People used to have to think about what to do about waste, until garbage collection and sewers came along. We used to hunt and gather, until agriculture. We used to grow our own food, until larger-scale farming and transportation and food storage and markets made it possible not to. People used mail and personal visits, and then came the telephone. Even 100 years ago, electricity was a rare thing. Now how many of us can get by without it? Computers, the Internet, and mobile phones are just the latest things to become infrastructure. I was using computers in the early '80s, but I have to think now: without Internet access, what did I _do_? That sort of thing often happens with infrastructure.
