Comments on: Windows Vista or XP?

Chris,

Have you seen issues with upgrading from Vista back to XP Pro??? I have a Gateway laptop here and its having issues with not seeing the “harddrive”. Do you know of any known issues about this. This could be just a true problem with the hard drive. Email me back for your input.
I cant stand VISTA. Im reloading so many pc’s and laptop back to XP, its unreal.

having 2 os on one puter i.e. vista & xp ..should this be partisioned on ??as two seprate os’s or like you said in the video “first xp ,then vista”??
promble is no audio when xp is in use..? audio with vista!
i know thatbtheb IS guy put vista first then xp..and they are partisioned.

if dad is buying a new computer suggest very seriouly that he looks into buying a MAC Here are several reasons: Ease of use Safari browser is what IE wants to be. Open office works just as well and is compatable with microsofr office and is a freebie. The biggest reason for me is that I am visually impaired and have to use on windows a 3rd party screen reader “Zoom Text” and a program that is every bit as good is built in to the Mac os. Take Dad to Mac store and have him check out the new Macs

Ubuntu Feisty Fawn is getting ever closer to `Ready for Prime Time’.

Without more info about the gent using the computer, it’s hard to say.
As a rule, it’s best to avoid new MS software at least til the first service pack (or fifth). If it must be Windows, XP is certainly a proven quantity and won’t require hideous amounts of horsepower to simply boot up. This way the computer is faster out of the gate.

You can always try out other operating systems via live cd’s or virtual machines.

Here’s my take on Vista,

I have had NO problems at all with my “virginal” installation of Vista Home Premium on a freshly re-formatted hard drive (done on March 10, 2007)and no problems with the “automatic” Vista updates. I run Rhinoceros 4, CS2 versions of PhotoShop and Illustrator, Office 2003 and the usual run of FPS games. Here’s my rig:
Mobo: ECS755-A2 (socket 754 board, AGP, SiS chipset) (retail)
CPU: Athlon 64 3000+ (Newcastle Family “F”, Model “C”) (retail)
RAM: two modules 512 Mb PC3200 DDR (”Extreme Performance” by Patriot)
Hard Drives: two WD Caviar WD1200JB
Video: XFX GeForce 7600GT (AGP bus) 560 Mhz, 256 Mb, DDR3 (retail)
Power Supply: Works Ultra Quiet 400 Watts (AMD approved)
Sound: SoundBlaster Audigy 2 “Value” Model SB0400 (retail)

Vista tells me that my bottleneck is the CPU giving me a score of 4.1 and that’s good enough for me until Direct X 10 is firmly entrenched and then I’ll upgrade. So far, no problems in games and no problems in 3D design creations.

I don’t know why all the fuss about Vista. I’ve been building PCs (ahem, assembling PCs) for over 20 years and I never run into the problems I read that other folks are having—call it luck, eh!

I agree with Jaxim. I bought a new computer with Vista installed and it works just fine. Other than Vista being a memory hog, I don’t have any complaints. To upgrade to Vista from XP would definately be a headache, I’ve tried it, I wouldn’t advise it.

An 82-year-old cousin has just bought a brand-new Lenovo (was IBM) laptop with Vista. It has only 512 MB of RAM, and is as slow as a wet week. Didn’t like to spoil her pleasure by telling her. Here in New Zealand several big appliance stores are advertising this configuration. Expect a lot of disapppointed people.

If his dad is buying a NEW computer, then I would suggest that he buy one with Vista. Most likely than not, the new computers can handle Vista; and why make him wait to install it later which is a bit of a hassle.
