What is Your Favorite Kind of Peanut Butter?

I’m a peanut butter fanboi according to Ponzi. I’ll eat it right off of a spoon. She went shopping and wanted to buy some more. At the store, she noticed that there was one brand who claimed to be the best tasting. So, she decided to make me do a peanut butter taste test. My rules were that I had to rate each brand on creaminess, how much it tasted like actual peanuts, and overall taste.

First, I had to start off by tasting actual nuts. The first kind was Planter’s Honey Roasted peanuts. She had Blue Diamond almonds, flavored with soy and wasabi. Then, lastly, she had some Blue Diamond Lime and Chili almonds. I guessed the peanut flavor right off the bat. With the lime and chili almonds, it took me a minute to figure out the lime part. I guessed pepper and jalapeno, but never got around to chili. On the last one, I knew right away it was almonds with wasabi, but I swear I couldn’t taste any soy sauce!

On to the peanut butter! Ponzi showed the different brands to the chat room. First up was Jif Simply creamy. It’s very creamy, but not as good as the last brand I tried. It was about middle of the road as far as peanutty taste.

The next brand was Skippy Natural creamy. It’s a different flavor, but I like it. It has some kind of kick to it. It’s very creamy, even more than the Jif. The flavor is excellent on this one.

The third one is I’m Healthy original creamy Soy Nut butter. It’s creamy, but it’s also very… ick. The taste is just nasty. I knew it wasn’t real peanut butter. Dude, seriously. Give me a bucket. I’m not eating that. I told her to throw that one away.

The last brand is an organic peanut butter. I was afraid to try it, I admit it. I told Ponzi that if this one wasn’t actual peanut butter, I was putting it up her nose! First, I sniffed it. It smelled like peanut butter, so I tried it. Good consistency, and creamy. It isn’t quite as creamy as the first two, but it had more of a peanut taste.

After trying all of them, I’d have to say #2 was my favorite. Funny thing is, Ponzi revealed that that is the same one who has a label claiming they are the best tasting peanut butter of them all. Kat disagrees though. She prefers Jif, and after watching this video to put it online for me, she went to the kitchen to make a sandwich. Seriously.

Ponzi has now threatened to make me eat that Soy stuff the next time she’s mad at me. I think I’ll start learning to behave.

Total creds to Chris Pirillo forthis topic. I was reading through some of my RSS feeds and here is a post about a peanut butter taste test. I must say that this is a really cool topic because if you like peanut butter, then you most likely have a brand that you think is SSOOOOO much better than

Simply Jif is okay for everyday cooking but if you really want the best tasting, get some roasted fresh peanuts, put them in a food processor with no oil (peanuts have natural oil) no salt and start the machine, If you want crunchy, then add a few more near the end. keep refrigerated but it won’t last. yum. vegan and healthy.

What do I think? I think I wish I didn’t watch this video. Why? Because unfortunately I am allergic to peanuts… therefore peanut butter. Thanks for making me feel even worse than I was a minute ago about being allergic! I can eat the soynut and sunflower seed butters but as you experienced, Chris, they taste like… well just watch Chris’ reaction. So if someone asks me what my favorite type of peanut butter is I will just stare at them. On a side note, living with allergies isn’t fun. I can’t eat so many things because of it. Now there are labels on everything saying: May Contain Peanuts and things of that sort. You may say “Oh well thats just for legal issues”. Well yes even I thought these things were safe to eat until I ate a Dove chocolate that sent me to the emergency room.

Nutella is good… it’s not peanut, but rather hazelnut. I love it though.

If it’s strictly peanut butter, I’d have to say Jif.

I was just introduced to CB’s nuts fresh ground peanut butter last week (made in Poulsbo, WA). Delicious when mixed with vanilla ice cream and covered in hot fudge.

Skippy Natural FTW!

regular pb

Parker Family Farms. Period. (in the refrigerated aisle, locally here in Madison by the regular butter). I used to like Jiff and to a lesser extent Skippy but now they taste terrible comparably. Parker Farms (from Minnesota) stiffer than most, needs refrigeration, but you don’t have to mix the oil and peanut butter (it does separate at room temperature). The BEST peanut butter, hands down. Your bread and jelly will thank you.

Personally I prefer the chunky types of penut butter that stick your jaws together. Though they are harder to spread, it’s worth it for the crunchiness which contrasts nicely w/ soft bread and jelly.
As for the soy…I’d be nice to Ponzie if I were you :D

I absolutly love Peanut Butter!! In fact I have the same Skippy peanut butter thats in the video, in my hand right now eating it off of a spoon. HAHA

Krema is the oldest peanut butter manufacturer in the US, having made PB continuously since 1908. Their peanut butter is made from spanish peanuts, no added sugar, no added fats, no preservatives.

Kroger has a store brand peanut butter that is, I suspect, the same as Krema except for it has salt added. Same jar, although they use a different color lid.

There are many stores grinding peanuts in store to make fresh peanut butter, but I haven’t found any that can match Krema for taste. I suspect the difference is that it’s difficult to get just the right roast on the peanuts.

