My son and daughter in law are currently in Jamaica with the Peace Corps. Before they left, they ordered a Mac laptop this past June. Do you know of any possibilities for wireless internet for a mac laptop in Jamaica?
They’ve looked into Digicel internet cards here (Digicel is the largest telecom company), and apparently they only work with PCs. We’ve also heard that it’s possible to use an unlocked SIM card for internet, through a compatible cell phone. However, we don’t have the ability to find one online, have the company unlock it, and buy whatever phone would work for it. We figure that Mac has some perfectly brilliant answer for this problem, but we haven’t the cell phone minutes or internet time to research it.

Any help would be appreciated!!

That’s what I believe too, that someday there will be free wireless internet by satelites availible to anyone around the world.

For some countries, I remember when I went on some business trips that I discovered their are people who can receive Wireless Internet illegally through a variety of efforts to connect to the internet; countries such as Jamaica, my homeland Dominican Rep., Mexico, Puerto Rico, Trinidad & Tobago, & even few in Guam!

dude u can already get free internet. all u have to do is live in an apartment. say u turn on yr laptop and BOOM! a bubble says wireless connection 3 is now connected. Using a persons wireless network is completely legal as long as the owner of the network know u r using it. Meanwhile everybody could do that and there would b no more internet bills. It would only b illegal if the owner doesn’t know that you’re using they’re wireless.

I live in Cincinnati, Ohio and there are a few options for wireless. The free service is called LilyPad. It is completely volunteer run and has over 150 hot spots, including 15 city busses. If you are willing to pay the largest wireless service is AT&T. Rates from daily to yearly allow you to use their 300 hot spots. There are some smaller volume services but they are similar to the AT&T service. From an end user experience all of the services that I have used seem very robust. As I sit in my apartment I can occasionally pick up the LilyPad hotspot that is nearly a mile away.
