Why I Hate Salespeople: AT&T Pisses Me Off
Yesterday, I was hoping to find an iPhone 3G (duh). I drove past the local AT&T store a few times and always found quite a line. Decided I’d wait until it died down before going in. “Surely,” I thought. “The Apple Stores would be 100x as busy on a day like today.”
I came back to the AT&T store at 2pm, finding no line at all. The madness must’ve subsided. I traipsed in, thinking there’d still be a few people waiting inside. I was approached by a clerk almost immediately, and I asked the inevitable question. “We’re out, but I can put your name on a list and we’ll order one for you!”
“Nah,” I said. “I’m going to check to see if the Apple Stores have ‘em first.” I should have stopped right there, walked out to my car, and drove away. Instead, I decided to listen to the commission-driven jacka$$ and his presumptive logic.
“By now, all of the stores around town have likely sold out as well.” He had an awkward look on his face, as if he was showing genuine empathy. Unfortunately, his statement seemed plausible enough for me to stop the search and just put my name on the list. I decided to put down the money for two iPhone 3G units (one for me and one for Ponzi), thus cutting off any possibility of getting the phone elsewhere. You can’t cancel this order, my friends. That’s AT&T’s policy, which I do fully understand.
It was my fault for listening to a salesperson. It was my fault for not trusting my own instinct. It was my fault for not looking elsewhere. But why wouldn’t that guy have called around for me, if he was really trying to provide customer service? Why wouldn’t he have suggested I look elsewhere, knowing that I’d have to use AT&T with the iPhone, anyway? Why would I, as a long-standing AT&T customer… nevermind.
Long story short, as of 9pm last night, several local Apple stores still reported having 16g iPhones in stock. I could’ve had one yesterday, or I certainly could have had one today. Instead, I have to wait for an *INDETERMINABLE* amount of time for AT&T to get the phone shipped out to one specific store. That could be a week, that could be two weeks, that could be a month, that could be two months – that could be as long as it takes, and I can’t back out of the deal.
So, here I am… really pissed off at AT&T’s idea of customer service, and REALLY pissed off at myself.

When I had went to my AT&T store they had sold out within the first hour, but the Sales Person suggested that I either try another local store, or go to a larger city and check at the Apple Stores. He also asked if I wanted to place myself on a list, but he wasn’t very pushy about anything.
He did hand me a phone and look it over and I took that chance to compare it to my existing iPhone, but all in all I had no trouble from AT&T when I went to “look”.

Hope you get the phone from AT&T soon. Isn’t it really hard to see all stores full with the iPhones and the one where you ordered, is out of stock?

Customer service is severely lacking in this country nowadays.
Customer loyalty means nothing to the huge corporations running America today.
There are exceptions to the rule. Those unfortunately are becoming rarer every day.

I got EXTREMELY lucky! I got the LAST white 16 GB model (I really wanted black, but oh well) at the AT&T Store. I couldn’t be happier with my experience. Even though we were standing in a line outside in the HOT sun for over 4 and a half hours just to get one, they brought us waters, they were playing music for us… we were actually having fun. I now have 3 iPhones, 2 of which are activated, and a 1st gen that is now either going to my mother, or just gonna sit around the house to use as a Home Automation controller. Either way.. I’m happy I got mine! Wo0o0oT! Now I just need the dock, and a case.

I inherited AT&T service when they bought Cingular.
I have found, that with the AT&T name, some things have changed, while most remain the same. My phone now says AT&T – and that’s about all that has changed. The service here in Nashville, sucked during the changeover. But, their customer service people haven’t ever been the best… Especially in the stores.

