What is 3G?

The Media is clueless on what 3G means. Some news reporters claim that “the three-gigabyte iPhone” was released. Some report that it’s the 3rd Generation iPhone. Ugh. I asked people over at Friendfeed just what exactly they think 3G means. The answers are interesting, for sure.
To be honest, I don’t even know what 3G means. 3Ghz band? – Aaron Brazell
Aaron- it stands for ‘Go wait in line while a Get a burrito because we’re going to be here all night. Goodnight…’what? they’re sold out?’ Greeeeat. – Ryan
That’s 4G! :) – Aaron Brazell
I’ll take a guess – 3G refers to the iPhone using the 3G or 3rd generation high-speed mobile phone data network? – Tad Donaghe
Yuck. I’ve seen this, too. Luckily our reporter didn’t even get into it, but I made sure I looked at her copy before the story was released. It’s not just the media though — lots of buyers are saying ridiculous things. Like, they’re buying this version of the iPhone because the OS is more of an open platform than the previous model. Ehhhh. I cut that quote, along with a quote about "speedier cell phone service." No, the phone service is not faster. – Kevin Hessel
iPhone 3G doesn’t mean 3G. – Chris Qie
I heard a Canadian reporter call it a G3 iPhone. Nice try lady, but you’re about three processor brands too late. ;-) – Cecily Walker
LOL @ 3rd Gen iPhone! Had that same discussion with the three iPhone users in my office. They swore this was the third gen phone, thus 3G. Ugh… – JA Castillo
So what DOES it mean already?!?! – Lisa L. Seifert
Gee, you mean ordinary non-technical people get confused by the mobile industry’s vast array of acronyms, and don’t even bother to try to comprehend? You don’t say? Seriously, you can say 3rd generation high-speed mobil phone data network but now try to explain what THAT means to someone who doesn’t really care. – Jason Wehmhoener
its the mobile phone standard/technology between 2g & 4g – mike dunn
G is for generation The original iPhone used the 2G GSM standard, but, because it took advantage of some updated standards for data, it was called a 2.5G phone. GSM and other 2G standards like CDMA are all digital, as distinguished from the first gen analog phones. 3G (of which there are a few competing standards) offers faster data transmission than the the fastest 2.5G data standardsstandards, and in theory can support higher quality voice too. 4G will be faster still. WiMax is sort of a 4g preview. – Erik S
People tend to lose interest when they hear an acronym explained with more acronyms. What’s the difference between GSM and CDMA? What makes 2.5G different from those? Why are there so many different incompatible standards? (I follow this stuff and have answers to these questions, but most people are just irritated by the whole mess) – Jason Wehmhoener
@Jason, (a) Not caring doesn’t excuse a journalist’s obligation to get the facts right, (b) a journalist’s job is to cut through the mumbo jumbo to make it understandable, (c) one would hope the reporter covering such an event is either a biz or tech reporter and they DO understand it. If that’s not possible, it doesn’t negate a and b, (d) they can avoid the issue and just call it faster because the average *reader* of an iPhone story as a news story (rather than as a tech story) probably doesn’t care – Kevin Hessel
Kevin I want to agree with you but the mobile phone technology space is fragmented beyond reason. I don’t expect a reporter on a culture beat to get it. – Jason Wehmhoener
Most people are clueless about 3G — they don’t care about the things we think they do. – Mitch Ratcliffe
The main stream media is generally clueless about tech. It never ceases to amaze me how lazy some reporters are. If they did just 5 minutes of research before writing or reporting on a story they would be 100% more informed and not look like idiots. Even here in silicon valley we still have reporters that fit this MO. – Jeff P. Henderson
1 – Who would want a 3 gb iPhone and 2 – All most people know about 3G is that its faster than whatever was on the 1st gen iPhone (EDGE). – Ethan
Well, they are THE media.. What do you expect? They are not geeks, like us. =) – Winston Teo
That’s almost as funny as their use of the word ‘hacker’ – Rob Fuller via twhirl
OHH…and i thought 3G stands for three grams. – Nir Ben Yona via twhirl
It gets worse: http://badwriting.plugly.net/3… – Jules
And they tell that old media are very careful about fact checking. As a blogger I at least have a habit to google everything I’m not 100% sure about. I have a feeling they are connected at least. – Svetlana Gladkova via twhirl
The reporter on the culture beat who isn’t sure talks to either the tech colunist or looks it up. That’s his or her JOB. – Cyndy
@Jules- wow, that has to be the worst. – Jake (aka Jawee)
Are this people even human? – Jim Williams
Here’s a wikipedia entry for 3G: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3… – imabonehead

It’s definitely interesting when I see this question come up. “What is 3G?” Surprisingly, if you read most of the commentary, not only do mainstream media not get what 3G actually stands for, but a lot of the general populace isn’t acquainted with telecom terminology (nor should they be). Strangely enough, this has actually

I know that edge is 2.5G and that 3G is approximately five times faster, so the number may represent date transfer rate and the letter may have something to do with the technology used in wireless g routers. I don’t know though, I’m going to check if I was right or not.

As far as I’m concerned 3G means using one of the many UMTS bands to deliver fast mobile Internet and video calls.

3G stands for the amount of “wow” factor they hope a given product has. It’s established by bringing carefully selected consumers into a simulated retail environment where , after signing binding NDA forms, they see the product, often a prototype. Sophisticated techniques (usually interns) measure the frequency with which the test subjects find some feature that makes them say “gee!” or something equivalent. With the new iPhone, the average was about 3, hence it’s the “iPhone 3G.”

