Would You Like to Make Money with Music?

How would you like to find an unknown band or musical artist, support them, help them get a recording contract, and then receive a portion of the proceeds from their sales? Is that something you’re interested in? On SellaBand, artists can upload their music, and find supporters.

For the first time fans and Artists can be in business together. Therefore each Artist issues 5,000 so called Parts. Parts cost $10 (plus transaction costs) each. Together Believers have to raise $50,000 to get their Artist of choice in the studio. At any point before your Artist has reached the Goal of $50,000, you can withdraw your Parts and pick a different Artist. You can even get your money back (minus a small transaction fee). It’s your music. It’s your choice.

Once your Artist has raised $50,000 SellaBand will assign an experienced A&R-person to this project. Together with a top Producer, your Artist will record a CD in a state-of-the-art Studio. During the process you will get an exclusive sneak preview of this exciting process.

All advertising revenues generated via SellaBand will be shared equally between the SellaBand Recording Artists, their Believers and SellaBand. The amount of money you and the Artist will get paid depends on the market share the artist has in the total number of downloads on SellaBand.
Three of the songs on the CD will be given away as free Downloads. The other tracks will be sold as paid Downloads for 50 dollarcents each. The net profit of these sales will be split evenly between you, your Artist and SellaBand.

That is very cool. Discover new artists and music, help launch their careers, and make money in the process. It doesn’t get much better than that.

This seems to be the way the music industry is headed, as it allows artists etc to take advantage of the resources record companies traditionally promoted, whilst not having to hope they are the flavour of the month to get signed in the first place - and without essentially have to pay back an advance loan.
There are some alternatives out there, like http://www.slicethepie.com so it just means seeing which ones have enough members to get some bands out there to get publicity for the service and have enough members to reach a tipping point.

Great find Chris!

Thanks for the heads up. You are the cutting edge!

There is a fundamental fault here, the supports/fans of the band get a CD automatically so where do the profits come from?

It’s amazing that the internet has made it so much easier for artists of all kind (visual, musical, etc.) to publish their work, and get their work noticed. Back in the days when the internet didn’t exist (or wasn’t such a big thing), their could have been many talented people, or groups of people that didn’t get their work noticed because they had no way to publish it, or to get it noticed.

That sounds awesome Chris!

Hmmm… This sounds like an easy way to make some cash.

The truth about Sellaband is that it doesn’t work . From the so far invested $700.000 in CD’s only $8000 made it back to the investors . The communication from the staff is worse than the most confesional-*******-staff from majors ever practiced . And within a year it will be over ; there’s almost no income , and the staff are big spenders .
The idea might have worked if some good people were involved , but hey this still is the music industry :P .

HAVE FUN !!! yours Pieps

Hi Chris,
I am a $50,000 artist on Sellaband and think its great you are pointing your viewers/readers towards this. The concept has not only enabled me to record the album I always wanted to, but enabled me to really engage with the people who like my music and have made this happen.

The limited edition version of my album, Until The Morning Light, will be available from November 10th (I think, currently being confirmed). It was produced by the fantastic Tony Platt (Bob Marley, AC/DC) and if you like folk, melodic rock, country with a tiny twist of jazz this album could be for you. It is sink or swim time for me, I wrote songs for 18 years to get to this stage and I would love the opportunity to tour, play live in good venues and make a second album - that all depends on who and how many enjoy this album. Help an aspiring artist and get in touch via http://www.danielwm.com or http://www.sellaband.com/danielwm

Thank you
Daniel

@ Steve It will probably take some time before the cash starts coming in. Cash has to come from sales of regular CD’s and
downloads and advertisement, shared between sie, recorded artists and their believers. Also from sale of surplus limited edition CD’s for believers who have bought more than 1 $10 part.

The SellaBand community actively supports its artists (forum.sellaband.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=10287) To name a few.

One initiative is tThe Artist Support Shopping Mall (ASSM) (www.merchanteyes.biz) supports unrecorded SAB artists by investing 100% of income from affiliate marketing in SellaBand. (80% through a Gift Part lottery among believers of SAB top 100 artists, 20% through direct investment in top 10 artists, 2% each)

Another one is TalentCast (www.talentcast.nl) is a SellaBand only internet radiostation with weekly airtime for SAB artists.

A third one can be found at

This sounds like a good idea but it sounds like you’re trying to cover something up. I’m still wondering if you make a profit off every part you buy.

Frankly, If you think about it, there are a few problems with this kind of market or whatever they call it. Say you DO make a profit off of each “part” that you buy. Then why doesn’t some really rich person, or risky investor, come in and buy all the parts off one really good artist and make all the profits from the sales? I mean, you could monopolize the freaking thing.