Over here in The Netherlands T-Mobile is selling the iPhones. I have to say that my experiences with them haven’t been much better either. I waited in line from 6:30AM until 11AM. I was number 7 in line and although they didn’t have much iPhones I was getting one of the 11 iPhones they did have. Unfortunately T-Mobile’s system completely crashed at stores opening, so it wasn’t possible to activate any phone. They wrote down my name and number and said they’d call me when the system was back up. I dropped by their store at 4:30PM to check how things were going, only to have them tell me my iPhone had been given to someone else. Obviously that pissed me off. They did put me on a “special” list, but I have a feeling that’s just the trash can. Although I still have all my options open, I didn’t get what was promised to me. This doesn’t give me much faith, as a new customer, in T-Mobile.

I would have called the other stores before making any decisions.

It looks to me that the greedy AT&T salesperson did a great injustice. We all know thats their job, but he could of been a little more specific when taking your business.
I’m quite sure he didn’t give you all the details on you not being able to back out of the deal and get your money back.
Surly I’d blame the salesperson on this one.

But salespeople are second only to tele-marketers on my list of scum bags. Tele-marketers abruptly come into my house and disrupt my family and I. It is our decision to walk into the lair of the salespeople!

Yeah, you learned an important lesson for sure. What I do when I go to a store and really want something is to ask them to call a sister store to see if they have any. If the people don’t want to do it at that time, then I leave and go elsewhere anyway. When you do go back, make sure to give the guy, or his supervisor, an earful.

Well my buying experience wasn’t bad. I was in line at 6:20, they opened at 8, I was out and home by 9:10…Then iTunes wouldn’t work.. At 1pm iTunes finally unlocked my phone but I had no service. I called and was told there was a ’service outage that might be resolved in the next one or two days’ well I called back because other people with AT&T had service. This time I got told it was because iTunes hadn’t activated the phone… I didn’t have time to argue and went to work. After looking on the net I saw that AT&T hadn’t even activated the new SIM cards in the phones they sold, so I called and had them check that, amazing it worked! Now they’re saying they won’t credit me because they don’t guarantee service… After the 30 days to keep the hardware, $170 doesn’t look that bad to go back to T-mobile and some decent customer service.

Wish I felt sorry for you, but any fool who feels it’s that necessary to have the iPhone on the day of launch gets what they deserve.
Sure it might be a great phone, (apparently not a great service) but to be so eager to get something on they day of launch is foolish at best.

You’re surprised at AT&T for doing this?!?
This is a company that willfully spies on this nation’s citizens just because a corrupt administration asks it to without producing the lawfully required warrant (”we’re doing what the Administration is asking in a matter of national interest”), then turns around and CEASES wiretaps that HAVE legal warrants because they did not get their check on time. If it was such a matter of national interest for them with the first set of wiretaps, they would have continued the 2nd set without a problem.
No – AT&T are whores who will do anything (ANYTHING) for money. Anybody who does business with them deserves whatever they get. If that happens to be a watermelon sized suppository, then that’s what is deserved.
(But I am surprised, Chris, that you got suckered in by a sales weasel… I guess even the smart ones get taken in occasionally.)

Chris I just wanted to let you know I had the same experience at the AT&T Store. I found out later that the Apple Store had them in stock so I went down there and purchased the 3G IPHONE. So since I paid for the phone at AT&T, I’m going to cancel my purchase and you can too! Here is what you can do. The guy read the policy word to word to me. Once your Iphones come in you go into the store and cancel your purchase. The store has to send them back and once you do that you get your credit back. You dont have to wait to get them if you find your phones elsewhere. You can check apple store online after they close to see if they have them in stock the next day. Hope this helps and the new phone is alot better.

