Why Should you Drink Water?

Joshua(XP) is a regular member in our live chat room. He knows that most of us Geeks drink a lot of soda, and wanted to share with us the reasons why we should be drinking more water.
- Water is the best thing you can drink, because water actually replenishes your body… unlike soda. Water actually relieves any hunger cravings you might have. I found that when I drink water, I actually do not feel as hungry as I would have if I had drunk soda. Soda, on the other hand, does not fill your thirst well enough so you have to keep drinking it to feel relieved.
- Before you go to sleep, always drink a glass of water or two in order to make you fall asleep faster and wake up in a more refreshed mood. On the other hand, drinking soda contains caffeine which makes you stay awake. Drink water before you go to bed, it’s better for you and you’ll have a better night’s sleep.
- Now that we know Spring is upon us and Summer is creeping around the corner, the outside temperatures are increasing and it’s going to get much hotter outside. I know it may be obvious to say, but many people fail to bring a bottle of water with them if they are going outside to have fun. You must understand that not bringing water (and bringing soft drinks instead) is very dangerous and potentially life threatening. Your body perspires and constantly loses water. Remember, also carry a bottle of water with you at all time… it’s a must.
- You may have known of people that say Gatorade is a lot healthier than water. While in some ways they may be correct, they do not realize how much sugar Gatorade contains. Gatorade is made to make your body become energy-charged, and help you with physical work outs and sports training. Gatorade is not made to be consumed all the time and could actually make you gain weight over time. Drinking water does not contain sugar.
- Since this is March and the Flu season is all around everywhere making us sick… it’s good to know that water can play a major part in your recovery from the Flu. For example, when you wake up in the morning with a dry, scratchy throat… drink hot water. This relieves any mucus that is stuck in your throat and or chest so that sore throat pain goes away much faster. Another tip for the Flu is to not drink cold water at all. Cold water irritates the throat and chest more than it can actually help. Ice, for example, is not the key to getting over your Flu, because it makes you feel colder and sicker at the same time. Just drink hot water, or eat lots of Ramen noodles.
POST UPDATE After this was posted, I received some very cool information from Dave that I wanted to pass along, as well.
Water is not only important for keeping your body hydrated, but it is also the primary compound of life. In your body, a reaction is constantly taking place in which a compound know as Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) is hydrolyzed by water to yield Inorganic phosphate and Adenosine diphosphate (ADP). What does this all mean? Well, the bonds that hold the phosphates together contain chemical energy which, when broken by an H2O molecule, is released. Thus, the energy released can then be stored and used by your body. Isn’t it cool!? Simply put, water is also an essential to the production of energy in your body. People often don’t realize that without water the food we eat can not be transformed into usable energy. So please, drink water!

I agree with most of what Joshua says here with the exception of drinking before going to bed. WikiHow states: “Increasing your water intake may cause you to have to get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom. To avoid this, you may want to stop drinking water a few hours before bedtime–or make sure you visit the toilet before bed!” I have enough trouble sleeping through the night without having to get out of bed in the middle of the night to use the facilities.
I have also spent 10 years teaching cold weather camping techniques. One of the hardest points I need to stress to my campers is that they need to stay hydrated during the day. On the other hand, anything that will force them to leave their sleeping bags in the night will be extremely detrimental. Leaving their bags, warmed by their own body heat, dressing to go out of their tent, opening their tent to the outside air, expelling some quantity of warm fluids heated by their body, returning to a now cold tent, getting into a now cold sleeping bag, and having to expend more body heat to hopefully warm that bag back up is a HUGE waste of stored heat that one usually will not be able to replace.
Because of this, I train my campers to drink fluids (preferably water!) all day long, but to cut off all fluid intake after dinner. No sitting around the fire drinking hot chocolate, tea, or coffee before bed.
For these reasons, I can’t stress enough that having a drink of water before bed will not assure a better night’s sleep nor waking up in a more refreshed mood.

