Chris,
I just sent in everything that was in my PayPal account.
While I think Doc could get his own powerbook as he is much better off financial than I am (as is most of the world – I am worth more dead than alive right now…that sucks,) I have enjoyed Doc's comments on his blog and thought it might be a nice gesture.
Unfortunatly it looks like most of your blog readers have no idea who Doc is :(
Well, I wish I could have given more than I did.

What can be worse than the hardware being stolen is your personal data. With luck, he had the laptop “secured” and practiced regular data backup.
I feel for the guy, but can't cough up the extra cash. Too many addictions of my own to feed, for one. I'd think he had insurance on it, everyone knowing how popular these are with sticky-finger types. In the wild, you practically need your laptop chained to your wrist. Hope it works out for him.

No one is being asked to max out a credit card, just pitch in a couple bucks if they support Doc. Have you ever even taken the time to read his Web site or watch him speak? The guy is phenominal and very down to Earth. He is one of the nicest speakers I have ever had the pleasure to work with. I didn't mean that you couldn't post a comment, I am simply pointing out that no one is holding a gun to your head to do this. There is a difference between kissing ass and supporting a good idea. I wish I would have come up with this idea but then again, I don't think it would even come close to suceeding on my site. Also I'm not asking anyone to kiss Chris' ass nor am I saying you shouldn't comment. All I was doing was giving a second point of view and stirring the thought process but it has obviously fallen on deaf ears.

If any blogger is under the misguided notion that commenters are required to kiss the author's ass, then you're sorely mistaken. If I agree, I'll agree. If I disagree, I'll disagree. While I agree with almost everyone here, let me voice a couple points.
First, to a geek having no computer can be worse than no food. Been there, choose CDRs over food… it's called college.
As for people expressing their voice and not having a computer. Well it's called a library and they almost all have public access terminals and Blogger accounts are available for free.
As for other people needing the almost $3000. Well then donate a buck or two to them in support. There is no one holding a gun to your head to give here. Chris is just asking that people who have gotten anything from Doc's newsletter try to show him some support but helping him out. Even if he gets insurance money out of this then Doc still deserves the money because he does a lot of work that he rarely asks anything for. I say if you have gotten anything from his blog then what is the problem with throwing him a couple bucks in support whether it is for a laptop or not. Heck, I'll through Doc a couple dollars just to say “thanks, have a big mac on me.”
Sure there are a lot of people out there that need help but this a friend of Chris' and he just thought that some of Doc's other friends and readers may want to help the man out. Don't piss in someone's Cheerios for trying to help a friend. If you are worried about other out there then head down to a shelter and spend a weekend helping out. Acts of kindness are good regardless of whether you feel the person deserves it or not. The person who wants to share their generousity should only have to answer to their concious and you answer to yours. Feel free to cast a stone if you wish but look to yourself first and see if you ever organized a birthday for a friend but didn't bother to say hi to a homeless person on the street. Though a different situation they have vague simularities.

I have been in a Jam before and needed a helping hand and no one gave it when some could. But At least now I am in a position to help and dont mind throwing a buck or two his way. If he doesnt need it then Chris can donate the cash to a worthwhile charity.

I agree with most here. I don't think Doc needs the help in buying a new computer. He probably has insurance to cover it anyway. Either way, don't think he needs the money as bad as some guy who is dying to blog and have their voice heard but has NO computer.