Chris, you mentioned the keyword that defines the success or failure of my career on any given day, and is also the bain of my existence. “Customer service” is a word that has been bastardised so many times by companies just like AT&t and I too am a long time customer with stories
similar to yours. It seems unconcionable how some “*&^%hole” gets away with telling you that and YOU are somehow responsible and on the hook for an indefinite period of time. In my line of work, those comments lead to one thing, and one thing only. A lost client forever in which I’d likely have no way of getting them back, oh, yeah,, I could never hope to get 179.00 early termination of contract fee either.
Cust Serv. should never, ever, ever, by law be allowed to be used by any of the mobile/phone companies, utility co’s, or any business that has any level of a monopoly in any area. The term is simply an oxymoron. In fact that should be the word they are required to use.
Best wishes man, hope you get your phones soon. KW

Chris, you should be able to cancel under a cooling off period or on the basis they can’t give you a firm date. A contract should be fair and as a consumer you have rights!
The Uk had major problems too with low stock and activation issues. I’ve been a customer of O2 here for over 10 years and yet had to get a new contract because the credit check systems failed and wouldn’t return any results for upgrades!

I feel your pain Chris, I really do. I never have been a fan of commission based sales people. I agree they should have called around to see if Apple or other ATT stores had the device. Because of the commission that the sales people are paid you will not find that. The all mighty dollar takes precedence here. ATT should pay their sales people like they do us at the call center. By the hour and commissions on features, not the devices themselves. We only get commission on the features after the customer has them active for a minimum of 3 months. As far as canceling the order. Yes you can. They can’t hold your money hostage if you change your mind. You may have to get a little forceful, but you can cancel the order.

Aw, c’mon. It’s not all that bad as you make it out to be. So you don’t get an iPhone 3G for a few days. Hardly a major disaster. You’d be just wasting fuel driving around in your car. You put you name in and they’ll let you know in a day or two. Okay, so you can’t run out and start flashing your iPhone around. You’ll have to wait just as any number of people have to wait.
In perspective, you’re just being impatient. While you’re waiting you can read to check out iPhone issues, the activation problems should be resolved, the proper firmware updates will be ready and maybe even Mobileme will be straightened out by then. Trust me. There’s really no urgency or need for you to get bent out of shape on this “I don’t have my iPhone yet” issue.

While I understand that you feel pissed isn’t it really your fault for being to lazy to do the research yourself?. Do you honestly think a commision based salesman is going to spead his time searching for you to buy the product somewhere else? Go to BestBuy and try to buy something they have that is out of stock. The saleman isn’t going to call Circuit City for you to check stock. It is your resposibliliy. Apple is a differnt company. You could have left the store waited until 9 PM and check availiblity of all Apple Stores in the country. This is not a new feature. There were lines at Apple Stores right so obviously they had them.

Chris, don’t you know to always listen to your gut. Your gut is never wrong. Whenever I go against my gut, I lose, and I lose big and get really pissed off, at myself. So now, I never do it anymore.
I was an AT&T customer before, and the only thing I didn’t like was the contract issue. I hate being tethered to a long contract, especially with technology.
AT&T’s 3G, is pretty good, but nothing that you can’t live without, I think…. I text, email and write my articles, from my Sidekick, with T-Mobile, which I recently purchased, when my AT&T contract was up…I have the web, and occasionally use it but how much do you go on the web, from the street ? Is it really worth it ? I don’t think you need 3G, with the extra fees. (hey it rhymes)
I heard there’s lots of people hacking the iPhones and going to companies that have no contract >idea.
Either way, hope you get it sooner, than later…I’ll be waiting for your review, after you play with it…
Funny enough I just wrote an article about the hype, last night.

Chris,
The same thing happened to me and my boss when we went into our local att store on friday afternoon. The sales rep gave us the speech about paying for our phones today and how that was the safest bet. He continued to attempt to strike fear and desperation into our hearts and drive his “SALE” by telling us that the store sold out of iPhones in under an hour and that this would be a hard product to come by…
I can understand your frustration, as I dealt with the exact same bullcrap.
I feel that att and apple were in cahoots on delivering short supplies to these stores to drive the hype. This is silly.
I am still looking and have not been able to find a 16gb in black in my market. So, the hunt continues.

