3G is that provides the higher speed.
speed is 144kBps in vehicles,
384kBps for door
2.48MBps for Indoor offics.

Its standards are EDGE, 3GPP, UMTS(Universal Mobile
Telecomunication)

LOL!!!! i tried googling it because I found myself in the same situation…it seems odd that 3G would be for 3rd generation because wouldn’t 3rd G or 3gen be more logical to say? and as for 3gigs well it should be 3GB. Maybe you should try contacting the project engineer of the iphone over at apple for a clearer definition ahahaaa. and i think its hilarious how commercials just assume you know what 3G is.

Well I was on Cingular for about 2 years and after 6 months Upgraded my phone and sim card which was a 3G sim card never knew what that meant my previous was an edge sim card anyway the phone sucked the service sucked but that those contracts the public have to have while us governement it is waived for cause they felt it was to restricting kept me in so I got another phone this sim card was a new at&t which should null contracts since my contract was signed before merger take over whatever you call it this one said 3g and edge on it and guess what didnt notice a difference it still sucked all I know it stands for 3rd generation mobile service which simply means since the first introduction of cell phones technology has up graded over the years and got more advance as it did came voice mail,caller id and more powerful mobile networks which led to the internet being accessed from a portable device your cell phone the technology is know as networks if you remember early cell phones that didnt have min plans you just had bills and paid ne way its just a means to idenifiy a new way (network) to that wirless service is provided on, However I dropped att in march dont want iphone went to verizon and love it dk wat network it uses but love it

third generation of mobile phones with more services .you mean this iphone will actually work in areas where i need a phone !! i am paying for services every month butt i can not get an active signal…go fiqure !
and when is Canada going to get with the USA and start along side of USA instead of kissing their butt …more canadiens shop in the united states as products are not available in canada…cha cha ching !! $$$$$$$$

People annoy me. I get kids who don’t work for anything and get better tech then me (an uber geek), yet don’t have a fraking idea how it works or what it even is. While I don’t know the exact details of the 3G network, I do know that it’s faster then the edge network (which the 1st gen iPhone used). I also know that while the iPhone 3G is only $200, it’s subsidized by, of all people, AT&T. This means you’re stuck with a horrible carrier, at a horrible monthly rate. I do not plan on getting the iPhone for this reason. I would love a prepaid version, or at least one that didn’t require a 2 year contract, activation, early termination, and other fees. If Virgin Mobile supported it I would cry tears of geeky joy. Now if you’ll excuse, my teas done.

Many of my friends have made the mistake of thinking 3G meant 3 Gigabytes. They seemed very confused about what 3G really was. It makes sense when they don’t get it but when the Media is confused that is just bad.

3G means the 3rd Generation of mobile networks (e.g. the new UMTS standard). The 1st and 2nd generation networks used the GSM standard. UMTS is a new way of delivering data with a speed up to 7.2mb/s (not quiet sure) and gives us the ability to recive mails while calling and many other things.

I think that the whole 3g addition to the iPhones name is somewhat dumb even as I sit here typing this on my iPhone. I wish they would have called it the iPhone II or some other cool tag to add to the name other than the network standard it is based on. 3g to me is some lame tag to pit ok the name of the phone to make it aound cool. But that won’t stop me from getting one. Oh well.
