Windows Media DRM is Corrupted

So, I’m getting ready for a trip to Colorado Springs for my future brother-in-law’s nuptuals. I figured I’d give the Clix a shot with Urge. I fire up the Windows Media Player and… blammo:

Your Windows Media DRM is Corrupted

“Your Windows Media DRM is Corrupted.” *sigh* I love DRM. It’s awesome. DRM is teh shiz. I want to make love to DRM, it’s so sexy. DRM is the ultimate. Give me more DRM. I want to spread DRM on my toast in the morning. I need DRM in my life.

Amaze your friends the next time they beg you to come over and fix their computer problems. Using GoToAssist, you can instantly and easily log into their computer, allowing you to quickly diagnose those pesky errors, or even help them understand how their new program works.

t buy a Western Digital ‘My Book World Edition’. The only way to stop more DRM’d garbage like this from being made in the first place is to not buy it when it gets produced. Oh and of course, also don’t buyDRM’d audiotracks; if you’re going to buy music downloads (rather than say ripping CDs you bought so as to get higher quality; FLAC is very nice :), do it in a non-DRM’d format, like MP3.

Chris Pirllo wants to have sex with DRM

Chris Pirillo recent experience with DRM shows exactly why its a horrible horrible technology that should never be used.  Im sure neither MSFT, Urge or any of his other online music providers will replace his music either.

Ah, DRM… As a Linux user I don’t usually run into that landmine. Usually. The other day I stopped at McDonalds for a bite to eat and they have a ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ contest where you get codes on large drinks and fries and enter them on a website. I didn’t win :) But… I was offered a ‘free music download’.

“Pirates_of_The_Caribbean-_Dead_Mans_Chest_Medley.wma”

Cute. OK. Hmm… In the fine print it says that it won’t play on Macs or on iPods.

I try it and it won’t play in Totem or Mplayer or VLC… Codec problem? Nope; I have the naughtly w32codecs package installed. Xine was kind enough to inform me that the “Media stream [is] scrambled/encrypted” Its DRMd. Yay.

Looks like I have an interestingly named paperweight on my desktop now ;)

There USED TO be a way to back up your DRM via Windows Media Player. I blogged it here: http://www.techlifeweb.com/2006/02/licensed-content-in-windows-media.html
I was just checking today and MS has _disabled_ that feature in Windows Media Player 11.
Nice.

“DRM is teh shiz.” Yo, Yo, Chris — stands for “Da Runs Man”.

And now for something completely different. Since so much of what’s covered here on Online Marketing Blog deals with the marketing of blogs, I thought adding some interviews with peo…

It’s not the DRM that has an issue. It’s an error in Urge. I had the same issue on a clean install of WMP11 on a clean install of WIndows XP. It’s BS, and Urge has no idea how to fix it. I’ve been around and around with them about this already.

How ironic. I got this message today when trying to sync my Creative Vision M today even though I could do it successfully until then. Luckily I rebooted and it worked again. Weird.

I had the same issue when I first tried Urge (before I downloaded any content). I don’t know if this screws up your licenses if you already have files.

I resolved it by doing the following:
Move/Delete all files in %allusersprofile%\DRM
Visit http://drmlicense.one.microsoft.com/Indivsite/en/indivit.asp
Click Upgrade
Restart Urge

Heh, none of the OD2 front-ends work. If you want DRM that works go with iTunes – otherwise I’d just stick with Emusic if I were you.

I just bought a new computer and it did the same thing when I loaded it. Wierd thing is – it works on my laptop perfectly. I hope they fix it – URGE is the only thing that works well with my MP3 player.

Thanks Bucky, that did it. Nice little hidden directory there, %allusersprofile%\DRM.

hah, when i tried to go to my all users folder in windows, it crashed! and when it rebooted i didnt have the heart to click the down arrow in GRUB to go back to windows. Linux FTW!

Ohhh! I just feel so bad for Microsoft sometimes
