Windows Movie Maker Problem

From Lockergnome reader Scott Holder:

I think I should have started with you instead of the lame support people from the manufacturer or MS. I need help with Windows Movie Maker. I have a Gateway laptop (MX6445) with a Turion 64 processor, 1 GB RAM, 120 GB HD, DVDRW, ATI Radeon Xpress 200M graphics, running XP MCE 2002. I’m having trouble with Windows Movie Maker reading and working with MPEG files. These files work fine on all my other PCs and laptops. If I import an MPEG file for editing, I can see it fine. It shows in the preview pane on the right too. However, if I drag more than one clip to the storyboard/timeline at the bottom and then press PLAY, nothing happens. The button changes indicating it “should” be playing but nothing is happening.

I contacted Gateway support twice. Both times they suggested removing Windows Movie Maker and reinstalling it. Duh! It’s part of SP2. It’s not a separate download. I use this laptop for work with video presentations through PowerPoint. Right now I’m having to create the WMV files on a different PC and transfer them to this laptop to use them. Can you provide any help? I would greatly appreciate it.

First, I’ve already established that Gateway support is beyond pathetic. Your first mistake was believing in what Gateway used to be rather than what they are today (don’t worry, I made the same mistake).

Second, I believe your problem is tied directly to codecs. Select Options from the Tools menu, then flip to the Compatibility tab. From there, remove the checkmarks from every box. Restart Windows Movie Maker (for good measure). Now, are those MPEGs happy campers? If not, you might consider converting them or editing them in another video tool altogether.

Welcome to the hell of video production.

The Windows XP version of Windows Movie Maker does a lousy job of editing MPEG files, even if you have the right codecs installed. You most definitely need to have a DVD player app like Cyberlink PowerDVD or WinDVD installed to have any hope of editing the files, but you’re ultimately better off either converting the files or editing them elsewhere. The free VirtualDubMod will do the trick for opening MPEG files for editing and/or saving out for editing in Movie Maker.

If you must use Windows Movie Maker then I would suggest snagging a copy of free copy of MPEG Streamclip http://www.squared5.com

That rascal can open these formats (From the Guide:)

It can open many file formats: muxed files MPEG, MPG, VOB, PS, M2P, MOD, VRO, DAT, DCM, VDR, PVR; transport streams TS, M2T, MTS, MMV, REC, VID, AUD, AVR, TP, TP0, TRP; demuxed files M2V, M1V, MPV, AIFF, AIF, M1A, MP2, MPA, AC3; QuickTime-compatible files MOV, DV, AVI, MP4, DIVX; pictures TIFF, JPEG;

But wait, there is more – if you need a quick screen shot from the video it can do that too and you get to choose the size that you want. I’m using it to convert MP4 files from my camcorder.

COULD YOU PLEASE HELP ME WITH A PROBLEM? ALWAYS WHEN I TRY TO IMPORT MUSIC INTO MOVIE MAKER, IT SAY THIS : The file C:\Documents and Settings\User\Desktop\Hinder – Lips Of An Angel.mp3 is not valid because it does not contain any information. -IT HAPPENS WITH EVERY SONG, EVERY MUSIC FILE…I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH THIS SO PLEASE IF YOU KNOW, WRITE ME HERE OR TO petralila@azet.sk …thanks:)

Hey, I have a sanyo HD Video camera which recordes MP4 files onto SD Card , yet i can’t load the files into Windows Movie Maker, I keep getting this error Message

The file C:\Documents and Settings\Action\Desktop\Movie Tasks\19th Birthday Party.MP4 is not a supported file type, and it cannot be imported into Windows Movie Maker.

Can anyone help me ?

I found that Windows Movie Maker 6.0 (Vista) cannot increase the audio volume. This capability is available on version 2.0. I couldn’t believe that MS removes important function in a newer version. If I’m wrong, please let me know.

I downloaded some stuff from youtube. Nothing made by anyone else. Like tv clip or something. I use this website that converts from flv to windows. When I import the clips to my wm maker I get one really picture and the rest blank. Also the minuate I try and edit them the go blank. Got any suggestions.

Regarding Windows Vista MovieMaker:
Why the heck does MovieMaker freeze up about 20 or 30% into publishing on to a DVD? I have imported the MPEGs properly and I tried your suggestion re: codecs (above), but am still having a rough time with this. Would I be better off spending a few bucks and buying Cyberlink’s PowerDirector?