Hey Chris,
Although water is the BEST thing to be drinking, there are many people out there (like me) who just out right hate the taste. Some people say “water doesn’t have a taste” but to me, those people are out of their minds. To me, water has a very distinct taste that I only enjoy when I am overwhelmingly dehydrated. I thought that people should be aware that there are many alternatives to water that are ALMOST as hydrating. For example: Crystal Light. This company is a fabulous alternative to water; it hydrates and has a nice taste. This is just one of many water alternatives.

Don’t forget to be careful to not drink too much water.
Water intoxification can cause similar feelings to being drunk on alcohol, only it can cause swelling in your brain which can lead to slipping into a coma state and sometimes death.
As with everything, moderation is the key – don’t gulp down pint after pint of water, sip your drinks and take it in steadily (that way you will remain hydrated and the excess water doesn’t pass through your kidneys and then to your bladder as quickly).
Also, apparently, studies have shown tea (on its own, no milk, no sugar… just tea) to be better than just water on its own for detoxing the body, hydrating it and adding a few items such as tanins that help with the general well being of your body.
*but* if you put milk in your tea, you destroy any of its healthy properties!

brady: the flavour you are tasting isn’t the water but whatever is added to the water.
Water here in the UK tastes different to the water I have had in florida – ours has extra fluoride whereas the water in florida is very sulphury in both smell and flavour.

As alphaxion said, too much water can be very dangerous to your health!
There is a story I heard about awhile ago about a woman who was in a drinking contest. She drank far too much water, far too quickly and ended up dying because of it. You can view that story and other information on it here: http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=strange-but-true-drinking-too-much-water-can-kill
Please use water in moderation. Even something as healthy as water has it’s limits.
Also, you should find out what exactly is in your water. Some studies have shown that various medications, among other things not healthy for you, were found in everyday drinking water. You should be able to find such information here: http://www.epa.gov/safewater/dwinfo/index.html
With all that said, I do agree with Joshua. Water is good for you and we should be drinking at the very least 8 ounces a day. I’m not sure what the true amount is, I think it goes by a person’s weight, but I do know that I certainly don’t drink enough plain water. I prefer to drink tea.

I can barely drink the water in my area, even after being put through a Brita pitcher and refrigerated, even during the winter with environment-chilled waterpipes (activated charcoal fails me!).
At the same time, many bottled waters (most of which are from ‘municipal sources’ anyway) and ionized waters make me gag.
I try to drink what I can, but between the gagging and occasional mouthfuls of other minerals (from an otherwise sparkling clean looking water content in the pitcher), it’s hard to keep anything down.
If I really want to drink water, I make sure to have a large glass with ice. I can only drink my water (when just a drink, and not ramen-flavored) very cold, so the ice helps me to ignore everything else (with the ice itself being made from the same filtered water).

the ice, just like with hot drinks, numbs the tastebuds and so you taste less.
Personally, I love water and fruit juices.. tho, I do notice that dentists are beginning to wage war against the fruit juice because it apparently decays the teeth too much.
Tho, I’d say drink the fruit juice cause the vitamins in them often outweigh the damaged teeth!

Diet soda has no calories, it’s still not good for you. I would try to avoid artificial sweeteners. I quit drinking diet soda and still lost 10 pounds in a week without really trying.
Then I got pregnant – again. :)

Distilled water may not be good because it may leech the minerals from your body.
We just use an under-the-sink filter and I carry Nalgene bottles with me. It’s much cheaper than bottled water. Although if I spend the day away from home longer than I intended and run out of water, I will buy a bottle.
I feel the same way about coffee. It must have cream. If I want it sweet, real maple syrup is good.

Look up “Fluoride” on mercola dot com. Sodium Fluoride is nothing more than toxic waste from the aluminum factories. There are also studies that has shown that fluoride does lower IQ in children.
Then there’s the “nasties” that water picks up on the way to your home: Lead, iron oxide, etc, etc.

That they have higher IQ than us?
1. Look up Weston A Price foundation and you will find that the few hunter gatherer tribes have really good teeth – in spite of the fact that they have had no fluoride.
2. I have had no fluoride treatment when I was a kid (we had well water) and my teeth are extremely strong. My husband has had a root canal, and he had to have fluoride treatment as a kid. What does that tell you? It could just be genetics.