Also, say that you don’t make a profit from each part, because I, right now, am not sure that you do. That’s why I think you were adding all that “good feeling” junk into the video. I’m not going to take my chances with it till i learn more about it >.>

All you’re other videos are pretty nice though. Nice job.

My wife (Mandyleigh Storm) is one of the artists that reached the target and recorded an album with producer Mick Glossop (Van Morrison, Frank Zappa etc), and great musicians from Van Morrison, Frank Zappa and Steeleye Span.

When artists upload songs onto Sellaband, they are demo’s. What the listener needs to do is hear the potential in that artist, and then invest in them to send them to a studio to record a pro album.

One thing to note is that until the artist you have invested in actually reached the $50k target, then that $10 you invested is still yours. You can get it refunded or move it to another artist, whatever you want. It’s only locked in when the artist hits the target.

There are plenty of free mp3’s to download from the recorded artists, so grab them all while you can, or download whole albums for just a few dollars (or tracks at 50c each).

It really is a fantastic concept, and the only place SAB needs to improve on is in their sales/marketing.

Oh, also, when the artist records their album, you get a limited edition copy (of 5000) of that album, for every $10 you invested.

So, if you invested $100, you will own 10 limited edition cd’s of that artist. You can choose to have them all posted to you, or leave all or some with SAB to sell on their site etc for you.

Plus, you still get a share of the ad revenue and anything else the artist makes via that album (imagine if one song got picked up by a film, tv series, or commercial).

SellaBand.com is just over 2 years old and needs further growth to reach critical mass and a sustainable steam of money and recording artists. The more CD’s are released, the more publicity gained, the easier this growth will be. For those who are only interested in the “make money” aspect, they’d better look elsewhere. For those who love music and the community aspects of working together to get your favourite artists to make their next CD and having fun, SellaBand.com is a great place.

One very nice spinoff is the Cooperation Project http://www.sellaband.com/collaborations-cd/ and another one The Dream Team http://www.sellaband.com/believer/the-dream-team/

A nice community thing is the globe-spanning poem by 4 different SAB believers (Alex - France-, Fabian, -Germany-, Willow, -USA-, and Douwe -Netehrlands) read by Lori Greco and with music from Dave Allen, both from Australia
http://www.sellaband.com/burning-mountain-studio/
You can see the poem develop (and the fun we were having with it on the Forum http://forum.sellaband.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=8257&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&start=390

money is that what everyone thinks about? Yes if some rich guy thought a band was good enough to buy as many parts as possible (5000) then they would own all those limited cds. Hope that rich person can get them sold.

Just as Pieps (who was booted from Sellaband) says the income is very little. For your $10 you get a Limited Edition cd any revenue share you earn should be looked at as gravy.

However the community is active in so many ways Walter M one of the believers runs sellaband island on second life. The community manager does a great job keeping half a dozen social groups alive. There are at least couple dozen blogs globally that talk about Sellaband news from time to time. And less we forget Merchant eyes above already mentioned ASSM to which Netvalar.com pays 25% commisions of every sale into. And those are just the tip of the iceberg.

So not only is it a great concept but the community has expanded it far beyond just the sellaband site itself.

Hey Chris,

Thanks for featuring SellaBand on your site! We’re aiming to level the playing field of the global music industry. It sure looks like we’re a record label, which we’re actually not. We’re a platform that empowers independent artist/band to record a professional album with the help of their fans. So unlike record label we don’t choose which one will make it, we let the fans do that! To date 27 Artists from 12 different countries have raised the full $50,000. The next album is from Daniel-Ward Murphy’s! don’t miss it.

SellaBand

Sellaband is a fantastic concept, we are over 30.000$ now and have more than 440 so called “believers”.
Just check out the site and maybe there is a artist you want to be in business with. Or you think that deserves to make that 50K album….or just to find some undiscovered kick *** music ;-)

You’re welcome

I thought this site was a good idea, and I like that you are interested in this concept. I happen to be not only an artist on the site, but also a believer, as artists definitely support other artists.

Now we are working on doing more shows together under the name of SAB to spread the word. But what you are doing really is helping. I hope to see you on there sometime! :)

M. Harris

We are actually one of the 50k artists who hit on SAB. Currently we are recording the album and to say the least, its a great feeling to not have to worry about funding this album. Our past professionally produced album was done all out of pocket and cost a pretty penny. Fortunately this time we had some investors, and to say the least, 5,000 presold albums dont look half bad. Now for a terrible plug, but if you wish to pre order one of these albums but missed the SAB rush, go to http://www.myspace.com/bulletproofmessenger to pick one up. Thanks to all our investors and check out sab baby!
