What is OPML?
http://live.pirillo.com/ - OPML - Outline Processor Markup Language - has been floating around for a few years now, but what is it and how do you edit those files?
Essentially OPML is a type of XML document which was designed to help you organize data in an outline fashion, rather than maintaining all of the data in one big messy chunk, making it easier to transfer information back and forth betweens ervices.
Editing and OPML file is pretty simple. Since it’s an XML format, you can simply use your favorite text editor.
Of course, any XML editor will work, since OPML is an XML format.
Dave Winer has an OPML editor:
The OPML Editor follows in the tradition of simple text-based tools masquerading as a rich development platform. Or is it the other way around? It’s always been this way. The most powerful applications are also the most powerful development platforms. The various text editors on Unix. Quark XPress on the Macintosh. Notepad on Windows. Inside every text editor is the potential of platform, and every platform must have a simple text editor.
Buzz is an open-source,c ross platform, OPML editor that you may want to try in place of Dave Winer’s editor.

Marshall Kirpatrick already twittered yesterday that Chris Pirillo is using Grazr on the Gnomedex 2007 homepage but Pat Phelan pointed out this morning that Chris has now posted a great video tutorial on OPML which goes on to explain how Grazr is helping in marketing the conference. [Irritating obligatory disclosure: I'm an advisor to Grazr Corp.]

I couldn’t be more impressed with the work Chris Pirillo is doing right now with live and archived video - it’s really good stuff. I’ve been tweeting about it, talking to people about it and now I’m going to blog about it. Today one of his segments was an answer to a question I asked that lead to a 6 minute discussion about OPML. What is OPML? The simplest explanation is that it’s a bundle of RSS feeds that can be ported into and out of an RSS reader. For a more fleshed out explanation and

OPML RULES!!
Check out all the blue OPML buttons below every folder on podcast.com
It provides a VERY simple way to collect RSS feeds together and organise in to folders. The amazing power of OPML comes when you use ‘inclusion’ which enables a folder within a folder within a folder… etc.
Podcast.com will be going in to beta soon so people can start creating directories which produce OPML which can then be easily used to create ‘Directory Feed Players’ and widgets to navigate the directory and read the rss feeds and find great content.
The feed mantra goes like this:
OPML is the TREE
RSS is the VINES on that tree
the CONTENT is the FRUIT.
Tags and other metadata are the LEAVES and on the tree.
Very Zen ;)

Thanks for the plug of Grazr Chris (I’m an advisor to the company). You asked about other interesting uses of OPML and I think one of the best I’ve seen comes from Marjolein Hoekstra who built a marketing search engine called the Power 150 -
http://www.cleverclogs.org/2007/02/rssenabled_mark.html
Admittedly she used some Grazr specific functionality but the ingenious mashup powerfully demonstrates the remarkable versatility of OPML, RSS and ’small pieces, loosely joined’.

Chris, you asked for comments on uses of OPML other than for holding a group of feeds and porting it around? Distributed directories is a big one, among others. This is a dated — and draft — help page about directories http://hosting.opml.org/amyloo/osite/help/howtos/distdir.htm
BTW, you’re a TMBG fan, aren’t you? Interesting offer on their last podcast (27a). I couldn’t be sure, it was a little cryptic, but I think they’re offering free rights to “I Should Be Allowed to Think,” to a talk show. The digital host voice praises Allen Ginsberg for letting them use the opening lines without any sort of monetary or other consideration, kind of sighs all idealistically about the sentiment, then says she’d like to see the song used on an “American style TV chat show.” See if you think so. 2 or 3 or 4 songs in.