3G has been the standard for years in Europe and Asia. Most of them have gone on to 4 and even 5G. America is always behind the curve on technology. Unfortunately, I do not yet have 3G in my area. It is scheduled here early next year, so I have not yet been able to experience it. 4G is already being talked about in training classes and will soon take over. Of course, by then 5 and 6G will take effect overseas. 3G is “supposed” to be close to DSL speeds, at least that is what we are supposed to tell our customers. I look forward to it myself.

I think it has to do with the internetspeed
1G = Gprs
2G = Edge
3G = UTMS, HSDPA

FROM AT&T’S WEBSITE (The new IPhone, not the old, uses this network)
The AT&T 3G network uses HSDPA/UMTS technology (High Speed Downlink Packet Access/Universal Mobile Telephone System), which makes it possible to enjoy a variety of feature-rich wireless services. It also gives AT&T the advantage of offering simultaneous voice and data services. That means you can talk and use the Internet at the same time. How’s that for multitasking?

1G was the analog network that now has grown obsolete, 2G/EDGE is the current standard for cellphones, 3G is the newest network that can produce faster data, and, according to my dad who works for AT&T, they are already looking into 4G research… Hello iPhone 4G? Who knows…

What does the “3G” in the Apple 3G phone mean? It’s clear, that it means third grift. As we all know, a grifter is a conman, so the grift is the con.

3g refers to 3rd generation wireless (cell) communications protocols.
Want to take your USA based phone to Asia and Europe and still receive your calls?n You need 3g.
Apple did not invent it, nor are they the first to use it (far from it).
Higher bandwidth and multimedia capabilities included.

All I know is that I used it with AT&T, for my cell, and it was a little faster, but nothing I couln’t live without.
Maybe if I tested it on a laptop. I’ll let you know.

I think 3G is some kind of world wide network that is similar to wifi only slower and a net that we can access to from our cellphones but of course they charge you and that sucks…FD… does anyone knows how to access for free to a 3g network…please let me know.

Hmmmm, 3G, I think the had named a slower network maybe 1G? And that stood for something, but as it improved, the numbers went up, and eventually got to 3G?

I think that the whole 3g addition to the iPhones name is somewhat dumb even as I sit here typing this on my iPhone. I wish they would have called it the iPhone II or some other cool tag to add to the name other than the network standard it is based on. 3g to me is some lame tag to pit ok the name of the phone to make it aound cool. But that won’t stop me from getting one. Oh well.

3G is the third generation of mobile phone standards and technology,3G technologies enable network operators to offer users a wider range of more advanced services while achieving greater network capacity through improved spectral efficiency. Services include wide-area wireless voice telephony, video calls, and broadband wireless data, all in a mobile environment. Additional features also include HSPA data transmission capabilities able to deliver speeds up to 14.4Mbit/s on the downlink and 5.8Mbit/s on the uplink.3G networks are wide area cellular telephone networks which evolved to incorporate high-speed internet access and video telephony. IEEE 802.11 networks are short range, high-bandwidth networks primarily developed for data.

3G means the 3rd Generation of mobile networks (e.g. the new UMTS standard). The 1st and 2nd generation networks used the GSM standard. UMTS is a new way of delivering data with a speed up to 7.2mb/s (not quiet sure) and gives us the ability to recive mails while calling and many other things.

Many of my friends have made the mistake of thinking 3G meant 3 Gigabytes. They seemed very confused about what 3G really was. It makes sense when they don’t get it but when the Media is confused that is just bad.

People annoy me. I get kids who don’t work for anything and get better tech then me (an uber geek), yet don’t have a fraking idea how it works or what it even is. While I don’t know the exact details of the 3G network, I do know that it’s faster then the edge network (which the 1st gen iPhone used). I also know that while the iPhone 3G is only $200, it’s subsidized by, of all people, AT&T. This means you’re stuck with a horrible carrier, at a horrible monthly rate. I do not plan on getting the iPhone for this reason. I would love a prepaid version, or at least one that didn’t require a 2 year contract, activation, early termination, and other fees. If Virgin Mobile supported it I would cry tears of geeky joy. Now if you’ll excuse, my teas done.

Well I was on Cingular for about 2 years and after 6 months Upgraded my phone and sim card which was a 3G sim card never knew what that meant my previous was an edge sim card anyway the phone sucked the service sucked but that those contracts the public have to have while us governement it is waived for cause they felt it was to restricting kept me in so I got another phone this sim card was a new at&t which should null contracts since my contract was signed before merger take over whatever you call it this one said 3g and edge on it and guess what didnt notice a difference it still sucked all I know it stands for 3rd generation mobile service which simply means since the first introduction of cell phones technology has up graded over the years and got more advance as it did came voice mail, caller id and more powerful mobile networks which led to the internet being accessed from a portable device your cell phone the technology is know as networks if you remember early cell phones that didnt have min plans you just had bills and paid ne way its just a means to idenifiy a new way (network) to that wirless service is provided on, However I dropped att in march dont want iphone went to verizon and love it dk wat network it uses but love it

LOL!!!! i tried googling it because I found myself in the same situation…it seems odd that 3G would be for 3rd generation because wouldn’t 3rd G or 3gen be more logical to say? and as for 3gigs well it should be 3GB. Maybe you should try contacting the project engineer of the iphone over at apple for a clearer definition ahahaaa. and i think its hilarious how commercials just assume you know what 3G is.

3G is that provides the higher speed.
speed is 144kBps in vehicles,
384kBps for door
2.48MBps for Indoor offics.
Its standards are EDGE, 3GPP, UMTS(Universal Mobile
Telecomunication)
