Windows Vista – Promises Delivered?

Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed

Several of us got together on Ventrilo just to chit chat. We ended up talking about Vista and XP, the differences, the expectations… and the opinions on the reality that is Vista.

A community member who goes by the name of SWAT started this off by making a comment that he feels as though he was ‘ripped off’ with Vista. I asked him how? I mean, didn’t Microsoft promise more “wow”? Didn’t they guarantee more eye candy? They delivered on that, right? They gave us AERO, Flip3D… so many little things like that. So how does he feel ripped off?

SWAT’s answer is simple. He says that while all of those things may be considered to be great new features in the eyes of Microsoft… but they are not in his. He doesn’t feel that Vista has lived up to the hype, and that it’s a “$500 copy of Poker”. He doesn’t necessarily want all those bells and whistles. He just wants a stable Operating System that will work. Unfortunately, at the time he had to buy a new laptop, he could ONLY get Vista on it, so he feels stuck with it.

Datalore, on the other hand, truly like Vista. He’s having no issues with it, and simply turns off the features he doesn’t want. But isn’t the point that you shouldn’t have to turn things off? Isn’t the point to make an Operating System that does what it needs to do… without so much getting in the way? Why the need to keep trying to outdo each other with gadgets, bells, whistles, and hoopla? Why can’t we get back to focusing on making a product that will run well, and do the things we need it to DO?

Datalore said he turns off the features he doesn’t want. Unless I read something wrong he did not need to turn these off. What would an operating system be if people didn’t tweak it to how they like it? Vista works out of the box.. but some people don’t like Aero and use classic, others don’t like the sidebar or gadgets in general so they turn them off. Some don’t like Internet Explorer and use Firefox or Maxthon instead… what would an operating system be if we couldn’t tweak it to exactly how they like it?

I second TheDub’s opinion

I Just bought a new Toshiba Qosmio and I HATE Vista.
Who cares about eye candy when you are constantly getting bit by the bugs in the software? This OS is not ready for prime time. Lockups, sudden reboots. I’ve already had to roll back twice just to keep running. No way I’m putting this junk on my existing desktop. I ALMOST wish I had spent twice the money for a Mac.

I’ve been using Vista for at least six months. It came on the laptop I purchased last fall. I had been using XP Professional and have a Mac Mini that I use occasionally. Primarily for web verification.
Vista has been trouble free and performed well staright out of the box. What I hear from you all is a biunch of Mac addicts who just want to run down Microsoft products, because they aren’t Mac products. I’ use OS-X on the Mini and don;t use 90% of the stuff built in? Why? Because I don’t NEED them to do my job and as far as I am concerned they are just toys.

Hum,
seems like there is a double standard here, like folks are willing to glance over the defects in Leopard, but not not with Vista. What’s with that anyway?

Let’s get real here. Operating systems are complicated, be it Linux, Leopard, Vista or XP. They are always going to be works in progress.

As for me, I’m sticking with XP for the time being because it has had the time to have a lot of the bugs worked out. Not that it doesn’t still have issues. But so does any distro of Linux, and so does Leopard, as does Vista.

I just got a new computer with Vista Home Premium installed and would not have if I had known more about it.
FAX – I used it with XP Home infrequently, but it was still there when I needed it. Now Microsoft only includes it in ultimate. More money.

Microsoft XP Office 2002 worked great and I use Outlook daily for email. With Vista I have to insert the passwords every time I start the sucker since Vista doesn’t keep them.

Another gripe is it continually asks me if I am sure I want to run a program. If I didn’t want to run it, I wouldn’t have clicked on it.

I maybe a senior, but I am not that dumb.

Vista is there not for the benefit of the consumer but for the benefit of Microsoft. Unfortunately people don’t understand this.

I hope a sony notebook w/ vista. contacted sony for xp drivers for the vista laptop and they said there’s no driver. Fuck them. search the internet and successfully installed xp on the notebook and works great.

