Where Would you go in Brazil?

Victor is a community member who happens to be from the gorgeous country of Brazil. Brazil is a large tourist area, and there are just some places you shouldn’t visit on your trip. Here are Victor’s recommendations for places to stay away from.

  • Amazonia Don’t visit Amazonia. There is nothing there but wood and Columbian drug dealers. You’ll be lucky if you don’t get “caught” by the FARCs that usually hang around near the border. It doesn’t matter if you aren’t doing anything. They will arrest you and question you anyway.
  • Salvador It doesn’t matter what people tell you. This city is nothing but a giant bathroom. I don’t know why this is, but the residents of this city truly use anywhere they see fit outdoors as their personal restroom. It is disgusting, smelly and unsanitary.
  • Fernando de Noronha This is a beautiful place, for sure. It’s definitely nice to visit IF you don’t mind having a Forest Agent following you all day. This would include when you are at the beach, having lunch, and even going to a restroom! You can’t blame them… it’s their job. Still, it’s a pain and a serious damper on your vacation.
  • Sao Paulo It hurts me to say this, because I live in Sao Paulo. Picture this, though: imagine New York City with more traffic and a lot more criminals. Also, change the “Italian Mafia” for the Yakusa… and you have my home town.
  • Rio de Janeiro Yes, I said it. You don’t want to visit Rio de Janeiro, unless you enjoy getting shot at, mugged or becoming violently ill. Sure, it’s ‘beautiful’. It’s not so beautiful when you are lying in a hospital instead of enjoying the sights.

For the record, there are nice places to go in all of the above cities. I wouldn’t advise anyone who doesn’t know the places extremely well to try their luck there on a first vacation. If you would like to visit Brazil, try Florianopolis. It’s beautiful, it’s warm weather, and there are tons of young people about.

POST UPDATE
After this video was finished, Jaoa wrote in to say that he, also, is from Brazil. He wanted to send us a list of places you should visit if you ever travel to Brazil.

  • Amazonia this is the largest rainforest in the world, and the one with the most biodiversity. Part of its territory is in Brazil. It’s one of the most beautiful places in Brazil. Unfortunately, there is a lot of deforestation occuring, due to little fiscalization. The only way to stop the deforestation is to promote sustainable tourism. Please, if you can… visit Amazonia. It will be a unique and unforgettable experience. You won’t be shot when visiting Amazonia. FARCs are not from Brazil, they’re from Columbia. The person above must have been joking.
  • Salvador This is a beautiful city with a lot of tourist spots. Some strees have architecture from the Colonialism period. The people are wonderful, and the food is delicious. Salvador has a lot of African culture, as well.
  • Fernando de Noronha This is an island on the Brazilian coast. It’s a preserved area, where people survive via tourism, without being prejudicial to the environment. It’s a government reserve. It’s a wonderful place, and very worthy of a visit.
  • Sao Paulo This is our economical center, and is the largest city in South America. It’s a beautiful place, with many different cultures. There is violence, but it’s mainly due to the economical contrasts amongst its inhabitants… much like with New York City. There is no “mafia”, as stated above. The violence is concentrated to the poor areas of the city.
  • Rio de Janeiro This is the most known place in Brazil, due to the Carnaval, and soccer. Brazil isn’t only about those things, though. This is the second largest city in Brazil. There are many sights to see. It’s the most beautiful city in the country, by far. The last Pan American Games happened here!

The greatest/grandest waterfall in the world in on the Brazil Argentina border. By all means visit Iguazu falls. The falls are not spoiled, the scenery is magnificent, the area seems safe, the natives are friendly. Don’t miss it. For me, the greatest disappointment in visiting Brazil was Rio. It was not a glorious colorful Samba place. It was gray, run down, and crime ridden. Avoid it, and look longingly at pictures of the place from 30 years ago.

Manaus is also a nice city to visit.

I’ve been to Sao Paolo and Rio and I agree that Sao Paolo is not a good place to visit. And while you shouldn’t go to Rio because of all the aforementioned problems, you really have to go there. Stay travelsmart and its a great place. Then go to Argentina.

Rio de Janerio is surely an excellent place to visit.

I spent ten days in Rio de Janeiro over the Easter holiday on the Copacobana Beach and had a wonderful time as my first visit to Brazil. I experienced no shootings, muggings or illness. I felt safe wherever I went in the daytime or night and never felt threatened at all. The people whom I interacted with were very cordial and polite. I would love to go back again if the opportunity shoud arise.

Don’t like Salvador? ARE YOU NUTS?!!!!! Salvador (Bahia) is magnificent, it’s simply an amazing place with amazing people. As they say there, “Sorria, voce esta na Bahia” (smile, you’re in Bahia)(my Portuguese is horrible now, so I might not have written that completely correctly). The point is, though: I love Brazil, it’s a fantastic country, and Bahia is my absolute favourite place of all there. Go there, live it and see for yourself. I almost get teary eyed just thinking about it.

They deleted my comment, they think i was joking.
I’m São Paulo, and i was not joking about live CS and woman that love ***.

Fortaleza Brasil!
My son is going there this summer. We are biased because we have a Brasilain son from there. We had an exchange student two years ago. I cannot wait till I get to go there.

I am Brazilian and right now I am living in Bangkok. I have lived in Berlin, Buffalo-NY, Chile and have been to many places. I cannot believe I read such a stupid thing about Brazil. I DO KNOW Brazil have many issues but the way it is described here is the most stupid I could imagine in my lifetime. All places I have been have problems and Brazil just has different problems and is still a wonderful place to visit. That is the reason why I am moving back there. It is a beautiful place with cheerful people. The person who wrote it does not know anything about Brazil. For instance, FARC (fuerzas revolucionarias colombianas) is a COLOMBIAN terrorist group, no wonder its name is written in SPANISH while people speak Portuguese in Brazil.

lebanese living in canada….

Recently returned from a wonderful South American vacation which included the Argentine and Brazilian sides of Iguazu Falls, an amazing place. I’m sure that there are places unsafe for individual travelers in the areas Victor mentions, but ruling out Rio, Amazonia, and Sao Paolo entirely (I don’t know the other areas) would mean missing some outstanding travel experiences. There are places I wouldn’t go alone after dark in most large cities in the USA, but with a bit of research and common sense, I can still see most places in those cities. Travelers who are seriously apprehensive can still go to Victor’s no-nos as part of a safe organized tour. Victor sounds a bit paranoid.

Mexico city and i live in las vegas

California, US.

Espirito Santos, Brazil

Denver/from Iowa and I have been to places were I did not belong before along with the help of a guide. I think that if you focus on yourself and don’t look at anyone you can survive a for a few days on your own without a guide. I could care less about this subject because human life is temporary and I could care less about why people should be afraid of other people. I have more love for nature than humans.
