What is Social Networking?

http://live.pirillo.com/ – How many of you are part of a social network? How many of you have no idea what a social network is?

The big buzzword these days is "social network" – but what is a social network?

Typically a social network is a service that allows you to keep track of your friends, family, and business relationship. Why would anyone want to join a social network? What’s the big attraction?

The big reason social networks are so popular is that they allow people to keep track of their friends easily. The idea is that you can have one place to visit to keep up with everyone in your network.

Of course, the problem is that there are so many social networks that it’s almost impossible to keep track of your friends. These networks – Facebook, YouTube, MySpace – don’t interact with each other cleanly.

If you can’t figure out why you would want to join a social network, then we recommend you don’t join one.

What do you think about social networks?

“If you can’t figure out why you would want to join a social network, then we recommend you don’t join one.”

Sometimes you just don’t have a choice. There’s a lot of pressure and intimidation.

I think social networking sites are a good idea but lately it seems, a lot of cyber-thugs have been moving in. Last week someone with the SN ‘Decadent’ was telling me that if I wanted to hang out on his social networking site, that I had to, “put some work in for the hood.” He proceeded to tell me that my avatar needed to have the right colors in it, “or else bad things might happen to your account.”

He then asked me what site I claimed and where my “momma” was posting from. It’s a shame how much the internet has been changing lately. In my day, we didn’t have MyTube or Emu music. We had 2400 baud modems and a respect for others on our BBS.

These cyberthugs are ruining the internet for everyone. Between 4chan, Digg, and LUE on GameFAQs, you can’t reasonably expect to surf the net in safety anymore. I feel sorry for the future. The internet superhighway is littered with casualties and nobody seems to be doing anything about it.

[...] Its as if the written word were not enough to convey the sense of urgency and interest in Social networks. Whilst we have refrained from trying to “categorise” the idea in this site we cant help point to a couple of great explanations as to what is social networking, so without further delay we present the Lockergnome himself and the smart and plain speaking presentations from the Commoncraft.com guys. I have tried myspace and facebook but every profile is of a 23 year old doing jello shots off someone abs…this is networking for professionals? Dont drink the koolaid about facebook, there’s a very low percentage of profesisonals let alone employed people using that. I have only seen 2 sites that have professional profiles that impresses me. There is a site called Linkedin and a site called Congoo. Both those sites have some high quality executive profiles and a serious feel to the sites.

Chris, I’m so glad you take the time to research and discuss the topics you do. Each is a little morsel of helpful, informative, or thought-provoking information.

Thanks

I’m creating an anti-social network. It’s for people who like to dress in black, smoke cigarettes, drink coffee, dye their hair, draw on themselves, listen to the Misfits, and break things.

Hi Chris:

Your expert advice is requested.
I’m looking for easy to use and maintain online platform to facilitate informal spiritual discussion or conversation (’satsang’). We are looking for simplicity, ease of maintenance. Since you are the guru of all media, you would know, and I feel lucky to have you to ask.

Currently we are using Yahoo groups, to enable convenience.
The reason is that many times, attendance to a live conference call is sporadic, due to other comimtments. It would be nice to add live calls, depending on the group’s choice. People can attend as their schedule permits and even review what they missed, by receiving the online communications they missed.

What do you recommend. BTW, Chris, your finds this month have been really amazing! preezo, resizr, etc. Thanks so much for all your help.

Is there something better? At times we’d like to record and share the mp3, or video or photos too (Yahoo has space for these and also polls). do you have a better recommendation? Thanks. Some members are not techie or computer rich, so we have to make it easy and convenient.
