ComputerNerd called in to ask what IM client I used when I “used to use Windows”. I had to remind him I haven’t switched away from anything. I still use Windows every day. In short, I use Miranda on Windows. Miranda IM is an open-source multi protocol instant messenger client for Microsoft Windows. It’s smaller, faster, easier! My first IM client was Trillian, but I got tired of it after awhile, because I felt it was running too slow. Miranda is fast on Windows, let me tell you. I really love this program. It’s sleek. It’s configurable.
If I am on the road, I tend to use Meebo. If it ran as a desktop widget, I’d be thrilled to death. meebo.com is a website for instant messaging from absolutely anywhere. Whether you’re at home, on campus, at work, or traveling foreign lands, hop over to meebo.com on any computer to access all of your buddies (on AIM, Yahoo!, MSN, Google Talk, ICQ and Jabber) and chat with them, no downloads or installs required, for free!
I know a lot of people use Pidgin. Pidgin is free software. It is licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL) version 2. This means you are free to use it and to modify it, but if you distribute your modifications you must distribute the modified source code as well. It supports a wide variety of IM clients, making it quite popular.
However, I choose my IM client based on what works the best for me. At this point, it’s Miranda FTW.
The caller also asked me about andLinux. andLinux is a complete Ubuntu Linux system running seamlessly in Windows 2000 based systems (2000, XP, 2003, Vista; 32-bit versions only). This project was started for Dynamism for the GP2X community, but its userbase far exceeds its original design.
I just think anyone who can run more than one Operating System should be doing so. I do… every day. In this day and age, you shouldn’t be arguing over which OS is better, or which OS you should choose. You should be exploring what is out there, and running as many as you possibly can.

I was a Trillian user until a year ago. Now I use Meebo all the time. I log in daily from work and from home, so it helps to have a centralised web application with my preferences and chat logs.
It’s free, it doesn’t take up any real estate (just another tab in the browser), it’s lightning fast and it keeps evolving.

Amen. I use Windows XP, HP Unix, and Ubuntu at work. At home I relax with my Macs. I use a lot of OS’s all day everyday, but when I’m at home…100% OS X. Why? I really don’t know it is just easy to use and doesn’t get in the way. It’s just pure fun. At work Windows and Unix totally feel like work to me because I am at work. Once you have tried all your options, you will find the OS that’s right for you. I am a Mac fanboy, but I am not a basher either. If I had to use OS X at work, I might have a different view.

The best I’ve found is Trillian. You can log in to AIM, Yahoo, ICQ, and MSN in one client. Very customizable and easy to use.

no way is xp more productive than osx workflow wise.. if people like the way a mac works and they want the functionality of a dock let him have it. why diss someone for wanting a mac desktop. Taskbar more effectve than dock.lol. no way. i dont want to have to run ANY background process like launchie. run 3 diff apps just to get teh functions you want. forget it.get a mac. you dont like the dock. kill it and dont use it.

Freedesktop has a API for universal messaging. I think its name is Empaty. Or an application uses that API.

Great Post!
I must say Pidgin is the best IM for me, I used to use MSN Live but couldn’t take the slow buggy program will adverts everywhere! Pidgin loads fasts, and also can handle a lot of different IM accounts at once, I have gTalk, MSN and many IRC chats loaded at once, its great! Shame it didnt have an easy theming feature!

I use pidgin at home and pidginportable at work from my usb drive. I was wondering how meebo is on the iPhone. I just got one and the lack of an IM client is a little frustrating. I guess when the sdk comes out someone will make i(m)phone app. I just hope Jobs lets people write apps like palm instead of trying to control them too much.
Sorry for rambling