You still can’t scan with Vista!!!(especially if have an HP computer)!!!

chris i want to talk online with you id like to talk about vista and xp and the new technology that would be great id so do that.

the heck? I can scan with my Vista notebook. Toshiba laptop, all-in-one HP Scanner/Copier/Printer.

As far as I know, Dell no longer sells XP… My new computer came with Home Premium, and my old installation CD of XP from back in 2001 wasn’t exactly the best choice with all it’s outdated software, so I’m sticking with Vista…

I do not like Vista, but I still use it. I turned off all of the “fancy” features and made it as basic as possible. To me, Vista feels like a cheap piece of plastic compared to the solid steel that was XP. I have SO many bugs with Vista that I dont even know where to begin when telling them to people, most of which I get the response “Oh, that happens to me too and thought it was just me” after I share them.

If it was up to me, i would switch to a Mac, especially after the release of Leopard. But I am poor :( and I just purchased this new HP…

I often get the argument that “Vista is new, of course it has bugs, so did XP when it came out”…this just irritates me. Sure, XP had bugs, but no where near as many or as noticeable as Vista has. I dont think Vista was ready to be released…anywhere near ready…

The fact is, Microsoft has to deal with the numerous hardware configurations that are possible to have with Vista, and bugs are to be expected. But this to me jsut seems like a bad excuse. Even if this is the main factor for Vista not being as good as it could be (not quite sure myself), it just seems like a bad excuse…

Think about this, Mac doesn’t have to deal with the many different hardware configurations, so it doesn’t have that problem. Now its all fine and dandy to say that windows needs to be given a break because they have to deal with it, but that to me is just like saying they are broken…

So, Vista = broken, Mac = not broken…I don’t care what the reason for this is…but the fact is that Mac works and, right now (for a lot of people), Vista doesn’t…

Basically, Vista was a major disappointment for me as well…and I would encourage anyone looking for a new computer to visit an Apple Store…get out before you get in…

How in the world is it that your computer will let you scan but mines won’t!!!??? Not FAIR!!! Need help here!

I agree with F10 I am seeing more and more of a double standard on the internet when it comes to operating systems. My first example will be what power users hate probably the most in Windows Vista, UAC. UAC pops up everytime a unrecognized program is going to run or you are going to do something that will alter your system, example control panel applets. Wait… what were people complaining about a few years ago with the viruses that existed in Windows xp… wait for it.. yes! thats it! people complained that programs are running without them telling the program to run! Complain complain complain how did I get this virus? I didn’t open the file, etc. SO Microsofts response was UAC… UAC is good… the idea is good… I hate it as do most power users… I’ve never had a problem with all the viruses and malware the windows world is supposedly drenched in.

Gadgets and Widgets… Ok.. how come people are amazed by apples widget system and just freaking shocked they can make there own but in the Windows Vista world the sidebar is a joke… I’ve seen this one a lot… people love widgets… hate gadgets.. ok as I understand there are two main differences I have seen… One Leopard allows you to make your own in a easier fashion.. thats a point for Apple… but then again if you hate gadgets in windows what makes making Widgets in OS X so amazing. Two is a matter of preference… OS X’s widgets are only visible when you hit a hotkey while Vista’s are on the side of the screen in the “sidebar”. I prefer the latter of the two… what good are gadgets such as Weather if I only see them when I press a hotkey… I’d likely forget about them myself… Vista’s on the side keep them visible when I am reading emails or typing up homework… I very much like where Vista’s are compared to OS X’s. So a point for Microsoft.

OS X is more feature rich and complete then Windows Vista. There I said it! I’m not a Windows Fanboy or anything like that myself. I use Windows because currently its right for me. The double standard thing though is very much present. If you don’t like widgets don’t love microsofts gadgets and if you don’t like gadgets how can you like apple’s widgets much more… Seriously they are NOT different enough to hate one and love the other.

Something I forgot to add is that I do believe that Windows Vista or Windows 7 with time will mature and become what Longhorn was originally going to be.

