Where is Microsoft Headed Now?

Microsoft’s been through a lot of changes over the years, but 2014’s been, as the learned, academic types say, “a doozy.” New Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently said that the tech industry “does not respect tradition — it only respects innovation… in order to accelerate our innovation, we must rediscover our soul,” and not long after, the company announced projected layoffs ahead that will tally up to somewhere in the 18,000 range.

18,000 souls out of jobs does seem like a rediscovery, of sorts, but we shouldn’t be so quick to jump on the new guy as a scapegoat just yet. Some would say that Nadella’s challenges ahead were paved with mistakes made on previous CEO Steve Ballmer’s watch (like the company’s $7.2 billion buyout of Nokia), and this is simply the most obvious course correction that Microsoft has at its disposal right now…
