What did you Want to be When you Grew Up?

What did you want to grow up to be when you were little? I wanted to be a few different things. I even had the opportunity once to ask Bill Gates this very question. Did you know that as a kid, Mr. Gates wanted to be a Mathematician?

The first thing I can remember as a young child that I was determined to become was a farmer. I loved animals, and had family members who were in Agriculture. My Dad wanted me to grow up to be a Neurosurgeon, because they make a lot of money. So of course, I thought I wanted to be a doctor. Then, since I grew up Catholic, I thought I had a calling to be a Priest. That turned out to be a wrong number, as well.

Of course, you all know I went to college to become an English teacher, and we all see how that worked out. I ended up doing something completely different, because I gained a passion for Technology.

What did you want to be when you were little? Did you grow up to do it? Are you still in that field? Or… did you end up doing something completely different? I’d love to hear from you all. Keep in mind, this question is really mostly for the adults in my Community. I’m curious to see how many of you ended up living out your childhood career dreams.

Hey Chris! I actually did it. I wanted to become a doctor since I I was little, my mom was a registered nurse so I got to play with stethoscopes and such equipment. I recently graduated from Med School in the Caribbean ( I’m from Puerto Rico) and I’m on my way to start practicing on July. It’s great helping others and doing something you really love.

When i was little i can remember i want to be a rally driver i had always watched the rally on the the tele and developed a strong passion to become a rally driver but like chris i developed a passion for all things tech and i decided to become a network engineer and in my spare time i mess around with all things tech!

An artist but they make so little money. Be better off in Europe were art is still passionate it seems.

im 13, maybe a graphics deigner or really any job invovling photoshop, or flash, or illustrator or maybe even a movie director. but the whole graphics design thing looks really… idk

I want to work in the medical field

i’m 18, and since i was like 12 i wanted to be a web designer, im going to go to college to get a degree in web development.

BOOOOOOOOO!!!! LACROSSE SUCKS! I’m just playing, i’m bored :)

i’ve wanted to be so many things over the course of my life that now i can’t even remember half of them! For the longest time, i wanted to be a formula 1 driver, but that’s hardly a realistic goal. not to say i gave up on it, but it just wasn’t for me. I’m currently 16 and still undecided as to what i want to study. I’m narrowing my choice down to something science related, and not in medicine. But other than that i’ not sure yet. :)

I wanted to be a biologist or astronaut. Never thought I’d end up selling my soul to the computer industry -_-”

Man – i wish my english was better. – i’m serverly dyslexic.

I WANNA BE A NBA GAME ANALYST!

I am 17, nearly 18. Ever since a child i wanted to be a Pilot – preferable for the RAF, although any pilot would do. It has been a life long passion of mine to one day fly a plane and be up there in the clouds. Unfortunately, i have cataract in both my eyes, although it doesn’t effect my left eye. I have had numerous amounts of surgery on my right eye, but, using that eye alone, i cant see what i am typing now! I will be going to university next year to study computer science.

i am still trying to figure out what i really want

Since I was 5 I’ve wanted to be an artist and I am! I make lampworked glass, paint and do some graphic design. :)

I didn’t want to be anything initially. Then I had a whole range of possibilities, none of which worked out. I finally became a pro motorcycle racer, then a mathematician, and when I realized that I didn’t know why the math bit I became a computer nerd (applications, operating systems, dept mgr, consultant). Now that I’m retired I’ve decided that I don’t want to grow up, so I’m considering my options. Don’t tell my kids.

I ALWAYS WANTED TO BE A MUSICIAN. NEVER REALLY WANTED TO BE FAMOUS, JUST MAKE A LIVING PLAYING GUITAR AND SINGING.

30 YEARS LATER I CAN SAY THAT I HAVE PLAYED EVERYTHING FROM FRANK TO HOOBASTANK. I DIDN’T BECOME FAMOUS, BUT I HAVE PAID MY BILLS ON TIME AND STILL ENJOY WHAT I DO FOR A LIVING.

NOW I WANT TO BECOME A MUSIC PRODUCER. I GUESS IT DOESN’T HURT TO DREAM.

I’ve always wanted to be a NASCAR driver. I’ve loved motorsports since i was little and still love it now. I know that it isnt easy to get into that sport so i dont get my hopes up. But within a few years when i build a new rig I’ll be getting into some Professional Sim Racing.

i wanted to be a forensic scientist/lab techie or a (SITO) seniour internet technology officer and hey ho it worked out its a shame the forensic scientist didnt eh?lol

i want my own computer bussiness.

Being a pilot suits my personality perfectly – i love being high up, i love going fast and i am fearless.

My Dad once told me that he wanted to be an astronaut. Back then (around the time of the apollo missions to the moon) space exploration was very dangerous and didn’t have as much funding as it did today, as a result not many missions were flown. Today, shuttles are going up into space nearly every month and because of this my Dad feels that if he pursued his dream then he could be an astronaut. He went on to be an apprentice working for British Aerospace. He is now working in Saudi Arabia for British Aerospace as a Commercial Manager. He told me to never give up with my dream, and i won’t, as i know that my Dad regrets giving up on his.

As a side note; Chris, i am glad your parents are making a swift recovery.

i want to be a firetruck when i grow up

I wanted to be a computer programmer and start my own software company, to one day become as rich and famous as Bill Gates. It was an unrealistic dream, but at least I’m still a computer geek who plans to get into the industry.

I wanted to be an engineer, now I am computer admin for gaming servers, and now I am going to take “Computer and Network Support Technician”.

