Windows XP SP3 vs Windows Vista SP1

fishfishstinks wrote in to ask me with the release of XP SP3… will Microsoft soon stop supporting and updating XP altogether?
The answer is… yes. Eventually, it will happen, as it does with all old operating systems. When will that happen? I have no idea. I am fairly sure that this will be the last actual Service Pack for Windows XP. But, they’ll still issue critical updates and things of that nature. The next Microsoft Operating System is due somewhere in 2009. Will we see it then? Eh… I’m not sure we’ll get it quite that soon.
Apple doesn’t issue service packs for their operating system. Rather, they issue point updates. Their new version of OS X is due out shortly… Leopard.
Ubuntu just released GutsyGibbon, which is Ubuntu version 7.10.
What operating system are you using? Do you plan to switch in the near future? Do you think each of these companies handle their updates and new versions well, or is there a better way they could do things?

I have also went back and fourth between Windows XP SP2 and Windows Vista… its a mess. I am going to wait until Sp1 for Vista is released and I will be integrating the sp into my install dvd and giving Vista another shot. I really like how it looks :P and the ‘User Name’ folder is IMO a better layout then the My Documents folder alone. Yes I know the ‘User Name’ folder exists in Windows XP but it is more nicely laid out in Vista. In face Vista handles a lot of stuff like that much better then Windows XP… Now if they could just iron out those bugs and maybe get it moving a little bit faster.

For me Windows Vista with 1GB RAM = Windows XP with 256 RAM. I stand with Windows XP with 2GB.

the whole apple point release thing is interesting, because apple have actually found a way for you to pay for minor feature releases that many software firms just bundle into a free service pack for their software.
now, if it introduces something quite big (I think bootcamp would come under that category) I could imagine charging a small fee as a way to pay for the development (since it’s not an improvement on software already bundled in the OS) of that, but having to pay for changes to software that was already released with the OS when you purchased it is very cheeky indeed.
Yes, I’m aware that apple have their patches/system updates seperate to their feature packs (which is how I would describe their point releases) and don’t charge for those (my gf’s emac still gets security updates even though it’s still on osx 10.2 or 10.3, I can’t remember which), but could you imagine the uproar if M$ were to charge for the OS redevelopment that they tend to just bundle into their service packs?

Well, willaspire, your part of the minority then. Since you asked-
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200, 2GB RAM, nVidia GeForce 7300 (driver issues), Sigmatel sound card (major driver issues), Samsung Lightscribe drive (major driver issues), HP Photosmart 3310 (Driver Issues), MX Revolution Mouse (Doesn’t play nice with Vista) And then the software incompatibility is a whole nother story…

Check if your processor is 64bit, try searching your processor model on google and see what comes back :)
I wouldn’t recommend 64bit windows because drivers and applications don;t work that great :) 32bit windows ftw, 64bit mac osx leopard ftw!

Since Vista was released there has almost been bi daily updates on my xp machine at work.
The mac’s work… not so often there might be one every month, and isn’t the ..x packs basicaly the same as service packs for windows only they are 3 times as frequent and 1/3 the size?

Running Vista, and I’m not going to change back to XP :P
But SP are good to, if you reinstall your system it’s nice to have something to boot on and then some small updates only.
I’ll change to Linux if it is going to run all the apps that WIndows can now. If not.. Well, we’ll see..
Tried the newest Mac, didn’t like it. Not my sort of system… And Linux still isn’t ready for me.

Hi guys,
I know this reply is late, but I was surprised how many are running Vista. I was searching for comparisons btw Vista and XP and I ame here. I am actually still using WinXPSP2 at home, and Win 2K SP4 on another older machine (where I do most of my productive work).
I tried Vista Business (got a license through my university)on the high-end machine (P4 3 GHz HT, 2 GB RAM) and it was barely. I don’t think I’ll be upgrading to Vista ever. From now until 2014 (when MS’s support for XP ends), I am pretty sure that I will move to either Mac or Linux (if I managed to learn it well).

people,
I overclock, its a no-brainer. Vista is a step back, microsoft seems to forget problems they fixed previously with other operating systems. Easily overclocked my amd 5600+ to 3.0, my memory to 430mhz, my video card to 650mhz 8800 gt. Installed vista, said overclock failed. No microsoft, Vista failed.
Use Windows XP Professional SP3, play with Ubuntu, nice easy open source learner linux for newbies. Easy install through wibi, through windows XP
In closing, 64 bit versions went to route of two processors on one board, and Windows ME. What a fairy tale waste for consumers. Seems not one company ever really decided to go along with 64 bit.

