The surface is not etched ie. burned, but changes color due to a chemical reaction. Nevertheless, a lightscribe label is a burn more, and many people "burn" multiple times to enhance contrast. The effects of this on burner life span may not be big, but they're there.
I don't regret having bought mine two years ago, though. Burn quality is still better than that of cheap new burners.

I just ordered one yesterday...thanks for letting me know what it is going to take! What I want to know is will it lessen the life of the disk? I read an article that said as soon as you burn your disk, it starts to deteriorate at a pretty progressive speed, and it is why older disks have issues as they age. That is why the surfacing starts to loosen as time goes by. The surfacing on my older burned CD's literally just peeled right off. So, if this is an issue just burning the CD in the first place...how much life span is going to be lost heating it up even more to etch the surface?.

I use my Lightscribe burner to just put simple text on my cds...
Looks nice, perfectly centered and adds a touch of 'neatness'
to my burned cds.

I have lightscribe and really like it for what I use it for. I had it at work and used it to ensure others didn't walk off with discs I created as I was an IT Support Tech for the last 17 years. About a month ago I changed jobs. However it is slow and greyscale. I also have an Epson R380 printer that prints on printable CD\DVD Media and it is alot faster and does a great job on color printed discs.

I have a LS-capable drive, but the media is prohibitively expensive so I haven't ever used that function!