Also… anyone who says Mac’s and Pc’s are the same price for what you get are wrong.. at least in the notebook department. My 600 dollar PC is a lot more powerful in the storage, memory and graphics department then the 1099 dollar MacBook. The exception is the processor speed… the MacBook is 400mhz faster then my pc…

I agree that every operating system has some sort of flaw and hopefully Vistas will be ironed out as best as they can as it develops. Ive tried Vista multiple times and have been for the most part, impressed with it. There are some features I love in Vista but quite a few are in need of development before I really start to appreciate them and alot of features need to be turned off or tweaked which is annoying considering that features like UAC (User Account Control) are supposed to “help” you and your PC. For the moment I’m sticking with good old reliable XP Professional which I will be installing on my new computer which is arriving soon. Even though Vista isnt bad I like XP a whole lot more, maybe cause I’m more used to it, who knows.

xps comes standerd with xp, for the games.you can get vista for the same price though.

he said hp computer not printer.

I bought a Fujitsu Lifebook that came with Vista Home Premium installed only choice I had. So far it is behaving itself & doing everything I need, I’m running office 2003 including Outlook & Visio with no issues. I have to admit I like some of thr ‘eye candy.’ I run XP on my home desktop 7 have no intention of upgrading as I know there will be compatibility issues.

I have the same niggles about it asking me if its OK to run programs etc, but if it ask me if its OK to go to the loo (bathroom) then I will really worry!!

Bottom line is Vista seems to run fine on PC/Laptops that were made for it…

VISTA SUCKS WITH A CAPITOL S

the new C2D at 1.8ghz is faster than a p4 at 3.0ghz. its proven.

I have been putting off a purchase of a laptop as long as possible, since most new laptops now come with Vista. I purchased a HP dv9420, and fired it up to connect to my home network. I have spent nearly 10 hours researching what I have found to be a very wide spread problem with getting the Vista machine to stay connected to a network. Problem is – no fixes. I am running three other XP machines (they’ve run flawlessly together for years now). When the Vista machine is turned on, all machines lose their network connection. Have to reboot the router. So, the bottom line is – Vista causes headaches for ALL users on the network. Do I return the HP? Do I downgrade it to Vista? The mini PCI Broadcom wireless card doesn’t seem compatible with Vista, despite latest drivers. And there is an issue with switching over to battery only power. That ALWAYS causes loss of network connectivity. Sadly, the problems appear to be related to components and OS. No one has found a fix to date. HP has replaced motherboards, wireless cards, etc. But users say the problems persist… so, I have to believe no one knows what to do. So, my experience …. for multiple reasons…. thumbs down to Vista on a HP laptop anyway. Oh – and forget about online gaming… phone jacks every 15 seconds, until you lose the connection completely. I’d gladly trade Aero and 3D flip for a stable connection!!!! (If any poster knows a fix for these problems…???)

Vista has two big problems, both of which are probably fixable. Since vista is such a huge rewrite, a new OS really, it can’t help but be full of glitches that weren’t supposed to happen. I remember how buggy Windows 95 was when it first came out, and how, one by one, the problems went away. It’s probably inevitable that Vista will take the same course, maybe just considerably slower. The other issue is drivers and software updates. Most of the applications programmers don’t seem to have done their homework, and to put it bluntly they don’t seem to know how Vista works. They turn out drivers and program updates which appear to be nothing more than best-guesses, and then they just sit back and wait for the fireworks to begin, whereupon they do their best to deflect the blame back on to Vista. Microsoft is probably the cause of this game of dodgeball, because their published documentation on Vista is incomprehensible, and that’s the only word for it. Trying to decipher such hieroglyphics is impossible, simply because the text very frequently sets out to define a particular term, and does so by employing a dozen even more unfamiliar terms in rapid-fire fashion, until the reader finds that knowledge has been subtracted from his head rather than added. There is nothing to do but close the book and play Minesweeper (which does work).

Okay, why are you still fanning the flames.

Apple makes great products. I love Macs, but I won’t buy.

