What Kind of Food do They Eat in Scotland?

I’ve never been to the UK, but I’ve always wanted to go. Heck, I’d love to visit Ireland and Scotland as well. I got an email the other day that I thought would be fun to make into a video. I get emails from all over the world. I really love hearing about your countries, and even the favorite foods of your locale. So Neil sent me an email with the top five meals in Scotland for me to share with you.
- Haggis, Neeps and Tatties. Ever heard of this? Didn’t think so. This is his favorite meal. Haggis is not exactly the best-sounding food. It’s sheep heart, lungs and liver all mixed up and served in a sheep’s stomach. It’s YUMMY, trust me. Neeps are a watery vegetable with a sweetness to it. Tatties are potatoes, usually mashed.
- Full Scottish breakfast. I don’t tend to eat this every morning, as it can be unhealthy. It consists of Black pudding (which contains oatmeal and pig or cow blood), baked beans, eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns and fried tomatoes.
- Stovies. Stovies is traditionally a left over dish from the Sunday Roast, using the tatties, meat and dripping leftovers all thrown into one pot. Meat used varies from chicken, beef and lamb.
- Scottish steak. This is more of a worldwide dish. It has to be angus beef, fried with onions and tomatoe, and a pepper sauce.
- Fish supper. This is really a carry-out meal. It consists of Haddock deep fried in batter with chips. Scottish people prefer this to things like hamburgers.
Send me an email to tell me about the favorite foods and meals from your country! I’d love to hear about it.

Chris,
Haggis doesn’t taste like it sounds. Very nice indeed. Neeps are Turnips, which is a root vegetable - a bit like a Carrot, I guess. “Full Scottish” is pretty much the same as a “Full English”. Fish supper is just a Scottish name for “Fish and Chips” pretty much.
Scotland rocks though, especially the more northern parts like the Speyside area and Inverness. Very nice landscape.

Just to clarify, I am from the United Kingdom and I do believe that this person has misinformed you in two areas. The breakfast is the same as an English Breakfast (originated in England in the Industrial Revolution) but without the horrible addition of Black Pudding. Also the “Fish supper” is not the usual name, mainly for scotland. But if you do visit the UK just call it Fish & Chips because thats its more widely known name (Chips are Fries by the way, for American readers. Its is a British thing as it is very popular in England, Wales , Nothern Ireland, Republic of Ireland and indeed Scotland, not just a scottish meal as this person is making it out to be. The first fish & chip shop in the UK was in Oldham, Greater Manchester which is in England lol!

I’m thinking about the UK for college (did I spell that right, shows my intelegence) as I hear it’s some what cheaper then here in the US (+ free health care :-)). I think some of that stuff doesn’t sound that bad, okay… If I hadn’t just waken up I’d probably be trying to find some one who could make it. Sadly, I don’t know of any Scottish restaurants around here.

Once you have your Haggis, Neeps & Tatties for yer dinner you have to wash them down with a dram o’scotch with water - half and half - or half pint o’heavy :D
PS. Black pudding for breakfast rules!

Umm…
Neeps is turnip.
And tatties is better pronounced with an “Ah” sound.
And haggis has like oats in it. And It tastes a million times better than it sounds.
You should try black pudding (it’s called blood pudding in England but the correct term is black pudding), its awesome with fried eggs and tattie scones.
Other than that.. A fish supper or a sausage supper, or a scotch pie supper fae the chippy.
Or if your brave enough a deep fried mars bar.

“I’ve never been to the UK, but I’ve always wanted to go. Heck, I’d love to visit Ireland and Scotland as well.”
Just a tiny thing there pal, Scotland is in the UK….
ignorance will get you no where.
and also, a “Full Scottish” consists of sausage, yes, but square, Lorne Sausage. If you get handed a link sausage you’ve got it wrong! and they aren’t that unheathly! grill your sausage, bacon and black pudding (YUMMMMMMMMMM!), scramble your eggs and you’ll be fine!
