What to Do with Old Electronics

My ol’ real estate agent friend (Stan Mackey) sent another list of tips to my inbox on Sunday. This isn’t quite a comprehensive list, but it’s at least a starting point. Bottom line: don’t throw old electronic components in the trash. They can be recycled in other ways:

  • Have a garage sale. Advertise your sale in a local newspaper. Make sure to include your address and what time and days the sale will take place. Post directional signs at nearby key intersections. Put price tags on everything, but be flexible and ready to negotiate.

  • Donate household items and clothes to a local charity. Call first to see if it will accept larger items such as refrigerators or couches. Obtain a receipt for your tax records.
  • Recycle or donate electronic equipment to reduce the environmental impact of electronics disposal. Recycle TVs and monitors, computers, audio/video equipment, fax machines, and cell phones.

I must give Steve Jobs props for making a much more environmentally friendly iMac - though I’m really not one for glossy screens.

Craigslist your old electronics. At the very least, your old iMac can be used as a boat anchor. Hows that for recycling?

Another option is Freecycle: http://www.freecycle.org/

This is a (series of) mailing lists of people giving away stuff, and other people taking the stuff people are giving away.

If you have an old TV that works, consider donating it to a retirement home.
