It seems that a lot of us tech-bloggers are getting very concerned about the more "important" stuff going on right now. I actually wrestled with the same thing as you--my audience found me because of my tech posts, but it's kinda hard to care about a new social network when you see the nation crumbling around you. Similar to you I decided it is what it is, I care too much about the country to care about my Technorati rankings, I think we all have to do our part in our own little way. Oh yeah, Go Ron Paul! ;)

Just found your blog Chris, great stuff. So drastic in fact that those of us who love tech so very much are actually being taken away from that focus in our minds because of the glaring atrocities now inherent in our government that is preventing us from staying in our "own little tech thirsty world."Things are literally getting so bad, based on a gradual ramping up of corruption since the modern industrial age began, that for those of us who are high intellectuals usually lost in our own world, social outcasts, nerds, geeks, natural free thinking imagineers (hey it's our job); are being taking out of our techzone forcefully and made to finally say something.Frankly, I think it would be us who has the strength to actually make a difference when the very problem with most others is that they have been nearly brainwashed by the time they have wasted with the Boob-tube and shallow 2 dimensional main stream media reporting. Two things with that. #1. One might say a lot of us are too smart for that and could see right through any of it. I tend to take the more humble approach and go for number 2 though. #2. those of us that have been very deep in geekdom haven't had nearly as much time for chance of brainwashing because we are too busy on the pc, lab, or datacenter to pay attention. So the indoctrination over time just isn't there. I haven't had a TV for 3 years. Only download the episodes I want to watch. If I have time. Before then I was too busy building businesses on the internet to watch TV even when I had it.So now when things are finally stepping on our toes enough to keep us from moving forward, more and more of our "species" in the human race are turning slightly from the insatiable thirst for more and new tech and trying to fight off the dragon that is breathing down our necks.Something has to happen. There is a virus that has become more than infectiuos and WE ARE the cure.

Indeed it is drastic times. Because so many eyes are looking at the code security weaknesses and coding errors (bugs) are discovered and patched quickly, greatly reducing the possibility of exploitation. These two reasons are enough for me, but I have one more: The concept of Open Source Software is about freedom and the sharing of ideas. We call our country the Land of the Free. Our Constitution was originally written to define and protect that freedom. It seems to me that the software used to facilitate our execution of our most important freedom (our vote) should be developed in an environment of freedom, not in some secret back room hidden from the light of day.

We (the voting public) should write our representatives informing them that we want the voting software used to count our votes to be developed as an Open Source Project, and here is my reasoning: Open Source Software has a million eyes looking at the code so it will be difficult for anyone to get by with anything shady. Drastic times call for drastic measures and I'm glad your voicing your opinions and trying to open the eyes of some of your readers. It's really sad times when only about 30% of the population supports their president, something needs to change.

I haven’t been reading your blog in a while and I must say it’s gotten a lot more politically focused.