Why should I? Windows works just fine. Everytime some says Vista Sucks and us XP, I smile. XP is great it is Windows and everyone appears to love it despite numerous problems like virus and spyware (overstated).

I’m not using Vista. I own a 2 year old laptop and a 3 year old desktop. Both work fine. I have no reason to upgrade to Vista.

Yet, if I do in 2 to 3 more years, I will most likely buy a PC. PCs offer more bang for the buck and this IS important. Apple looks nice, but I have no need for paying too much and getting too little. This usually happens when you buy the lower end of Macs like the Mini and the iMacs. They are just ridiculous in how Apple skimps on the hardware.

If I’m going to pay $600 for a Mini or $1200 for a iMac, I expect performance comparable to a PC. Only the mid-range Macs are comparable to the features of a PC.

Keep the Vista criticism. It won’t sell the Mac. Mac has to sell itself.

@ F10

Interesting, Leopard was released last Friday 26 and you already know it all to talk about defects..? First hand experiences? Granted, no OS is perfect and Leopard isn’t as well, but the issue here is Vista and we’re definetly not installing it on any machine in our business and sticking to XP. We’re upgrading to Leopard, though.

fuck you i dont know what country your from but where ever your at, find a cliff and jump off it or stop bitching. besides whos country here has a better army dont fuck with us or weel fuck with you

lol its a rip of anyway but im not gonna get into that right now.

It is NOW. When it launched it was $499 for Vista Ultimate.

Dang, I think $499 is a little much for an oprerating system.

I bet that Windows 7 will be a hell of a lot better than vista because of all of the complaints with Vista. Microsoft will realize that if they don’t turn this around that they will be killed by Apple and just crash. I’m still an Xp/Linux user and I will wait for either a miracle service pack for vista or the next operating system release from Microsoft.

Dell still offers XP or Vista. I always go XP.

Not a Windows user and the only Mac user in the house is my wife. I own Vista Ultimate and have to say I have found the following the following to be generally true.

1) Install Vista on your existing XP box, you will likely have at least one issue of some sort.

2) Buy a made for Vista box, you will have less issues, be it not problem free however.

What both sides continue to fail to realize is that Windows is not a blanket experience. One guy can install it and have zero issues whatsoever. While the very next person does the exact same thing with a different hardware setup and it is problems from day one.

On both sides, even Microsoft has admitted that Vista has bugs. It’s immaterial to me as I could care less, but I think the “Vista is wonderful” talk needs a * next to it for a disclaimer. Usable for some, sure. Bug free, time to take a look around the rest of the world. XP was ok, Windows 7 may be fine, but Vista had trouble from the beginning and believe me, I know this from experience, be it not for me to pass any blanket judgments entirely. There are things about OS X and Ubuntu that bug me as well, so I tend to balance things out as much as possible.

Remember, with any OS, one man’s treasure is another man’s trash.

^^^ Meant my wife’s mac, not that my wife was a mac – as that would be sort of weird… lol

Got vista, to do development work on.
It sits in the corner mostly unused.
I don’t like it

ive had 2 bluescreens on my laptop with vista and i havent used it alot sens i got it. stick to your old XP and live free and onward.

All the ultimate extras are.. lost. But trust me, they will come soon when they have more time!

Windows Vista limits what you can do with your own machine, they pretty much tell you what software you can and cannot run. It’s too controlling and they spy on you with it. I will never use Windows Vista. It was also sold “half assed” Stick with XP, mac or Linux

Hello all!!!

Well, if you’ve been in the chat room with Chris Pirillo, or even one of the other ops during Live Streaming (24 hours a day) you will have seen me in chat, and you’ll know that I’m one of the few weirdos who seem to worship Vista. While it is true that I have had good experiences with the new operating system, it is also true that I think Windows Vista is a complete con. Well, at least for now.

Some of the good points I’ve noted about Vista are:

1. I got it for free! (This is because I was a Beta Tester – this may make it difficult for me to be critical of the operating system as I’m not spending hundreds of pounds or dollars to buy it)

2. At least in my experiences, Vista seems to be more stable than XP ever was. In fact, XP was a pain in the backside. Even some of my mates told me that my machine seemed to hate XP.

