Sure, technology is the harbinger of change, but creation of the new always leaves a wake of destruction in its path. Progress is supposed to be — and I think it generally is — a good thing, but there’s always going to be a period of adjustment as society figures out what to do with the old as it takes in the new. Sometimes the old doesn’t see the writing on the wall and can’t quite make the proper adaptations in time to remain relevant.
If the old guard can wake up in time to see how technology can be its ally instead of its enemy, then beautiful things can happen. Sadly, this isn’t the initial reaction of most industries finding themselves being forced to make changes. By the time panic takes hold, it’s often already too late and someone else with a little more foresight is on hand to pick up the pieces and run with them.
