Why Can’t I Talk in the Chat Room?

http://live.pirillo.com/ – While recording a video earlier, a chatter emailed me to ask why his messages wouldn’t appear in the chat room, and what the problem is. Well… it’s not a problem. It’s a feature we’ve had to enact.
Wicket is a good doggie. He behaves himself, so he is always voiced in the chat room at live.pirillo.com . When we record videos, we found that people would come into the chat room and cause problems. They would say inappropriate things, spam inappropriate links, or just misbehave in a way that made me have to record over. This got to be a huge waste of time. We now moderate the channel during video recording, and any time we have a spammer or anything that gets out of control.
What is moderation? Simple… enabling channel moderation means that no one without a voice (+), halfop (%), or full op (@) can chat. You can type in your client, but your messages will not show up in the channel. How can you get voiced? It’s easy, really. BEHAVE . Watch your language, be courteous and follow the channel rules.
I don’t have many channel rules. They are:
- No repeating yourself. We see your question/comment. No one (including me) may have the answer right then, or have the time to answer. We will when and if we can!
- Don’t post links! Tiny url links will earn you an automatic kick. Posting links to your youtube, myspace, etc can and will be considered spam. You can post links that are relevant to a conversation, such as a tutorial or help topic.
- Turn off the caps lock! This is considered shouting, as most of you know. Talking in all caps will not get you noticed or answered faster. Quite the opposite will happen… you’ll probably get ignored by your fellow chatters, and / or kicked from the channel for repeated abuse.
- Be NICE. Don’t be abusive or rude to other chatters. If you have a problem or disagreement with someone, that is fine. Handle yourself in an adult, civilized manner. Don’t attack anyone.
- Explicit language is a no-no You know what this means. No profanity, nothing sexual, no racial slurs.
- Don’t spam the bots Don’t constantly set off bot triggers, such as !rules, !register, etc. Only use them as needed. They usually trigger themselves anyway on certain keywords. When a user says “How can I register my nick?” you don’t need to do !register. The bot will pick up on it already.
Also, you should make sure you become familiar with the WyldRyde Rules as well. WyldRyde is the IRC network that hosts our live chat, and they have their own rules that must be followed in order to remain on the network. Before you ask… yes, the Constitution guarantees you the Freedom of Speech. However… WyldRyde is a private organization, and private organizations are allowed to set their own rules and standards.
You also need to make sure your nickname is registered on WyldRyde. To do this:
To register your nick type /ns register password email. Replace “password” with a unique password that you can remember and “email” with your email address. Once you have registered your nick name you will need to identify yourself every time you login to the server. To do this type, “/ns IDENTIFY password” and hit enter. If you use an IRC client, you can configure it to identify you automatically when you connect.
Last but not least, here is how you can get a Voice in the channel… and keep it!
- Contribute with meaningful and intelligent conversation when the channel is not moderated.
- DON’T personally attack others, flood the channel, talk in caps, use sexually explicit language, post useless links, abuse the bots, or argue with the ops.
- Be responsible. If someone in the channel is breaking the rules, don’t encourage them. Ignore them, let the ops deal with them, and try to help steer the conversation back on topic.
- Have a registered nick.
- DON’T ASK FOR VOICE!
And there you have it… why you cannot chat during recording, and how you can become a voiced, trusted chatter!

I honestly think that moderating channels is the way to go. I do so in my private channels, mostly because I got tired of the stuff that people would say about others and it was easier to just make the person what was causing problems be quiet, than trying to solve a fight.
I know a lot of people who think that private channels shouldn’t be moderated because it’s well. . “taking away my right to freedom of speech” Honestly, the internet is not america. the entire world uses it, and many of the people who use the private channels aren’t in the United states, and thus the bill of rights doesn’t apply. :)

i agree with this the person who emailed you, i get annoyed when its put onto voice only and i want to ask a question and i have to wait a while for my question to be answered, but its very understandable for the reasons of voice only so good stuff chris.

this is a good idea due to a lot of people spamming or but i am not always chating just reading and watching so i don’t get noticed much. but i do see rude people at times and in this case the good out does the bad..

Hey I just had an Idea… why not make a separate channel like #chris2 or something (I’m no good with names) but one that doesn’t get posted to the video feed but regular users can still talk amongst themselves about the video. Granted this may not be the best option since all the uStream users won’t be in that channel, but it’s just an idea.
It’s up to you to perfect or toss in the garbage.
Anyways thanks for the awesome… EVERYTHING! I just found your live feed two days ago and have found everyone very awesome and welcoming. I hope to be a long time viewer.

I like to chat, but I can’t! I guess if you are recording videos, it would be understandable… But how can I ever participate if it seems that you moderate it if you don’t even have videos recorded? I love the moderation. Yeah, it sucks to sit out on the videos if you don’t have voice, but it is normally more enjoyable for those who don’t, as well as those who do since there is no spam. If you really want voice, just follow the rules, contribute, and have fun.

I really enjoy this interactive experience on mIRC. Yo have taken it to another level completely. It is very refreshing for a long time IRC fan. you must have moderated channels or chaos will happen it is just the way it is.

This is such a good idea. It’s the worst when you have to re-record a 15 minute video! So many people in the chat rooms are often rude to one another, or use inappropriate language. Whoever invented moderation, they are a genius!

I think the chat is gr8 but the moderators are just to power crazy with kicking ppl. Once again i have been kicked from chat for a reason unknown to myself aparentley it is against the rules to write censored???? i mean what the f**k I DIDNT SWEAR I SAID CENSORED AND GOT KICKED????? get some decent moderators preferably not ones that wear nazi uniforms at the weakend

i got banned once just for nicely and respectfully asking what i did to get the mods in such a tizzy and all mad. and one said dont question me and banned me. i just said i wanna know what i did wrong so i wont do it again. then the other mods were heckling me. i tried to ask what i did wrong a couple times and one said if you dont like it you can leave.
I dont like getting heckled by moderators and abused by their imperialistic attitude. Of i dont have to tell you what you did. Just asking what did i do is being disrespectful. And if you dont like it leave. It doesnt give me the warm fuzzies when im treated this way.
Please Please Please dont take this as hate mail. I love your show chris…. i just think sometimes the mods sometimes misunderstand peoples intentions in some circumstances.were all human ya know.
