Wireless Internet is Everywhere

During a discussion about Broadband and people near Seattle having trouble with Comcast, Rikai from our chat room brought up an interesting question. “What are your thoughts on the rumors of the 700Mhz spectrum potentially being used for Hi-Speed Wireless connections?”
I’m sure you’ve all heard the news lately about how Starbucks is now offering free WiFi to their customers. I’m not going to comment on their coffee… but who would turn down some free Internet service? Make sure you use https:// when doing things from open Wi-Fi like checking your email. This makes you much more secure.
Wireless Internet is just everywhere. You can’t walk more than 20 feet in an urban area without finding an open connection. The problem with a lot of Tel-Co’s is that they want you to experience their version of a wireless Internet. That’s crazy. It’s the Internet, right? For now… we don’t have much choice other than to stick with just one provider. Some people don’t have access to faster Broadband… yet. Internet is essential these days. One of these days… mark my words… the world of the Internet is going to be blown wide open, as far as choices.
Just imagine if Wireless Internet truly was available everywhere, much like Television. Throw up a TV antenna… you have tv. Throw up an Internet antenna… you get the picture. Someday, it will happen.

I have a wireless broadband system at home. We dont have wireless spots anywhere else in our small town. I am constantly on our network 24/7 and i am addicted. When we ever had service or technical problems or …I shudder to say this..power outage.. I go crazy and nearly gnaw my foot off in a panic waiting for it to return. Makes a geek appreciate what hes got when something like that goes down.

i’ve been in his chatroom about 4 months now and never ever faced a problem like that.If you pick as username “Lickmyb@ll$” that’s your problem and ofcourse you’ll get kicked.Using caps when chatting can be really annoying for others. Some people are sitting in front of their screen, working for like 12-14 hours per day and the last thing they want to see is caps. Finally, spamming the chat is really unnecessary.Saying something twice won’t get you kicked, but spamming will [to be continued]

I think it’s a great idea, and I actually thought about this idea a few years ago. My idea was to set up transmitters and receivers at the same intervals as street lights, so that everyone can get high quality (meaning high bandwidth and reliable) internet.

I have to say that there is always a catch with every service out there. City Wide Wireless will take off but it will have it’s issues. For example the catch is the free part may be slow and flooded with ADs. Now i would imagine to get faster services and free of ADs that a monthly fee will be required just like paying for Cable TV so as long as there is a profit to be made anyone will find a way because nothing is ever without it’s catch.

Free Wireless Internet would be amazing. It’ll be hard in places that are away from major cities like where I live though.

Yes, Wireless would be very cool. But only for certain things. It’s very insecure. I mean, from the moment you connect to internet, you are no longer secure, but wireless is lowing security power more.

You made a comment on video about TV antenna and a HDTV antenna. They are the same thing! HDTV broadcasts over the same channels as regular TV. Now some of the channels may have moved to another band (VHF or UHF) but if you have a VHF/UHF antenna you have a HDTV antenna.

If there was one wireless provider and they made it atleast semi secure, then yea, I’m game, but other than that I’m sticking with my landline/fiber optics/cable/..pick one broadband, besides, I only got to Starbucks to draw..

TV is free, Radio is free, they’re regulated by the FCC..
Internet, free to all.. wow, there would be some hardcore regulations. I think the only reason the internet is such a free and mobile domain is because the majority of us pay for it, it’s like the more services we pay for when it comes to cable/satalite tv, the more we’re able to see without being restricted. You can’t watch Playboy unless you pay for it..

I live in Cincinnati, Ohio and there are a few options for wireless. The free service is called LilyPad. It is completely volunteer run and has over 150 hot spots, including 15 city busses. If you are willing to pay the largest wireless service is AT&T. Rates from daily to yearly allow you to use their 300 hot spots. There are some smaller volume services but they are similar to the AT&T service. From an end user experience all of the services that I have used seem very robust. As I sit in my apartment I can occasionally pick up the LilyPad hotspot that is nearly a mile away.

dude u can already get free internet. all u have to do is live in an apartment. say u turn on yr laptop and BOOM! a bubble says wireless connection 3 is now connected. Using a persons wireless network is completely legal as long as the owner of the network know u r using it. Meanwhile everybody could do that and there would b no more internet bills. It would only b illegal if the owner doesn’t know that you’re using they’re wireless.

For some countries, I remember when I went on some business trips that I discovered their are people who can receive Wireless Internet illegally through a variety of efforts to connect to the internet; countries such as Jamaica, my homeland Dominican Rep., Mexico, Puerto Rico, Trinidad & Tobago, & even few in Guam!

My son and daughter in law are currently in Jamaica with the Peace Corps. Before they left, they ordered a Mac laptop this past June. Do you know of any possibilities for wireless internet for a mac laptop in Jamaica?
They’ve looked into Digicel internet cards here (Digicel is the largest telecom company), and apparently they only work with PCs. We’ve also heard that it’s possible to use an unlocked SIM card for internet, through a compatible cell phone. However, we don’t have the ability to find one online, have the company unlock it, and buy whatever phone would work for it. We figure that Mac has some perfectly brilliant answer for this problem, but we haven’t the cell phone minutes or internet time to research it.
Any help would be appreciated!!