I used to be an AT&T subscriber when they first began the change to digital back in ‘99. I got royally shafted by them as well. Cell contracts are finally getting better, but there was a time when your cell bill could easily exceed $500. That was before there was even text or phone internet access.
As a former commision-based salesman, I can relate to the desire to get the sale, but I never once ignored the needs and wants of the customer. I even suggested lesser product to people who were clearly out of their league. BTW, I sold satellite systems back in the big-dish days before digital.
Well, Chris, sorry you got screwed, but the lesson here is as follows: Never trust anyone more than yourself.
Have a great one.

Chris – three things..
1. That sales person only cares about one thing, the sales commission. Screw the customer.
2. If the deposit was with a credit card and you are not comfortable with the transaction, cancel and get your refund. AT&T can’t do anything about it as they have not produced any goods or services. I bet the BBB and FCC would back you on this.
3. Check availability at Apple stores at http://www.apple.com/retail/iphone/availability.html Thanks to Leo for the link.

I have personally convinced myself that any salesman, regardless of his attitude is, in the end, only trying to sell me something and the rest is just an act. But, I also see how it is easy to believe him and just place your order at AT&T, as you would assume that they would be sold out at the Apple Store, especially after hearing about the crazy lines.
It would have been better to just check the availability at the Apple Store before going out to AT&T, or asking them to check for you.

dude, i feel sooo sorry for you. i feel sorry for everyone who had trouble with the new I-Phone. i had a great time getting mine. i got to the AT&T store at around 5:45 AM and waited in line. well around 6:00 AM some people in a white van pulled up and started unloading all kinds of crap. then they started giving away free soda’s and playing live music. i was having so much fun i forgot i was waiting in line! then when i finally got my I-Phone i had no service trouble or anything. everything went smoothly. The funny thing is I’m in Starbucks right now typing this on my new I-Phone. lol! Well sorry everyone who had a bad experience!!!! —Nicholas Cole

That’s the stupidest thing ever. You should walk back in and slap him with the brushed aluminum back on your 1G iphone.

[...] Why I Hate Salespeople: AT&T Pisses Me Off Long story short, as of 9pm last night, several local Apple stores still reported having 16g iPhones in stock. [...]

What logical reason would you have to be pissed. The sales person told you what he could do for you, and you agreed. As far as him calling another store for you, do you know that all the stores compette with each other not only for sales but their livelyhood. Why didn’t you take that 2G iPhone of yours and called apple yourself before you agreed to order it.

YOU GIVE JOURNALISM A BAD NAME. YOU ARE A NARCISSIST OF THE HIGHEST ORDER. YOU ARE THAT WHICH IS TERRIBLE IN AMERICA. YOU ARE DISGUSTING TO ME. YOU HAVE NO EMOTION OTHER THAN YOUR FAKE AND CONTRIVED PERSONALITY WHICH YOU ARE PROCEEDING TO PIMP OUT TO THE WORLD VIA SPAM. YOU ARE SPAM, RECONSTITUTED MEAT. YOU KNOW NO PAIN IN YOUR LIFE. YOU ARE REPULSIVE. YOU ARE ANTISOCIAL. YOU ARE NOTHING BUT POINTLESSNESS AND DISGUSTING SCUM. I HOPE THAT ONE DAY YOU LOOK BACK ON THIS STEAMING CROCK OF BANAL CRINGEWORTHY DRECK WHICH YOU PUT FORTH AND CRINGE YOURSELF TO DEATH. GO GET HIGH. GO GET LAID. GO GET KILLED. FIGHT FOR YOUR LIFE.

Oh, wow! You don’t have the iPhone 3G right when it comes out! Poor you! Get over it. Your 1st gen is fine and will suffice for the time being. Stop complaining, a lot of people don’t even have the chance to get one. Sorry, but truth is, you just sound snobby.

