Why Put Windows on a Mac?

Ponzi is playing with her new MacBook Air. She has partitioned it nearly in half. She’s planning to use this for a specific thing… light travel. She looked at several different lightweight notebooks, to make things a bit easier on her when she is traveling.
She is wanting to put Vista on it. However, it’s going to drag and not run very well on the MacBook Air. She can always take it off if it doesn’t work well. RathofMac insists that she shouldn’t be trying to put Vista on the MacBook Air. I, however, want her to put it on there, so she can experience it for herself. The setup with Boot Camp isn’t very easy for her. If I weren’t standing there telling her step by step what to do, she would be lost right now. That is a direct quote from Ponzi, I swear it! She said that Vista made her feel stupid. However, OS X was easy for her.
Anyway, RathofMac feels she shouldn’t try Vista on the MacBook Air for several reasons. The dashboard specialty keys won’t work. iSight probably won’t work. Many of the drivers will either not work, or need serious updating.
As someone who knows Ponzi very well, I know that the MacBook Air is the best option for her, and her needs. It’s very small and lightweight. For me… I couldn’t use it. It wouldn’t work for me because it doesn’t have enough power. But for an average user… this Air seems to be perfect.

Why put Windows on a Mac? Because clients demand IE compatibility and Windows is the only way to really run it. If you’re not a Windows user and don’t need it for work, don’t do it. You don’t need any particular reason to NOT install Windows.

I’m a long, long time Mac user, over 20 years.
I have a MacBook with XP virtualized and running Office 2003. I like it! If Office on Windows was the same on Mac, I’d use the Mac version.

So why is dual-booting better for her needs than virtualization? Is this about making use of all the RAM … or what?

I’ve used Macs since 1984, but I do web work and you absolutely have to test for IE 6 & 7 if you’re coding to standards. So, I’ve got two installations of Windows running in Parallels and at some point will probably get Vista on there as well.

I used to use Boot Camp, but eventually got rid of it because I no longer needed Windows, and it was just taking up space. I had to remake the partition so I could do some other things, and then after that I deleted it. The next time I needed it (there are all like a year apart), I just got VMware Fusion, and I love it. Not so good for gaming, but great for basic stuff.
I love Boot Camp, and I love using it. The only reasons I would not use it now is because of the lack of being able to transfer files easily. I hope that Apple comes out with a tool like MacDrive for boot camp partitions.

I considered dual booting my MacBook Pro but I truly have had no use for it.
Anything my PC could do I can do on a Mac, and usually BETTER!
I am slightly worried about leaving home next year, as I won’t have a dedicated PC…but I’m not gonna worry about it TOO much.

I agree that if you are using a program with windows and is more comfortable with it, then to go ahead with it. Getting used to something new when you simply want to be productive and get things done can be very frustrating.

chris im sorry if you already said this but which program do you think would be best to put different OSs on a Mac. I think it would be a good idea to put a poll up on the chat one day. and the macbook air is freaking awesome i love it man. But me i think you have more power if you put windows on a Mac

A macbook air is way too expensive for me. If you need a mac, I would recommend a macbook. Its only a little less than double the weight and it has many more features like the superdrive and a better processor. If you need a PC, I think the eeepc is quite good with a customized linux or Windows.

Although I spend most of my time in Mac OS X, I have found that dual booting between OS X and Windows XP has been my best bet for overall performance. As a college Computer Science major, all of my computer programming is done within Visual Studio and my Calculus III course requires Internet Explorer in order to do online assignments. The convenience of having two operating systems on my MacBook certainly beats having to go to the computer lab to work on programming projects or do math homework on the available Windows desktops.

I agree Vista is now 10 times better than it was released last year. Vista SP1 fixed all these flaws and being a vista user from its launch until now, i was pissed off at first but now, i really like it. It much better than xp.

?? Installing Visa?? It’s so easy - you enter the license key, then you select the partition and that’s about it. It reboots a couple of times and you’re done. I’m not sure what she’s going on about.

Vista is a good OS, but MacOS X is way better. There is millions of viruses to Windows but not a single virus for MacOS, You have probably never used a Mac, so thats why you are so convinced that Vista is a better OS that MacOS.
MacOS is faster then Vista, its much more secure and it is eyecandy.
Vista is slow as hell, its not secure at all and it is as ugly as Windowns 95.
MacOS is the best OS the world has ever known.
Say no more.

Umm, no… Just because OS X has 144,000 fewer viruses and malicious attacks than Vista, doesn’t mean that has no viruses, every single operating system has viruses and malicious attacks.

You’re retarded, banstaman. Vista has more security than OS X because Mac OS X uses UNIX, which has very few viruses. Oh my god dude you’re like the typical computer idiot.

Vista may have more security measures built it, that however, does not mean that it is safer than OS X, it simply isn’t! I would know!
