Windows 7 – Better for Gamers?

During a live call session the other night, people were on the phone to gab about Windows 7. We talked about everything from security to aesthetics. This particular caller, Sonu, is a member of our live community on a regular basis. He is a gamer, and had something interesting to note in favor of Windows 7 that I hadn’t yet heard. I’m wondering if you are experiencing this, as well.
Sonu has been using Windows Vista for awhile now, and has only recently upgraded to Windows 7. He has the exact same hardware setup, and all of the same software installed now as he did with Vista. However, he’s noticed one very large – and very welcome – change: he is getting 10-15 frames-per-second (FPS) more than he did back when he used Vista.
Is this something you other gamers out there are noticing as well? I imagine that this absolutely is a very good upgrade for you if you are. Let’s hear from you gaming Geeks… are you getting more FPS now on Windows 7 than you did on other operating systems?

I haven’t used Windows 7 personally yet, but from the review on Anandtech, Win 7 performs pretty similarly to Vista on the gaming front – http://www.anandtech.com/systems/showdoc.aspx?i=3666

I wonder what game it is because in general XP still offer more FPS than others. I had more FPS with GTA 4 on W7 but that was very exceptional.
As for the last question – I would prefer losing Windows. Then I can use Ubuntu to surf online.

See, I play a lot of free MMOs, and therein lay my only real problem with W7. They are almost all Korean, and they all use anti-cheat programs, and a bunch of those didn’t work on 7, meaning I couldn’t play my favorite games. I’m sure that’ll be over soon though, now that it’s released to retail. I can definitely say it seemed to do things MORE INTELLIGENTLY than Vista; there were a million little tweaks in the operating system that just made a whole lot of sense.
I wouldn’t go out and buy it, but if I bought a pc with it installed, I wouldn’t revert like I did with Vista.

I have seen a General Performance increase with my games, i however don’t believe myself that the windows effects the FPS of my games, this generally has to do with the GPU FOR ME, but i did notice that 10-15 increase in “some” games when i booted up windows 7, though i can’t rly tell the difference as vista and 7 our generally the same in terms of Gaming performance on Aero etc..i most certainly seen better multi-core performance for games in windows 7 then vista.

I have been using Win 7 since RC1 was released. It has been very stable. Games do seem smoother from Vista to Win7. I am running a quad core with a 9800GTX so the games were decent anyways. I would say there was an average of 5-10 FPS jump in TeamFortress 2 with settings all the way up at 1680×1050. The biggest change though was switching between full screen game mode and the desktop. It was a much smoother switch and when switching back to a game in progress the transition time was less than half.
