Chris,
I have used Linspire exclusively since it was Lindows 3.0. It was more like a VW bug then... You did it for the whole VW experience. The fact that it was a car was incidental. With 5.0 almost out of Beta, I can tell you that it is BETTER in some ways than Windows XP, a bit worse in others, but usable, and overall it is at least its equal.
I am no Linux freak. I was a Windows user that wanted to learn something new and I do not use the command line in Linux.... ever. There are a few weaknesses in the Linux stable regarding some software, especially games, but it is all getting so much better now. I will never willingly go back to just a Windows world. I LOVE missing out on the latest Viruses and Adware.

Linux has been very useable on the desktop for many of us. While Linspire tends to get press due to its "handholding" approach and big budget, there are hundreds of viable distros out today.
To be fair in your "review," try using Linux on the desktop for six months. Just "calling it out" without knowing much about it doesn't hit the mark.

Depends on what you want your "desktop" to do...
Email, web, graphics/photo editing, viewing quicktime, windoze media, flash, cd burning, coding/programming, wifi internet, ipod management, mp3 ripping, audio /editing.. all this i do with Linux. Hmmm seems like a pretty good desktop system to me.
