Why is the iPhone SDK Important?
Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed
There’s buzz everywhere about Apple’s Software Development Kit - or SDK- release. You can, of course, download the SDK if you are using OS X. Two of the biggest reasons why people wouldn’t get an iPhone are now obliterated. People who already had the iPhone are saying “Great! Now we like it even more!”. I have some excellent ideas, but I’m not a developer. If anyone is a dev and doesn’t know what to write for the iPhone, get in touch with me! We can come up with some cool things.
I have put together five points why this is such a huge announcement. Here they are, in no certain order:
- The SDK is free to download. It costs you nothing until you want to put it into the iStore (iTunes). The cost is $99.00, which isn’t really that much in this case.
- Games are coming now! There will be games out the wazoo, that is for sure. If you watched the demo… you were likely oooh’ing and ahhh’ing.
- There will be a 70% revenue share with the app developer, with a built-in marketing and updating mechanism. This is important. Software devs have a lot of barriers. They have to not only develop something good, they have to find an audience. In this instance, Apple will have the audience already in place for them.
- Free applications can and WILL be developed. The free ones are likely to be things built on the Twitter api, YouTube, Flickr, and all the other Social Networking sites. That’ll make it easier for you to do your networking, right from your iPhone.
- iTunes makes discovery and software management a *SNAP* for users. I’ve had all the different types of Windows Mobile devices. I could easily put something on there, and extend the functionality. Trying to update the software is a pain. It’s not the software… it’s the implementation. Apple has already reinvented this, and made it so simple to do the updates.

Hey Chris,
Towards the end you said a very key statement. You said your at that point where you just want your technology to work and I couldn’t agree more. I went mac over a year ago after being a windows user and windows IT (MCSE) guy. I got tired of always haveing to “hack” at my computer to get it to run right. I got tired of the babysitting. Spyware detection, anti-virus, malware, on and on….and then keeping those apps updated. Then issues with the registry. I don’t have to tell you because im sure you know what its like. I felt like I spent more time babysitting my computer than getting any work done. I had been a mac admirer ever since OSX simply because I loved the unix fundamentals under the hood. So a year ago I made the switch with a mac mini and then eventually an iMac to do video editing on. It was the greatest thing I could have ever done. I don’t babysit anymore, I simply get things done. Anyone that has ever been caught up in DLL hell would salivate over the way most applications are installed on OSX, a simple drag and drop. In closing my iphone purchase is upcoming as I am done with the terrible phone experiences….just waiting on the contract to expire.

define “alot”
- no Interface builder for now (remember this sdk for iPhone is still in beta stage)
- no OpenGL on the iPhone simulator (You’l need to apply to the 99$ fees, and wait for the firmware 2.0)

I like now that there is an SDK even though that it would not hold me back from an Iphone because I would jailbreak it. Now all I need is 3G. I do not have a smartphone right now mostly because i am disgusted in Microsoft’s poor job with Win mobile. I thank you apple, for the SDK but I need my 3G!!! Oh and 32 GB would be nice.

You got it exactly right. What Apple has developed here is a well integrated, easy to use, easy to expand new mobile & handheld computer platform. They are banging on all gears. This new development platform will also be utilized across numerous devices…most of which we have not even seen yet. This is just the tip of the iceberg. Expandable, scalable, easily deployable, fantastic, economically (code) wise developer tools that will work across multiple devices. After all the ecosystem is all built on OSX.

Hey Chris, have you tried using ZiPhoneOSX to jailbreak your iPhone and add apps? You can do what Apple is offering NOW, and with no risk. The level of ease and speed with which jailbreaking has become a reality are night and day - you can jailbreak a phone in 20 seconds flat with no risk and no additional downloads….

Hey pirillo.com, new subscriber and viewer.
Just as you said iPhone helped me find your site and broadcasts. The phone, and sdk have pushed me over the edge to purchase an iMac. I do have a few questions. Is the sdk going to allow the rotating screen everywhere, or is that something we are stuck waiting for apple for? Also is this going to open up connecting to bluetooth devices, such as headphones for music, and gps receivers for actual gps, as opposed to theis trianglized approzimation.

I absolutely agree with your view of the sdk release. This will allow software developers to truly bring out the power of the iphone. I am a little worried thought. I believe that apple MUST release the iphone 2.0 when the software 2.0 is released. While the iphone is a great machine, it does need some upgrades. I dont think apple will be able to go much longer without upgrading to 3G speeds, and i really hope they also add gps capabilities. I have not really had great success with the triangulation system they currently have implemented.

I love my Nokia N91. Dedicated audio controls, and a 3.5mm jack that’s not too deeply recessed. Oh, and I had it nearly 2 years and still love it!

in response to the above query about the screen rotation, the SDK offers developers all the same APIs Apple developers have access to including the sensors for screen rotation (forgotten the name). So, if you build your application with relevant reference to the API, bingo…
Exciting times!

Well, The iPhone SDK is very important due to the applications people have been asking for. For example, maybe Adobe might make an app that is something like flash, or maybe some good games for people to have fun. Also, jailbreaking your iPhone will soon be pointless because all the jailbreak is is games and some other apps. Well, the iPhone SDK will have that too, Well the jailbreak apps are free……

After dropping my Treo 650 last weekend, I’ve being forced into buying a new phone. With the lackluster phone selection from Tmobile I’m switching to AT&T just to get an iPhone. This video/news is especially encouraging because the main reason I need a pocket pc is to access work email via an Exchange server. So wheee… iPhone here I come.

Well, I would like to see some flash in the iPhone SDK. I think that such a powerful(and big, 8 or 16 GB) does not have flash. Its like a computer not having Microsoft Word. Its just stupid. Also, 3G!! I have wi-fi at my house, but when i have to use Edge, I just die. I had AOL a few years ago, so I know what slow Internet is. EDGE needs to go. Lastly, put some more apps on it. I know I’m getting killed for this, but I think that the iPhone needs some more apps and more in depth apps. For example, weather. It tells you the current temperature, and the next 7 days temperature and how the day will be. Well, some people want more. Like how the pressure is outside, the humitidy, and so on and so forth. Also, a great app would be a sports app. Like having the scores of every game with the touch of your finger
