What is .Net?

http://live.pirillo.com/ – .Net (dot net) is a programming framework that Microsoft provides to developers. And it's pretty neat: it allows developers to more readily create applications, and developers have mostly moved to the .Net framework.

.Net allows developers to jump in and create programs quickly – rapid application development – and integrates multiple capabilities that developers want at their fingertips.

The nice thing about .Net is that it's starting to become cross-platform compatible: Mono, available for OS X and Linux, will emulate some .Net features.

Are you a developer? Do you use .Net?

Dang it… I was just telling myself the other day that I wasnt all that lazy for not moving to .NET from classic ASP (like the rest of the world) … now I wake up and read this from a dude I really like / respect…

I’ll be digging all the .net books I bought a few years back out of the garage and dusting them off now.

.NET started as a classic Microsoft FUD operation. In the late 1990s, Microsoft had just successfully fought off a frontal assault on its market dominance by killing the Netscape Web browser with its free Internet Explorer. But Microsoft was facing a host of new challenges, including serious problems with COM, C++, DLL hell, the Web as a platform, security, and strong competition from Java, which was emerging as the go-to language for Web development.
