What do Bachelors Eat?

UncleJohn is a long-time community member, as well as a halfop in our live chat room. He is a bachelor, and sent in some tips on how to cook for just one.

  • Cook large meals that make good leftovers. For instance, cook the spaghetti sauce separate from the noodles. The sauce can be reheated, and added to in order to make other unique meals throughout the week. One example is my famous Hoagie and spaghetti sauce sandwich topped with chedder cheese.
  • Top Ramen Ramen noodles are your friend. Ramen by itself isn’t very good. You can use the plain Ramen noodles in meals, instead of buying actual spaghetti noodles. This can save a few bucks. These are cheap and easy to fix. The noodles tend to cook a lot faster then actual spaghetti.
  • Slow cookers Get yourself a slow cooker. You can cook stews, chili, and other large meals in these. Slow cookers will keep your food warm for a long period of time. The best part is the whole “dump it in and forget it” part. Once everything is in the pot, the slow cooker will do the rest.
  • Make “TV dinner” style meals You can freeze these, and heat them up whenever you need or want to. When you’re not in the mood to cook anything, zap one of these instead of an actual unhealthy TV dinner, or grabbing fast food.
  • Get yourself a vacuum sealing system These really work, and will keep your leftovers fresh for least a week. I wouldn’t trust them for any longer then that though.

Burrito Myeat-o

1 microwave burrito sliced in half
2 hot dog buns
1 slice of cheese again sliced in half

microwave the burrito then slice in half
place one half of cheese on each hot dog bun
place each burrito half on top of cheese
microwave again for 10 seconds
you may want to tear open the burrito to mush it down some thats just personal preference.

That’s a bachelor meal baby!

It’s alright, I’m sure it’s all in good fun.

“What are you doing dude” lol.

What do bachelors eat? The other night I made Ribeye steak, baked potato, peas, corn, and bread n butter. And I had plenty for leftovers. That’s not a “typical” supper for me though. Usually I’m eating store bought fried chicken or pizza. Or I’ll go out to eat. Don’t know what I’m going to do today because the leftovers are gone and I don’t want to get up and go anywhere. Well there’s always hamburger in the freezer :)

Go to a place that sells bagels and buy a bag of day old bagels ($3 a dozen). Keep them in the freezer and they last for weeks. Just use the “low” setting on the microwave to thaw one out when you want.

Well, since I was making the money when I was a bachelor (compared to my income of $0 as a house dad), I ate out. A lot. Every other day I would eat out dinner with a friend, usually at a moderate restaurant (Out Back when they were good, Max & Erma’s, Don Pablo’s, Olive Garden, the occasional Red Lobster) and then eat something more fast foodish, although I’d try to keep it on the healthier side.

Yes, about once a month I’d cook something because I felt like it, and I cooked too much because there aren’t really any good recipes for just one person, and eating leftovers… by the time I felt like eating them, they were long gone. Considering I hat cleaning around the house (still do), and the fact that it would usually mean cleaning at least two pots and then the dishes… I devoted my money and time elsewhere. Cooking for three or more seems to be much more worth it. Two is OK, but the more the nerrier.

So be.. well paid (not rich per se) and eat out. No dishes, no pots and pans. NO FUNKY SMELLS LEFT OVER FROM WHAT YOU COOKED OR WHAT YOU FORGOT TO THROW AWAY! :)

Goulosh/Beefaroni – 1 lb ground beef, 1 lb elbow macaroni, 2 lb Ragu Old world meat sauce.

Tacos – 1 lb ground beef, 1 old el paso stand and stuff taco kit, 1 bag of shredded lettuce or iceberg garden salad. (just crunch up the shells and put em in a bowl they fall apart anyway.

Patio brand Burritos – You can get these little guys 4 for a $1.00… can’t beat that.

Crock Pot – beef stew, roasts. Just set it to high if you put potatoes in it so they cook properly.

Chicken thighs – DarkMeat4TehWin Toss some lemon pepper on em and bake for about 40 minutes @ 400.

Chicken Soup – Poach some chicken drumsticks in enough water to cover them with some celery and a tiny bit of union soup mix. leave the water in and take out the drummies strip off the chicken and chop it up, add carrots, egg drop pasta, celery. Put the bones back in the soup and simmer for about an hour. Do not add chicken breast. White meat is for vegetarians and elves.

A suggestion as a bachelorette is when you buy meat from the supermarket, but it in plastic bags with marinade in the freezer. That way when you get ready to go to work, you can put it in the fridge to thaw all day and it’s ready for the oven by time you are home.

Well I’m a Bachelorette but I’m a poor college student, so here are my favorites:

Michelina’s Lean Gourmet – they’re under 300 calories per meal and are 98 cents at WalMart!

Apples & Carrots – these foods stay fresh for awhile in the fridge. I hate buying some other veggies, like bagged salad, because you have 1-2 days to eat them before they rot!

Tuna, tuna, tuna!

:)

Actually cooking and preparing vegetables is very tedious I think, especially for one person, but since it is good to eat veggies I recommend also getting those canned vegetables. They are perfect for the person who has no time or is just lazy. They last long and can be eaten cold or hot.

I thought I would leave a comment with my recipe for the hoagie sandwich..

First of all the only advice I have for spaghetti is SUGAR! A touch of sugar will absorb the acid that is inherent in tomato paste/sauce and will make your suace taste bitter.

Now then the hoagie buns I use I get from the local bakery and are made of whole grain wheat and then dusted lightly with pepper. I then take cheddar cheese, and lay this on each bun and toast it in a toaster oven so the cheddar melts enough to grab onto the buns. This keeps the sauce from soaking in and making the buns soggy.

Ramen + corned beef + canned peas + feta crumbles = virtually instant, tastes great & great presentation with the bright red & bright green.

Flour tortilla + canned chunk chicken + bagged salad + sundried tomato pesto + feta crumbles = messy but good.
