Hey, Chris. Rex Hammock here. When not blogging at rexblog or doing my day job that includes publishing a magazine that goes to 500k small business owners, I’m the host of the wiki-based SmallBusiness.com. (And I’ve been friends with Ramon Ray for 6+ years.) The U.S. govt. actually defines “small business” in an industry-by-industry way because certain appropriations require portions of contracts go to “small businesses.” (Sidenote: some “big businesses” are always trying to get these “small business” contracts.) Often you see the number 500 employees and below, or you will see a specific revenue number in the definition. However, the vast amount of “small businesses” are actually individuals who are self-employed. Therefore, you’ll sometimes see the phrase in certain definitions, “small businesses with employees.” My small business has 25 employees. I think small business is more a state of mind than a size.
