What’s up with all these Shootings!?
I just received breaking news from CNN about something that just happened at CNN:
A man shot a woman today at CNN Center complex. A witness who is a CNN employee saw a male shoot a black female twice at the Omni hotel, which is part of CNN Center.
And yesterday, right here in Seattle - UW staffer killed by stalker:
The woman shot dead on the campus of the University of Washington this morning had a protection order against the man who shot her and then himself in what police are saying was an apparent murder-suicide.
Oh, but here’s another bloody tale:
An Ocala man is in the Marion County jail, accused of shooting his mother in the head. Officers found 51-year-old Carolyn Cheuvront’s body Monday afternoon inside her home on 17th Avenue in Ocala. Investigators have not released a motive for the murder.
And the kids are getting in on the act, too:
An 18-year-old man has been charged with murder over the shooting death of another teenager near Bunbury, in Western Australia’s south. Lawrence William Dix, 19, from Bunbury was shot dead at his family’s home at Dalyellup, a suburb of Bunbury, at about 6.30pm (WST) on Sunday.
Don’t break my heart. My achy-breaky heart:
Police have issued arrest warrants for country singer Billy Joe Shaver after he shot and wounded a man outside a Texas bar, the entertainer’s attorney said. After Shaver left a bar in Lorena on Saturday night, a drunk, aggressive stranger with a knife followed him into the parking lot, said attorney Joseph A. Turner of Austin. Shaver shot him in self-defense, he said.
Let’s turn to the Sports section:
A man accused of shooting Aliquippa High School basketball star Herb Pope after a party surrendered to police early Tuesday. Marcus Longmire, 19, of Pittsburgh, surrendered at the Beaver County Jail on charges of attempted homicide, aggravated assault, simple assault and a firearms violation in the shooting early Saturday.
Statistically speaking, if I walk downstairs and tell Ponzi that I’m not going to finish the laundry, there’s a 1 in 1,000 chance she’s going to shoot me. Of course, I’m more likely to get shot in the arm than the face (leaving me with one good arm to reload the dryer). The problem is: it’s just not as easy as it could (or should) be to acquire weapons of mass delusion.

On a more serious note - when will the US realize that the only way to stop this is absolute gun control? The historic right to bear arms and protect yourself against the government expired 198 years ago… Link to What’s up with all these Shootings!? ~ Chris Pirillo

Criminals = people who don’t follow the law.
Gun control = law.
More gun control = worthless.

Yeesh Chris - prepared to give up bathing, or driving? Statistically, both are far more dangerous. Ever heard of “If it bleeds, it leads” ?

These shootings are simply part of the national statistics on shootings. The last statistics for firearms deaths I was able to find were from 2003 and show that 16,907 deaths were suicides by firearm with 11,920 assaults by firearms in this country and 730 accidental firearms discharches resulting in death. If you look at just the assaults, that works out to be a little over 32 assaults with deaths by firearms/day.
Putting that in perspective though, there were 44,757 deaths from motor vehicle accidents, 19, 457 deaths from poisonings and 17,229 deaths from falls.
Stats obtained here:

I prefer to be shot than set on fire. But that’s me. Or should we also outlaw matches?

Since there was a little bit of humor above trying to make the very serious subject a little bit lighter. I’ll add this. If you purchase a Fisher Paykel top load dryer you will be able to achieve the task with one functioning arm just fine.

What gun control means to me is; holding the gun steady with both hands!
The Chinese have been using gun powder for over 1,000 years. Guns defiantly have swayed power throughout history; those who have guns and those that don’t (i.e. Cortez vs. Aztec). This is not the problem, PEOPLE are the problem! Or in fact Society is the problem. Tooo many people…guns kill people… lowering the population… guns are good! This goes on and on…any body wanta argue with me? Oh ya? Well, I’m packing! J/K
Think about it.

Maybe it has something to do with having the US gun toting society…

You seem to be a little preoccupied with firearms lately. Others have and will say; it’s the nature of “news” to report the bad and ignore the good, there are many other “real” dangers you pay little attention to yet face every day, considering the vast number of firearms out there the number of incidents involving them is inexplicably low, etc. If this keeps up I might have to move your blog from my “Tech Blogs” favorites folder to “Political blogs.” ;)
