over two months ago. He showed me it on his vista machine, and it is by far the coolest thing I have ever seen happen to a desk top. With one click of a button all of his icons would spread out and then with another they would pile up in alphabetical order. It’s some pretty neat stuff. I didn’t download it but like some others expressed, I noticed that it caused vista to run a little slow on my cousin’s PC. although he just has a best buy run of the mill PC’s with an integrated graphics chip. So that might be his problem. I think that Bumptop has an amazing concept and that it could really be utilized to make our PC’s just a little more customizable and tailored to our individual needs and wants.

Hi. I had heard about this bumptop a long time ago… I am happy they are finally making it available and and even happier that they are making a mac version too.
Apple has just filled a patent for a 3d desktop that looks A LOT like bumptop… I do not know if they will get the patent and then just destroy this emerging company with a lawsuit! (I really hate these patents hawks)
I really like my mac laptop but as microsoft has copied many mac os features I think now apple is doing the same to other smaller companies. :S
Cheers,

I have seen other things like this, but this looks like to be the best one. I bet this will look great on the Mac and Windows, I use Windows the most. I would think they would come out with a Linux version since its openGL as you said in the video. I would love to give a try!
I would also recommend Rocketdock for Windows, I have been using it on Windows for a while. You can customize the dock and everything. :)

Well, this service could absolutely help me out, as I always tend to have a cluttered desktop whenever I’m on Windows, since I don’t use it as much anymore since I have me Mac. It’s always hard to find the files I want to open, because I usually have to go through so many folders, so this utility may help me out by sorting out some of this stuff. I like this, because the desktop now turs into a 3D environment, which is something that could be very useful to me. Thanks, Mark & Chris!

This is pretty interesting. Linux has a goey interface that allows you to have 3D affects like this. I discovered Bumptop around a year ago and have been considering signing up for the beta, but it sounded like it wouldn’t be coming out for a while for public use. I’ve been waiting for this sort of interface for a while. It seemed that developers had given up on giving us more intuitive ways to interact with our computers. The “desktop” was a nice concept but it doesn’t really work like my real desktop. I’m not the tidiest person, but piles seem to work for me.

I really like how this is a fun program that does indeed correspond with the desktop. I wonder how many megabytes of ram this will take, due to the fact that my Windows Vista on my Vaio takes up approximately 512mb by its self. I saw this program a couple weeks a go and put in for a code for the beta and haven’t really received anything yet. I think it is crazy how Chris has the power of getting 100 haha, but I do hope to get a code. This program would work great with Vista and could give it a little more spark, due the fact it isn’t out for OS, but will be soon.

Using Bumptop how can you see the difference between two files that open with the very same application? To me it seems that there are no title on any of the files in Bumptop. is that the case?
Do any of you Bumptop users find Bumptop a worthy successor of the traditional 2D desktop found in most operating systems today?
Can you make a folder using Bumptop or is a folder in Bumptop simply a pile of files? if you can, then how do you make a typical folder using Bumptop and how well is it implemented?

This seems like a really cool utility I’ve tried so many different desktop utilities from themes to other kinds of 3D environment. But they all seemed really clunky is the word Chris likes i think. This one seems smoother and more robust compared to the others I’ve seen and tested before. Also my desktop is already getting a bit boring so trying this out would be fun. It’s amazing to me that no one has designed an intuitive GUI to organize documents. Windows Explorer is pathetic and only marginally improved in Vista. Even the Finder in MacOS isn’t the most elegant or intuitive work that the Apple UI designers have produced (I hope Snow Leopard helps, given the rumors it’s being Cocoa-fied).
But back to this thread — the Big Question is whether Bumptop and similar breakthrough GUIs eliminate the need to re-invent the file browser altogether?

I’ve been waiting for something like this for a LONG time. My normal desktop is chaotic in a very immaculate way… people gasp, but I know where EVERYTHING is and it works. I would absolutely love my computers desktop to be the same way… believe it or not, it would really streamline my workflow probably.

This seems like a idea that alot of people have had and he was the one who made a move on it. Just hearing about this is awesome. Now the only thing I can think of to make it more real is touch, and I mean if you have lets say a tablet or HP Touchsmart Pc You have like the realest thing right there. All I know for sure is that this is going to be awesome when it comes out.

Bumptop looks like a really nifty program, I thought I saw something like this before but I can’t remember the name. At the moment I use ‘rocketdock’ to sort some of my icons and most of this is only the stuff that I use for my coding. The rest is all found in the Start Menu or Search function in Vista. I would love to try out Bumptop.

I’m glad they are finally thinking outside of the traditional desktop, as in just icons in front of a wallpaper. Now a days, if you are going to be using something like Bumptop you most likely have a computer that is good enough to run something along this nature. I liked the dreamscene thing, with the moving desktops, and this is nice and interactive, could def see liking this if I had a touchscreen,

It makes me happy to see that new things like this continue to be created that are so unique for an OS that’s almost 8 years old. I believe it’s always good to get the most out of computers, and although I have the Windows Vista software sitting next to my computer, I still use XP for this reason as well as for the obvious reason.
Oh and by the way, the GoToMeeting idea you came up with is a cool one!

That looks really cool! It seems the more digital technology progresses, the more like “analog” it gets. We want to stay organized by using today’s digital technology, but have the same old experience as having a hard copy. Apple recently filed a patent for a 3D desktop sort of design. If that is ever released, I would like to see how it compares to this solution. I can’t say I see this as going main stream, but I would defiantly like to give it a look and see how it performs. You never know- i may turn out loving it!