Don’t feel so bad. Even after reading about your bad experience with the AT&T salesman, I was still suckered into buying an iphone from them. Now I am on a waiting list 3 weeks long. :)

as a sales rep for AT&T you were, apparantly, misinformed. You can actually cancel the order as long as it yasntt been shipped. What you couldve actually done was do the preorder then head to any other store to see if they have any iphone’s in stock. If they did, you couldve purchased one at that point and cancel your order.
Sorry you had such a bad experierience.

Man …
AT & T has ** THE DUMBEST *** folks in their stores – there is no question about that. I am surprised they can breathe without assistance.
Is it any wonder they are laying off folks.

…AT&T IS MONSTER….
PROBLEM SINCE FOUR MONTHS…..STILL WAITING FOR MANAGER CALL BACK…RUDE PEOPLE AT&T HAVE WORKING FOR THEM….LOVE TO TAKE MONEY BUT NOT SERVICE IN RETURN….SHOULD HAVE LAW SUIT AGAINT THEM….TOLD ME THAT I AM DOING A FRAGRANT ACTIVIES…BUT TIS OK FOR THEM TO USE MY BROTHER’S INFO. AND OPEN AN ACCOUNT UNDER HIS NAME WITHOUT HIS PERMISSION TO DO SO……WOW….I CANT BELIEVE THE WORLD WE LIVE IT
Hello everyone, I am so happy that I found a place where I can leave my info about at&t and their service. If I had my ways I would never get a service from them. “LET ME KNOW IF I TOPE ANY ONE ELSE EXPERIANCE…..” here is my story. So, my parents can’t speak well English…so usually I would be the one giving 100 calls to att. So than, my parents decides to move to one apt to another. My brother called att to see if any are able to transfer the service to new place and if there is going to be any charge. Well they said they can transfer the service and they will be not charge. YA RITE LIKE THEY DO ANY FREE OF CHARGE. We believed them. BIG MISTAKE. They charged us for it big time. The transfer fee is more than installation fee. I called to see what in hell is going on. Well I was advice by them that they do not see a note from when my brother calls to verify such info. There for they can not do anything about it. And so I had to pay the money I was so mad, told him this is just wrong. I spend 3 hours with him arguing. I told me the only reason I have the danm land line is that I need the internet. Well at that time he told me that they have service call “Direct Loop”(I think). As long as I have an other product with att. Which is just the internet does not require a phone line and it’s also $25 a month. I was and I end yup paying the bill in full which I should have not. Well he set me up for the account, told it will be starting from this date. Well two weeks after that we got a letter in mail saying they don’t have that service available at are place there for they cant offer us that service. So that I was like ok fine F**k it…that month we got two bills in are mail. One for the $25 and one for the internet and phone line. I was like what the f**k is going on. Oh and byw the $25 account was opened under my brothers name and ssn, who ever called att to open an account with them.
So than i called them again…i am like what the f**k your going one side u say we don’t have a such service and u go head and charge us for it. Well they are like well talk to are tech serv. people. I did that I was told that the $25 service was running to are place from sep 25. I was like than why in hell u send us letter saying we don’t have the service. They are like just pay this $25 and don’t worry about the other bill. BIG MISTAKE AGAIN…(spoke with 8 people 3 and half hours)
Got two bills again from them one for $25 and one with late charges on it which they told me not to pay. I called again…got mad at the person I was speaking too…transfer me to manger (only mgnr I was able to speak to) told me not to pay the bill and will send a letter in mail which say I have no balance to do. I was like OK….
I also did not tell me the $25 is under my brother who is not 18 nor did he call to open an account with you. Advice me to have him call and change the name on account and there will be no charge to do so. I had my brother call them. They say in order for them do change the name they have to cancel the account and open one under my mom. At that time this person informs my brother that the $25 service is not available at my place. “COME ON…..U THINK WE’RE SUTPID…JUST IN MIN THE SERVICE IS NOT THERE….: o……” well they end up give us a service with phone line and internet…which I did not want to it. The only thing we want it was name change. Since the nov. 18 my brother is trying to get the internet running. It has not happened.