Glad to hear that all is good with parents.

let us see your room chris

i “want” to either work for NASA, be an astronomer, be a phicist, or ironicly, be in a pro band =)

I wanted to be an artist, but could never quite translate the images I could see in my head onto paper. I discovered photography, and now take photos all the time.

I wanted to be a magazine writer or journalist, but discovered computers, which consumed me. Now I write about technology for the Web.

well when i was 5 to may 15 2008- i wanted to be a computer repair man. well i was 14 and still am and know i want to be a movie director \

doctor high five, im planning to be going to med school, another 3 years to go though

Yeah parents always want you to earn lots of money because they havn’t got a good pension.

Okay Gang! This might throw you! In high school (1953) I wanted to own a Hi-Fi store; stereo was not yet available. In college I studied to be an actor . . . until I got a part-time job as a radio disk-jockey/announcer–and changed my life! I studied for and received a First-Class FCC engineer’s license and worked in radio and related business until retirement.

It’s been great! I was present at the State Dinner for the Apollo 11 Astronauts. I’ve met Buddy Holly, Billy Joel, The Moody Blues, George Martin, Kate Jackson, Marilyn Horne, Lynda Carter, Rafer Johnson, George Strait, Reba McEntire to name a few. Bought my first microcomputer in 1978; Rockwell Aim65. And still computerating and learning more and more.

The Hi-Fi store never came about but now I can (as you know) do all kinds of audio tricks with my computers.

Oh, and I heard Gustavo Dudemel conduct at Walt Disney Concert Hall! WOW!

Now if could just afford a fiber connection to an internet backbone….

Have FUN! Go where the wind takes you!

Dale

i want to do something lik u chris

I am still a kid, I am only 13.

However, I would like to be a programmer; I already program Java, HTML, PHP, JavaScript, C++, TrueBASIC, and have been making some iPhone applications through the SDK.

well.. im 12

i do programming and web dev…

javascript
HTML
objective C
C
C++
(Small amount of python and smalltalk)

i´m lucky that im just 13

Well, I’m 18, so I’m still growing up I guess, and well, at the moment I want to be a Mechanical Engenieer, I’m starting next september alrready, so guess I’m pretty much there.

But when I was younger, I really didn’t want to be anything, I knew that I just wanted to have lots of money xD, then I started knowing the diferent kind of things you can study, so scince I was 12 till I was 16, I wanted to study some kind of Engenieering related to computers.

Then I figured that computers was my hobbie, I loved it, but I wouldn’t like working on that, and I started liking mechanical design and all that kind of stuff.

i am 12 and i want to be a pro skateboarder or an inventor

When i was little i wanted to be a writer. Though right now i’m studying computer network engineering :)

Same here, same here.

What? Really? Me too! Me too! Except for the first part.

Same here. Can I join you?

i wanna be much older!!

When I was younger, unlike a lot of kids, I was dedicated to being a fireman. Every year for 4 or more years straight, I would always bully my parent’s into getting me a toy fire engine for christmas. For a brief period 2-3 years ago, I wanted to be a doctor, just to fill the void left by outgrowing the fireman dream, only to realize that I, like you Chris was only interested in such a career due to family expectations or persuation.

Now however, I am on the (very) fast track of computers and am loving it. If anyone even suggests another career, I shout loudly “Blasphemy!!!”.

My only concern is that there are so many other people in computer orientated proffesions that I will not easily be able to find work. =)

i want to WORK IN LAPD

Thanks for this Chris. When I was a child, I had a dream of being a lawyer. As you say that was a wrong number. I am instead a stay at home dad, raising and home schooling my two children, and for the most part and at most times quite happy with the decisions that have brought me to this point. I don’t that such has ever been anyone’s ‘dream’, but at the same time, I have a hard time imagining my life as anything different.

I’m 14, planning to be a programmer (yes…I know, pay is usually shit)

you want to go up to DJs and scratch them? lol?

wanted to be a professional water skier, then a photographer, then a radio station owner of some sort.

Now I teach Video and Audio Production on the university level. love it.

hmmm – teacher, nurse, nun (Catholics seem to get around!) After the dreams and a few (!!) years later – mom, librarian (without the degree) and software help desk . LOTS of hats over many years

I’m 18 and I’m looking into all sorts of stuff. Mainy in game design and programming, but then again I would kinda like to do what Chris does. Helping people out with the people with the same interests as myself. Oh well.Life could be worse I guess.

I want to be a computer science lecturer at University level. I hope to do a Doctorate in Computer Science. Nice video Chris.

pay isn’t that shit actually if u do what they ask to the dot (within reson) they pay you pretty good so do it if you want to

I wanted to be a information manager. Sadly I did not have the right math skills to keep up in school. Now I work for a web hosting company which I love, and looking into becoming a designer. At 33, I still think I am growing up.

I wanted to be a librarian or an archaeologist or a pharmacist… but that did not happen. I majored in English and decided to be a teacher until I hit student teaching and changed my mind. You have to admire a good teacher; they can instill more fear and devotion than a general probably could! Then I got married and had jobs in purchasing and administrative assisting for the data department where I got a degree in accounting and became a bookkeeper and girl Friday. Then I became a mother and part time bookkeeper; and for those of you without kids, YES that is a job too. I am only forty and they say a person changes professions seven times over the course of their lives. I guess that means I will be working until I am at least 70-80 and learn three more professions. Sorry to be so long winded but I wanted to present a different perspective. You have to learn something new every day!

I want to be an architect-In fact im going to be taking summer classes at Cornell University this summer for architecture. But I also want to co-found a programming business with my best friend

i want to be a games designer when i grow up. Why not?

What Do You Think?