I love how you can stack windows on top of each other that will be nice because I like many other people have a lot of icons on my desktop so that is nice to clean it up! What are my thoughts? Well I think it is going to be a great bit of software that will let you organize and manage your desktop better! I can’t wait for it to come out and I’d love to be a beta tester! Looks pretty great! This is awesome (sorry if that sounds insipid, but I like it) I’ve been trying for years to get something that would allow me to muss up my desktop just like the one in my office. Unlike Michelle, I am actually hoping to get my desktop to look like my desk, this way I can hide the stuff I don’t really want people to see, right in playing site. Awesome. Looking forward to getting a chance to muddy things up..

I remember seeing the initial BumpTop video on youTube around when the MS Surface demos started to do the rounds…. I thought then that BumpTop seemed to be a really cool way to interact with a desktop … with a mouse or with a complete touch experience.
I’d love to try BumpTop to see if it makes the “desktop” metaphor any more real and usable… and maybe one day get to use it on a full touch device – Win7 or Surface ;)

This is interesting.
I think this be very cool to have. Be neat to see how messy and or clean ones desktop would be if it was sitting on a real life desk. I know my desk from time to time can be a bit messy though I keep it clean my desktop is clean or I think its clean. But still would be cool to see just how it would look and to get away from the old boring click and drop way of doing things.
I cant wait till this comes out and try it myself.

This little piece of software only goes to show you that the era of natural computing is ever-so imminent! We will be able to break free from the limits of our keyboards and mice, and we will actually be able to touch the software and it will respond like a human being. I simply cannot wait for this to become mainstream. It’s going to be fantastic!!!

I think that for organized people this kind of software may very well be surplus to requirements. That being said, there are plenty of people like me who use there desktop as a private place to hide their disorganization. It much easier to get away with a messy desktop than a real life messy….errm, desktop.

Coming back to the bumptop app., although this concept is not new, they have a fortunate oppurtunity to develop it with Windows 7 Multi Touch in mind.
Why i would like to have this app is because i would love to get a multi-touch enabled Windows 7 laptop next year, and then, using this app would be something to talk about. Being able to control my desktop, as it if is my study table, would be simply an over the top experience!!

This is actually a nice idea, I personally have a hard time finding things on my desktop, (its WAY too messy.) I’ve seen videos demonstrating this program and signed up for the beta…..still haven”t received a code….

For years, my computer’s desktop has been cluttered…
Not only does this create more organization, but it visually looks great!

I have the beta. Installed the application, rebooted, attempted to start…. and this application completely froze my computer. Hard freeze. Minnesota January kind of freeze.
No log files are generated because of the lock up. No Event Viewer logs. Nothing.
Also, the un-install fails and attempting to reinstall to check for anything needing a repair, well that doesn’t work either.
Since the application adds itself to startup, I had to go into Safe Mode and remove/uncheck the entry from the StartUp tab in msconfig.
I have posted to the BumpTop wiki/forums for any support of suggestion. Nothing has come yet.
I will be trying this on a virtual XP machine just to be sure this doesn’t have something to do with the original install.

Subscribed to lockergnome since last year, Just subbed to Marc. A 3D Interface would be great on any operating system.I don’t know if it will be useful though. So far, I see so many people use Vista and hey don’t even know that they have a flip 3D feature. I hardly use it. I don’t know if Bumptop will be useful. But I am willing to try it. Just hope I among the 100 chosen. I guess Betas aren’t so bad, unlike IE8 Beta. I had to reformat my HD to remove it. Never get IE8. However, the Google Chrome beta was awesome. I hope Bumptop will be a pleasure to beta test. As Marc said, it should be in other OSes besides Windows soon.

I am currently a college student, and i have loaaddsss of stuff on my desktop ranging from games to class work.
With the use of bumptop, I have no doubt that things will be more organized and refreshing. I put some stuff in folders, but i just till have wayy too much stuff, and sometimes hate having to click through folders, so i usually just end up leaving them on the desktop for quick access.

Basically this looks like a mashup between all the OS X goodness, and compiz fusion, so prevalent notably via the Ubuntu distro of Linux.
I would like to try this out, but I fear my nvidia with shared video memory laptop won’t run this that well. Who knows maybe it’ll have some voodoo to work great. Tech voodoo is good… not actual voodoo though… the interweb should have some sort of ramble detection feature and anti-voodoo software. Not anti-software voodoo… but anti-voodoo software… Ahh! Here it goes.

One of my favorite features of bump top is the “Bump Folder.” This will index what is inside a folder on your desktop, and will pile them, even though they are not on your desktop. When you double click, it will expand in a grid, like a regular pile.
Another cool thing about this is the pinups on the sides. It definitely makes the desktop more “personal.” You can add music playlist shortcuts and pin them up, to keep them accessible.
One thing I would like to have it dual monitor support. Currently if you have 2 or more monitors, the bumptop app only resides on the primary monitor, with all the other monitors remain with the old non-bumptoppy desktop.

Bumptop is perfect for users with arthritis. “Drag and sweep” is far easier than clicking when fingers are stiff.
One problem I deal with on a daily basis, after a traumatic brain injury, is in layman’s terms: “out of sight, out of mind”. For example, I have my food on shelves in a closet so that it is all together or I would forget I have the food (I usually don’t remember to look elsewhere). You can imagine what I go through trying to find folders and applications on my computer. I forget which icons I choose for a folder, so I stick to words, but then I am overwhelmed by that …
Anyway, from what I have seen, Bumptop could possibly be a tool that will change “out of sight, out of mind” into “in my sight, in my mind” … and perhaps drastically reduce the time I waste trying to find files and applications.
Thanks for sharing this. I might not have found it on my own (lol).