Peter Pan, people!

There is one that you didn’t test that I think is the best. Not even a mention about it in the comments yet. PETER PAN. I am not sure if this is a national product or not, that’s the problem. I am from Montreal and whenever I am in the north east US I grab some Peter Pan. We vacationed a lot as a family when I was young in Maine. I love it there. Peter Pan is all part of the childhood memory that also includes jumping waves in 59° water, drives by the President’s summer place (Bush Sr. in Kennebunkport), the fair and salt water taffy from Goldenrod Kisses in York Beach and the family being together.

Back to the PB. Thanks for the walk down memory lane. I have a jar of Peter Pan at my desk at work here. I am going to get some toast from the caf!

My favorite is the peanut butter a local natural food store grinds for me on the spot from fresh locally roasted peanuts here in the St. Louis area. It’s a coarse grind, making it a little crunchy, which I love. It also has no sugar type substance, which almost all branded peanut butters have. I almost always use peanut butter as a savory spread, not sure I even have any jam or jelly…

My favorite is ground on the spot at a natural food store using freshly roasted peanuts. That’s REAL peanut flavor. It also doesn’t contain any sweetners, which almost all branded PBs do. I only use peanut butter as a savory spread, except for making desserts.

Ewww, peanut butter, me not likes.

I like the peanut butter mixed with the jelly already in the jar

My wife and I began eating President’s Choice – All Natural “Just Peanuts” – brand peanut butter a few months ago.

There is No Salt and No Sugar Added.

Ingredients: Just Peanuts.

Both the Ceamy and the Crunchy are delicious. Our favorite is the Crunchy. My wife never like any kind of Cruncy peanut butter before.

It is distributed by Sunfresh, LLC in Richmond, VA.

Jiff Creamy…rocks. Good stuff.

Being a PB connoisseur from waaaaay back, I’ve tried many over the years. If you gotta go with a major name brand, then JIF is pretty good, but for the ultimate, you have to try MaraNatha Organic no stir Peanut Butter put up in Ashland OR. (I prefer the crunchy.)
It has great peanut taste and aroma and nice not too sticky texture, and does not separate. I’m sure there are other really good peanut butters out there, but this is tops.
This stuff is the Peet’s of peanut butters!

I love Jiffy. Jiffy is very creamy and i love that it is so natural.

My big stickler for peanut butter is TransFats. Most have Hydrogenated Oils in them. Any, even partially, is bad.
Big thanks to Skippy Natural for being a named brand that is offering a product without hydrogenated oils.
Back to the test (fearing organic): fascinating how much our tastes have migrated away from the way food tastes “straight off the vine”.
I used to do the spoon thing, now I usually use pretzels (buried in PB!!!).

That was one of the funniest videos I’ve ever watched from Chris! Blogged!

No thanks to those homogenized Peanut Butter jars. I like a brand Laura Skudders natural. It must be mixed to recombine, but kept the refrigerator afterwards, it doesn’t separate anymore. No additives, no sugars, just Peanuts. Try it. It’s closer to homemade that the advertised brands.

I love peanut butter, too. I can (and sometimes do) just eat it right out of the jar. Spoon, butter knife, whatever… just dip and lick. Soy butter? YUK!

My favorite is Smuckers Organic Creamy brand. You have to stir in the oil (no additives [emulsifiers] included to keep it from separating). We find it a touch light on salt, so we take advantage of the “big stir” to add a little. Once it is stirred in we keep it in the ‘fridge which prevents separation.

My sister is also a fan of Smuckers Organic, but pours the oil off to make the PB thicker. YMMV.

It’s a good thing to like peanut butter, as it’s supposed to be good for you. I’ve been thinking of eating more peanut butter, to get that missing protein and whatnot.

Anyway, that was a really fun video, and I hope to see more videos like this one.

Come on now Chris, maybe it’s just a Midwestern thing, but you have to throw some “Peter Pan” peanut butter in there. Personally I’m more a fan of the Crunchy (or chunky) peanut butter. Don’t get me wrong I have some Skippy creamy in the pantry, but if I’m making a sandwich…i love having some crunch to it…just my opinion.

I’d have to say Skippy Super Chunk is the best. It makes the sandwich more interesting, instead of just biting a flavored piece of bread. I’m not a big fan of creamy peanut butter, although that is all I have right now, and I want a PBJ…so, I guess I’ll have to settle.

skippy chunky peanut butter is by far the best, it makes you tingle just taking a bite.

Another vote here for Laura Scudder’s Natural peanut butter. You even get a work out stirring it. Once you get hooked on the natural, the hydrogenated stuff is like eating Elmer’s Glue.

Skippy Creamy – hands down!

A little Skippy mixed with an equal amount of Cool Whip – yum!

Or Skippy mixed with syrup makes a great ice cream topping.

Gotta go get my jar and spoon…

I would have to say Peter Pan Peanut Butter, and Peter Pan Honey Peanut Butter. Just nothing like it.
