What FTP Client do you Use?

Nat from Nat.tv called in during the live call portion of our show tonight. It was fun to just chit chat for once. The next caller wondered what type of FTP clients are good.
Pretty much the only recommendation I have for Windows is WinSCP. It’s free, it’s fast and it works great. It uses the same client as FileZilla. To me, FileZilla is actually ugly, and I don’t much like it. However, using WinSCP is just nice.
WinSCP is an open source SFTP client and FTP client for Windows. Its main function is the secure file transfer between a local and a remote computer. Beyond this, WinSCP offers basic file manager functionality. It uses Secure Shell (SSH) and supports, in addition to Secure FTP, also legacy SCP protocol. Its main function is safe copying of files between a local and a remote computer.
Features include:
- Graphical user interface
- Translated into several languages
- Integration with Windows (drag&drop, URL, shortcut icons)
- U3 support
- All common operations with files
- Support for SFTP and SCP protocols over SSH-1 and SSH-2 and plain old FTP protocol
- Batch file scripting and command-line interface
- Directory synchronization in several semi or fully automatic ways
- Integrated text editor
- Support for SSH password, keyboard-interactive, public key and Kerberos (GSS) authentication
- Integrates with Pageant (PuTTY authentication agent) for full support of public key authentication with SSH
- Windows Explorer-like and Norton Commander-like interfaces
- Optionally stores session information
- Optionally supports standalone operation using a configuration file in place of registry entries, suitable for operation from removable media
For a Mac, there really isn’t an “excellent” FTP client as of yet. But if you’re running Windows at all… it’s WinSCP FTW!

I’m hardcore, on either Windows or Mac I use the command-prompt/terminal.
Maybe CoreFTP Lite on Windows to have a bit more convenience and still be light-weight.
But as my UltraEdit has this amazing FTP-functionality in it and I only use it to upload to webhosting, well, I only upload text and some pictures.

On the Mac, Transmit is by far the nicest FTP client I’ve found! It’s got pretty much every feature you could hope for, I’ve never had any faults with it.

I use FireFTP, the Firefox extension. Has everything I need.
@home I use Directory Opus, just because it’s there and has drag and drop. Apart from that, it’s pretty much the same.

For the Mac, I use Secure Fetch — I’ve used Fetch for-ever and like it just fine, thank-you-very-much! UW Computing also suggests Fugu, but I haven’t used it..

For the Mac, about the best ftp is possibly Transmit. One of the nicest “extras” is that it can connect to a WEBDAV site such as Apple’s .mac at FULL speed. Much faster than managing an iDisk from a .mac account directly in the Finder. Transmit also does nice synchronization, etc.

Konqueror does it all! FTP/SFTP. It is the way it should be; tabbed, split screen, file manager and browser, all in one application. The price is right too. KDE is going to be available on Windows soon, but who really cares about that Native to Linux, Konqueror is better all the way around the desktop of any platform.

Ipswitch’s WS_FTP Pro is my FTP client of choice, as it has been for many years.

Filezilla may be ugly, but it works great. What should it matter if a program is ugly if it works well? I mean, really, have we come to the age when how a program looks is more important than its functionality? If that was the case, one could make the argument that Word 2007 was one of the greatest programs ever. I for one cannot make that argument.

I recall WinSCP being a nice, quick stand-alone FTP client. I haven’t used it in quite a while…. Will have to give it a try again.
I think the knock on Filezilla being “ugly” is personal preference. Its actually my FTP client of choice and runs great off a USB thumbdrive, has nice site-management abilities and is quite flexible.
For OSX, there are really only 2 that I’ve ever considered (not counting the OSX Version of Filezilla) – Transmit from Panic is amazing (but costs a few bucks). Cyberduck is a nice, simple and free FTP client that just works well.

One good suggestion that stems from a long history with FTP is the totally awesome FlashFXP. It’s got a great interface, is very reliable and generally all around useful. If you’re on OSX, Cyberduck is the one to beat and Linux has the deliciously stable lftp.

hey chris. about the itunes question. i do the same thing just it is a 2ed hard drive. what i did what make a folder on my main added all the music i have scattered in my system. then went in to itunes set up my itunes folder on my 2ed hard drive. added all my music to itunes by draging and droping in to itunes. then hit clabrate music in itunes. it will take all the music and add it to one folder. after that del all the music you have one the main hard drive(you dont need 2 copys). then set up itunes to each time you add music it will get copyed to the itunes folder..
done!

FileZilla is the only way to fly. I love the additional idea of raw FTP commands. A nice program for beginners and advanced users alike.

You can change the path iTunes uses for its library. Go to Edit -> Preferences, click the Advanced tab, and then lick the Change button for the iTunes Music Folder location. Set the appropriate path, and then OK out of everything.