We’re give a date when the internet should be working at are place. The date came my brother try to run the internet….GUESS WHAT…:O….IT DOES NOT WORK….BIG SUPRISE….MAN…so he called to there tech. people who does not care whose on acc. and whose calling…my brother told them the problem they told him it will be ruing next wed….the wed. came…it was not run. Called again was told this Friday. Called them again…told us call us on this day at 8:00pm at nite…it will be running…did not happened…they continued til dec. 12…I got mad….
Told them what kind of shit and what kind f**k bus. They are running… (Also protented to be my mom cuz she was the one on acc.)..Give all the info they need it and she told me the internet is running but they are having some problem with phone line that is not working…”NOW TELL ME IF THE PHONE LINE IS NOT WORKING HOW COME THE INTERNET IS WORK???????????????????” SOME TIME I THINK THEY THINK WE’RE STUPID AND DONT KNOW WHATS GOING ON…..she told me her computer system say its working…I told if it was working. I would have not been making this call. she is like yes mam ur rite…and this and that….I also asked her how come we don’t have the $25 internet service anymore…she was like cuz its not available at ur place…I told her I was using it for last month and half…how come suddenly its not available at the time my brother called to change the name on acc.? She was like oh I don’t know…I don’t see any of that notes in ur acc.
So I asked her u don’t see a note in this acc. when my brother called to change the name and that…entire she was like not…I was like then who did u cancelled the acc. and open a new one????????? She was like….um…ahhhh…I don’t know. I asked her I want to speak to a manger…she would not let me…nor would she let me transfer…she was like I can put a request when the manger will give a call in 24 to 48 hours…I told her she could do that but I want a manger now…she was like well they all are gone for today…which is 5pm central time….she transfer me to one more person who would not listen to me…and hug up on me….SUCH A NICE CUS. SER…..WHICH THEY BRAGE ABOUT IT…..
So that was last Friday dec. 12 this is today Friday dec. 19 still waiting for a call from manger….
so than I called again was speaking with a person…I told her as soon as I got her that I want to manger cuz I am waiting for their call from a week now…she was like what is the phone # who am I speaking to…I told her I am not giving that info to her but to a manger…she got rude and hug up on me…than I called tech. sup. people…the call went to over sea…I told the person sorry but I need a manager…and I got one…but was not helpful…THE PEOPLE WHO SAYS THAT I CALLED AND THE CALLED WENT TO OVER SEA AND I WAS NOT HAPPY…WELL…ATLIST WHEN U ASK FOR MANAGE U GET ONE…AND THEY ARE NICE AND THEY LISTEN TO U…AND TRY TO HELP U…” the people over here…are rude and would not let to finish whatever u have to say…AND WILL NEVER TRANSFER YOU TO A MANAGER…THAT WOULD BE A DREAM….AND WILL LAUGH AT U…” spoke with a person for hours and never got a manager had to leave my info. So they could call me back…and they will not call me today. will have to waiting for 24 to 48 hours….I don’t know who they think they are….”I THINK CUSTOMER MEANS NOTHING TO THEM….I WISH THE COMPANY WILL BE BANKRUPT…SOON….” they can take urn money but will not provide good cus. ser. they will tell u that if u don’t act rite with them ur not getting any thing do or they will mass with ur acc. more…”STILL WAITING FOR MANAGER CALL…I have never seen such a bad cus. ser……att tops it….

AT&Ts pricing just illustrates what crooks they are. All of their plans are BAD VALUE TO THE CONSUMER. When I called to express concern, the sales rep laughed at me and told me I was crazy if I thought what I thought. He even went so far as to say that not one person has called in with the same concern and I’m the first and only person who feels that way. I told him thank you, hung up, called the Better Business Bureau, reported AT&T and then cancelled my account. I couldn’t be happier being back at Verizon.