3. It works (well, for me that is). It seems faster (but I have upgraded graphics card, memory and hard-drive) so in theory XP would be faster also.

4. I haven’t seen any signs of Spyware of Viruses on my machine. So Vista, to me, is more secure than XP. Perhaps I’m wrong on this, but XP seemed to get infected with crapware all the time! So this is a very agreeable part of Vista, but perhaps the reason it gets less infections is because most PC users are running XP on their machines. Therefore, those with evil intentions are not concentrating on Vista for the time being. The future will show, I’m sure, that Vista is not as secure as it is making itself out to be. I also remember Master Pirillo saying that what will run on a Windows platform will probably run on all Windows platforms, or something similar to that. Meaning, if it runs on XP, it’ll run on Vista too.

5. The Aero theme is lovely. I mean: it is very nice to have. And Dreamscene is a pleasant feature too, it is about time that the background could be a video! In fact, Vista has a number of pleasant features and some of the annoying ones are easily turned off.

Some of the things about Vista that make me cringe:

1. The pricing in the UK started off, at least for the Ultimate version, £350…that is $700 in American money. Would any of you pay that for a Beta version of an operating system? This is why Vista, and Microsoft are in deep trouble in Britain, and the world. Most PC users who have Vista are more likely to have got the operating system from two means: it came with the computer or, they illegally downloaded it from a torrent. And if Windows is charging those prices, who can be surprise at that? Who can blame the user?

2. It doesn’t live up to the expectations. Sure it is a better operating system, but for the price it is a con. What would you Americans expect to get by paying $700 for Vista? Me, I expect all my life problems to go away! Vista doesn’t do any of this, and they really should not be releasing a Beta version at those prices! They really should be getting a hammering for this, not a smack hand, and then someone saying, ‘don’t do it again.’

3. Lots of Vista users are having problems (I’ve been lucky, in that I’ve had no problems at all, and I’ve been using Vista for 6 months), but not everyone is so pleased. This may not be all Windows fault, but it is their responsibility to make better for their customers.

4. I hate phoning Microsoft for help (I don’t do this anymore as I am a black belt in googling). There is always some Indian on the other side who can’t speak a word of English, it is Windows’ and Microsoft’s (I know they are part of the same company) responsibility to provide good customer service, at the moment…they don’t! Just because every other pain in the ass company can’t be bothered in providing good customer service doesn’t mean that they should be likewise.

Final thought:

We can’t let big companies like Microsoft getaway with releasing garbage onto the public. The whole point about complaining is to make things better. If we let them getaway with this, they’ll think they will be able to get away with anything and the quality of future operating systems will drop. Things should be getting better and better every year!

I am just sticking to Linux, and playing around with Workbench on my Amiga 1200 :) Never want to touch Windows again, unless its for the “occasional” game.

“Windows Vista limits what you can do with your own machine”
how? I am on Vista 64bits and I haven’t been limited by anything else than quicktime not being 64bits compatible.
“they pretty much tell you what software you can and cannot run”
I haven’t had that problem either…

ive only ever got the bluescreen once lol scary moment!

Vista is by far the best operating system which has been released since windows 2000. Windows 2000
is still to this date the most Stable operating system made, Now Windows xp was a kind add-on more
user friendly system which had many many problems from point one. Now yes most of this software issues
have now been fixed after service pack 2 and 80 updates later.

