WicketPixie WordPress Theme Screencast
I wrote about it yesterday when I initially rolled out this new WordPress theme, but now I’ve had time to make a very brief screencast that explains a bit more about it. You’ll see that there’s a lot going on behind the scenes. WicketPixie gives you:
- Your own Activity Stream / Social Graph page
- Your own Collected Favorites page / News Aggregator
- An easy ability to change certain style elements
- A high-quality Web design for your site
- A clean way to present ALL your social profiles
- The freedom to donate to future theme development
- Gravatar support within WordPress v2.5+
- The ability to use any feed source as a Status message
- Areas optimized for advertising
Not bad for free, eh? I’m likely to use CC BY-SA 3.0 for the license, with the hope that a small group of enthusiasts can help me maintain and build it further.
Right now, we’re working our way through a few last-minute layout bugs (cross-browser compatibility). I’m considering holding off a public release until it’s been modified for WPMU and implemented for bloggers on Lockergnome – which I don’t know how to do, since I’m not a WPMU guru. If you know any experienced developer who can help with that part of the process, I’m all ears. Until then, this screencast should whet your appetite:
I really want to ask you this, before I make the files available for download: would you rather download the plain version of WicketPixie or the version I’ve tweaked for my own site (understanding that with the latter, you’d have to make more changes to the core templates).

I think the core version would probably be the best one to release to be honest. Or, infact, both.
I think I would probably download the core version :D

Great work, Chris.
However I think you’ve gone over the top on Adsense on your blog pages.
You’re carrying four on this particular page, and the rules say only 3, last I looked.

I love what you have done with it. The way you integrate other social networking sites is revolutionary, and I think that WordPress will become a way for you to combine all of your social networking sites into one place where people can contact you.
Again, what you have accomplished is revolutionary. Good job Chris!

I think both versions would be the best. The “Core” version as the normal download and your “Tweaked” version as an optional download for fellow geeks who want to help push the them to the fullest.
I myself would download both themes.

Hi Chris,
VERY useful theme… I like it!
I would love BOTH themes. The core template unchanged, as well as the one you’ve changed. This way I can decide, after seeing both, which one will work best for me.
And, seriously — it covers both angles for all people.
Those who want the core template, out of the box, can have access to it… while those of us who like to see the changed version and have access — are accommodated as well.
I vote for BOTH versions to be made available to the general public for download.
All good things,
Bonnie Gean

I’m likin’ the new theme! Looks gooooood! Very functional from what I’ve seen… and there are very very few flaws. Many lil things that I’ve found are just little pet peeves of mine. @Alister what ads (AdBlock is a wonderful thing).
Chris I just wanted to say that I recently paid for a WordPress theme (80 bucks) I did all the homework and we thought it was fine. It was a total waste of money and a rip off. But it had nothing like your theme has in the way of ease of use, options for theme design and elements right in WordPress (no hard coding!). Very, very nice job.
Every single premium (paid for) theme should be at least this! People will pay for ease of use and your offering it for free. Impressed. Premium developers, I hope you have taken note.
For my 2 cents worth – if I were to use your theme I would want the bare bones version.
Email me if you want to know what theme not to buy.

Chris:
Please release both. You have a number of readers/watchers from both camps who would each benefit from each release. You’ve got webdev’s who would like to customize for themselves, and you’ve got hobbyists who are not quite there yet and who would probably get a lot out of seeing a fully functional theme with customized code, plugins, and real-world configuration values.
If you have to release one or the other, release the plain version… but keep in mind the positive effects of releasing both.

I prefer the plain version. That way, each individual can tweak it the way they want. However, if an individual is new to website devolvement and they don’t know how to make those tweaks they can still have a great theme without having to worry about it looking the same as your site.

With this sort of theme, there is always going to be new ideas and new releases. What would be nice is not just a recent tweet but a choice to have a recent facebook status aswell, maybe on a rotation so it doesnt clutter up the page.
Something i will definately use and most probably donate a little bit of cash to.
Good work Chris and all others involved!

Congrats and I look forward to being able to implement either version. In reality, I have some sites that the bare theme is best for and others that could use the fully tweaked version.

Hey, Chris
I think it is wonderful what you are doing with the WicketPixie Wordpress theme (let me guess you named the project after you dogs) anyway I like them to but you were asking to either release the theme plain or with you style that you have used on your webpages but I would like to suggest another alternative can you change back the content that you but on it and just have it not as a plain theme but with a few of the features you have done, you know what I’m sayin’ anyway I love the work you do and keep it up.

I love it! The “floating” background is something that I have seen before in other Wordpress themes, but I have never seen them so well utilized in this small package. The page load times are also very good for such a complex theme, and it is quite obvious that you have spent a lot of time on Optimization.
I don’t currently use Wordpress for anything, though I have used Blogger in the past, but in seeing the potential of Wordpress here, I will most likely start working on Wordpress myself!
Kudos!

WicketPixie is one of the most useful Wordpress Themes that I have seen on any website. It actually connects all of your other profiles and accounts on other sites and displays most of them on a single page for you to view. I think it will help a lot of people to find out more about who the real Chris Pirillo is.

That’s pretty nice indeed. I my self am not into web page and blog stuff because it’s all too confusing and i just leave that stuff to people who know how to do it, but now that you are offering us this smart little thing, i might even consider making one if there is a need for that. Ty

I love everything about this theme except for the name… perhaps I just don’t get it. I know it is a combination of your dogs’ names, but it seems it deserves a more relevant title. Anyways, great work!

I absolutely love this new theme. I found it on my Lockergnome blog about a week ago, and have it fully customized. I haven’t watched the full screencast yet, but I will sometime in the near future. One question, however.
Does anyone know how to change the links on the black bar on the top? The one where Chris has put “About, Network”, etc? I’ve tried the “Widgets” option, but can’t seem to figure it out. If you can, please let me know at mattstech@gmail.com.

“Not bad for free, eh?” Not bad at all.Wicket and Pixie are the V.I.P,the main actors and characters.I think it is a funny but a good choice of a name.

Chris, I think you should release both of them and see how people like it. They could make their own little tweaks to it. But hopefully this works out well for you. I will get it when i can.

I really like this theme! The heads surrounding the top ad are a nice touch.

Great work Chris. A nice, simple, elegant design that is easy to navigate and brimming with functional features. Lots of really nice innovation without become confusing or overwhelming. Make it a real ease for new community members to get involved quickly and effectively.