Dear Chris

I experience a similar problem Windows Movie Maker (version 6). I have recently bought a Sony VAIO laptop (VGN-FZ11M) with Windows Vista Home Premium. When I import a video/audio (no matter the type) for editing in the preview plane, I can see it (I mean the frame) but when I press the play button I can not see or hear anything. If I drag the clip down to the storyboard/timeline I can still see the frame but again when I press the play button I can not see or hear anything. If I split the clip in several other clips I can see the frames but I again, when I press the play button I can not see or hear anything. The same videos/audio can be imported into other Windows Movie Makers (both XP and Vista with the same codec configurations in the tool menu). Also, I have installed Windows Movie Maker 2.6 but then the problems are even worse; no audio/video can be imported. I do not know if this is relevant, but I would like to add that the Windows Media Player (version 11) does not play .wmv and .wav files and I have to use another player (for example, Quick Time Player)

I would highly appreciate your help in solving this problem. I wish there was a way to go back to XP but SONY VAIO does not have the drivers for my model.

Regards

How can VOB files be made to play on both media player 11 and movie maker?

I haven’t used Movie Maker much, but I had a question about audio from video clips. I have the Vista version, and it appears that there is only one way to balance the audio from the movies and from separate music. The problem is, it looks like you can only balance the different audio sources ONCE for the whole movie. Is there a way to get around this, so I can mute the video clip audio and bring it in between music clips?
Thanks.

I’m having a bit of a problem on viewing the files I import into movie maker:
The videos I import seem to play ok, but on the clips, I can view one clip great, but the rest are blanked out and only the audio seems to be working (And it’s happened on ALOT of clips).
What’s wrong with it, and how do I fix it?

WMM works for me when I only do about 30 – 40 files at a time then combine them at teh end to make full movie. So i think it is the number of files & not the size that made min not finish or caused an error.

Help!! I’m having a problem with my WMM v.6 (vista). First, I still can drag medias to the timeline board, I can still put effects and transitions. Then suddenly when I’m about to test my work.. the app suddenly crashed down, and expectedly freezes.. at first I can still move the cursor but then later it stop moving too! My notebook is running at 896 RAM, T2130 @ 1.86GHz 1.40 GHz, and 32-bit operating system.. I really don’t know what seems to be the probelm, because with my other laptop I’m doing fine with WMV v.6 nice and cheesy.. Please help me!!

I have problem recording my video in my dvd it says error synchronizing project please help

my WMM 6.0 freezes after 39% of publishing video to desktop. Why 39%?? It’s strange because WMM worked perfectly the first day that I used it. The problem started occurring day 2.

nevermind, I followed a tip from a comment posted above. I went to OPTIONS > COMPATIBILITY > unchecked all boxes… WMM 6.0 publishes videos to desktop now.

i try opening windows movie make but it says it cant find the audio hardware required for it, any ideas cus i dont get it

Hi i have a serious prble with movie mke i have a new vaio too and it came with vista and movie maker. It works great but when i try to save anything it always keeps a blue save project label accross the screen and it doesn’t go away until you turn it off

please help me cause its getting annoying!

I have a WindowsXP. I have lately been getting into creating my own music videos. I use my own songs, usually, and film from my FujiFilm FinePix camera. I guess the files I use are MPEG’s, but for some reason, Windows Movie Maker doesn’t work with them, although it says so when I look into the file types it’s compatible with. Also, my own songs aren’t working with the program either. They’re MP3’s. What can I do? What’s the best FREE music/video making software you know of?

I am having trouble with my audio. Every time that I want to import music or music files, it says:
The file C:\Documents and Settings\Frankie-San\Desktop\iTunes Music\Jonas Brothers\Jonas Brothers1 S.O.S..m4p is not a supported file type, and it cannot be imported into Windows Movie Maker.
Can anyone help me?

I could do everything I needed to in WMM that was bundled with Vista Home Prem (I imagine it’d be v.6) EXCEPT publish. (I’m putting together personal videos to an MP3 track). Didn’t realise the number of codecs from other install programs I had on, turned them all off and so far it’s publishing now! THANKS!

Although I should say, if you’re going to get serious with vid editing, steer clear from WMM. It sucks ass.

What Do You Think?