I cant decide between xp and vista since they bothe have advantages eg XP uses less power so is suitable for gaming whilst vista has a shiny new interface that is easier to use. In my view, i would stick with xp until mr gates decides to iron out all the problems in vista.

xp is still the best..
I used ubuntu 7.10 cause i was sick of vista, find it great, but with the new 8.04 update got a driver problem, so now im back with xp!!
Ubuntu is great but it doesn’t run games likes xp and also adobe software dont works… (yes wine is doing a good job running them but it still have problems, and new games takes time to get on wine)
Enjoy xp, sure try out mac osx or linux, they sure gives you programming and OS skills, but in the end…

actually 4 gigs of ram might be a bit much, you dont need that much, vista only utilizes about 400 megs of the ram you have for normal activity, so you can have 16 gigs of ram and still it wont make a difference. the speed of the ram is what matters. and also you cant just get a quad core, you have to make sure the motherboard supports it. so first get a nice motherboard, then go from there.
dibden99
April 29th, 2008

lol very true, i should have said about the ram speed, and i only said 4 gb becasues i found 2 gb was to small, and most new motherboards have support quad cores, but i should have said about it so people got my point

I do not neccessarily like visita and made a very swift transition to ubuntu and loving every minute of it. I do of course still use XP and I might still survive for at least another few more years. I did with windows 98 until last year (2007). Wow we are talking about 10 years. I am willing to take a chance with XP. Hopefully after it I will forget completely about Windows, once XP dies out.

I will be using XP in 2009 as a backup alternative. The games I like work better on XP. I’ll prpbably switch and run XP in a virtual pc. I had no issue with Vista before the SP. the ppl who had trouble with vista is teh sme as will xp. just use a system with the proper specs it runs almost perfect.I have quadcore with 4gb of ram on Vista x64 and I have no problems.

One reason M$ gets away with releasing crappy Os’s (Vista) is people continue to support them anyways!?? Say “NO” to Vista and maybe they’ll feel obligated to come up with something better.

Sales until 2009, but support extended to 2014! That means that even MS knows that XP is the best thing they’ve ever came up with :)

stick with XP everybody, iv got Vista installed twice and it has issues. Its just unstable and freezes on alot of applications. The ctrl-alt-del does not bring up task manager but another screen first.
The Task Manager is unreliable to close non responding programs i find also

I am still wondering if it is really a good solution to deploy Windows vista in a large organization of about 1000 users?

Im running Vista x64 Ultimate with 8gb of ram and to be honest im glad i made the change: running games in 64-bit improves fps in games by up to 20fps, vista also has better memory management than xp and directx10 graphics are amazing compared to dx9. conclusion dnt complain bout vista unless uve got a gaming rig tht can handle dx10 and u atleast hav 4gb of ram for gaming

Udate on last comment: memory management; Vista says its using all of my ram in other words it says i hav bout 64mb free 1gb used and 7gb cached this is the supior memory management of vista all my most commonly used programs etc.. are pre-loaded into the ram meaning tasks load straight away no waiting like wen i was using xp mainly because ram runs faster than ur hard drive does at loading apps

I recently reinstalled Vista from XP and SP1 seems to be more stable for me. Though I did have problems with the Task Scheduler Engine consantly closing, I found the problem was the “superfetch” service. I turned it off and it runs great.

Vista suffered from what XP had suffered.
When XP came out, people stated saying O, Who needs Windows XP, when we have WINDOWS 2000/ME.
At the moment I’m using my dad’s vista, my own xp sp3 laptop is defragmenting.
At the moment, I prefer XP.
When Windows Se7en comes out in the 2010 timefrme, people will start liking Vista and saying oh look its Windows Se7en the disgrace of microsoft.
Then so on and so on..
At the moment PC has 90% of the market under capture.
And yes, this is ravi chowdhury from beal high school..

Vista and xp . new or old . All about marketing
nothing that is new works perfect . it took xp until sp2 to be stable enough .
vista sp1 is a real update , while sp3 is a coverup ….
i think microsoft itself gave a statement by releaseing xp sp3 that is ” hang on there windows users we are working our all to perfect vista , here is a so called upgrade for xp please stay with windows dont change to apple or linux …..”
a very desperate marketing stunt for microsoft . shame on them . sp3 is an update like all updates for xp since sp2 , cant believe people actually thinks it makes xp faster …. all it does is updates your windows xp like any windows update you have done before since sp2 . ( security updates sugar coated to sound like they are doing something special for the end user hence sp3 ) ,
nothing new with xp , and new technology offered by vista ( dx10 , faster memory swap , readyBoost etc…).. you do the math . vista is not perfect . but its good … again it’s new vs. old … you do the math ….
vista for me ,,,