My hole point is that Vista is the best
stable operating system released since Windows 2000. 99% of the time Vista is just not working for people is because of Old hardware,
lack of brain cells and just people who think pushing a disk into the computer and installing will make
everything work. Please Correct me if im wrong some where, Vista updates are really making Vista a really pleasant Place to be , Fast and enjoyable!

lack of brain cells and just people who think pushing a disk into the computer and installing will make

Also , Id like to note about the MSconfig config about all the cores, I have tested this on my machine (E6600 2.4Ghz @ 3.4Ghz) and there is more
of a slow down than setting it to One core only. Microsoft cannot “Yes Cannot” make a great operating system for millions of Hardware configurations,

Software configs ! Its just amazing why people think it will work out of the box like a Mac . The only reason why Macs work is because there
isnt Thousands and thousands of different Configurations. They have a pre-set spec and they make the operating system around the system to make it
fully functional. Correct me if im wrong in some cases. Im more than happy to tell half the world how much better Vista is compared to XP and also
how and why it has been created.

Jnnw123

Read from the bottom up !

you should have to get new hardware to get good performance.. look at osx..full feature on 512mb ram..vista is a joke

you said it… “FAT” or bloated

bullshit…XP worked better than vista.

thats why macs are better. they work out the box.

typical Mac Fan, lol , your the only noob to reply to all.

99% of people who bad mouth vista have never even operated it or were just too stupid to figure it. they need to stay down there in xp world, with their used cars and minimum wage jobs, lmao

actually i got no money issues [my parents pretty much solved this for me],i’ve alread owned vista and i can assure you i know my way around pcs.Vista don’t exactly suck but they surely have some very serious probs, some of which are not exactly “their” problem.I kept vista on my secondary machine, downgraded to XP to my primary desktop and bought a MAC.Couldn’t be happier with leopard.

implying that vista has nothing wrong makes you look stupid and the least to say biashed.Microsoft could have done a lot better and i expect the SPs for vista to be something more than just security updates.Anyway,i completelly respect your opinion but in the same time i completelly disagree ^^

I have been using XP Pro since it came out. I got to know the features quite well. I bought two systems with Vista basic on both of them, a laptop, and a desktop. I have to say I am very happy with Vista.

I downgraded to xp, vista is bs

Chris seems to talk down to people like they were children, even when he tries to take opposite sides for the sake of an argument. He reminds me of clueless Bill O’Reilly when he talks about Iraq. Chris, $500 price tag for Ultimate is part of the deal, and no, MS did not deliver what they promised. They advertise Vista as a better OS than XP, which it is not because it’s slower, buggier and less compatible with hardware and games. Don’t turn into a Microsoft’s or even Apple’s marketing shill.

Also, in your other video you talk about OS X’s SpotLight feature being the best thing since sliced bread. Amazing! Hope it’s better than being able to run majority of games. Even many ppl who buy Vista preinstalled PCs often remove it and install XP from their older CDs, when they find out how buggy Vista is.

Moreover, I don’t care what an “average” consumer wants or what Microsoft’s mainstream market evaluation is. I will state that XP is currently BETTER and FASTER than Vista because I’ve tried both and because I’m thoughtful. I don’t want to change everyone’s mind but I will share my knowledge, which someone else will pick up and share with others.

I want to like Vista but not for what it currently costs and doesn’t deliver, and not right now. Vista might make more sense in a year or two when majority of its problems are fixed (if they are fixed). Sure, XP had problems at launch too and there were many advocates of sticking with 98 but it did not have NEARLY as many problems and many articles actually complimented XP on numerous improvements, including speed and stability, unlike with Vista right now.

I’d disagree. Vista works, and yeah it has its flaws. But they’ll be ironed out in time!

Go vista. Although i love os x

Saying ‘bamboozled’ and ‘duped’ with that accent is strongly discouraged. Mocking will be deemed mandatory.

Vista sucks balls. I was really pissed off with the first service pack. It was nothing but a piece of software to prevent piracy and a collection of the updates you could get from windows update without installing the service pack anyway. I’ll never upgrade to vista. I’m a computer repair tech and the most frequent thing I do is wipe Vista off of new computers that my clients buy and put on XP.

Vista is great if all you want to do is type in notepad, do a google search, and play spider solitaire. Anyone who actually uses their computer for anything important doesn’t like vista. Fuck, it uses a gig of ram just sitting there! People buy these awesome quad-core computers with 8GB of ram to run applications, not just an OS!!!

What Do You Think?
