Violist is a chat room regular who has lived all his life in Alaska. Many people think there is nothing to do in this frozen land. Violist has submitted this list of things to do while in Alaska, to help dispel this myth.
- Camping Alaska is one of the most beautiful places to camp, because of the mass population of wildlife. I love the mountains, and in Alaska there are a lot mountains. On special nights, you can see an Aurora… also known as the Northern lights. The Northern Lights are so beautiful, but it only happens when it is really cold out.
- Cruise Alaska has a lot of things to see, and a cruise is one of the best things to do if you are visiting us. The cruise lines know when all the wildlife comes out, and they know where the best places to visit are. They also know the history of Alaska, and it is pretty interesting.
- Kayaking This is a perfect way to explore Alaska’s coves and all the different islands that Alaska has. Popular destinations are Kachemk Bay, Resurrection bay, Glacier Bay National Park, and Kenai Fjords National Park. These are just to name a few.
- Alaska’s State Parks Alaska has about 100 state parks across Southeastern and Western parts of the state. Denali State Park, to name one, is about 320,000 acres, and has a lot of wildlife. There are also a lot of things to do there, including visiting largest mountain in the U.S… Mount McKinley.
- River Rafting This is very fun, because you can see Caribou, bears grazing, and a lot of other wildlife. The rivers in Alaska flow pretty fast, so it is kind of dangerous because there are a lot of sharp rocks on the rivers.

Although all of those sound fun, the only ones in my budget are visiting Alaska’s State Parks and camping. Those two would be my first choice even if i had on million dollars, mostly in part because of my adventurous attitude.

I hear you can take a ferry from Northern Washington, like Bellingham and go thru the Alaskan Marine Highway to Seward and the Inside Passage zone. I have never thought of doing it, since I’m in the Seattle area, but is up for grabs. Not to mention that Alaska is best known for wild salmon and a singer named Jewel… “Who will save your soul” (1996’s 1 hit wonder?)

I have always wanted to go to Alaska, just to experience what cold actually is like in Barrow. Where the temperatures have been known to be as low as -50F. If I was to go to Alaska, id definitely take a cruise, they look absolutely gorgeous from what I have seen. The only thing putting me off from visiting southern Alaska is the ‘earthquake threat’.

I went to Alaska once, and what we did is we went to Seward and took a glacier cruise, and that was fun. We also went to several state parks, and saw lots of moose. It was in the winter, so we didn’t go camping or river rafting or kayaking. It was also during the time I had a broken leg, and that sort of stunk on the cruise. One thing I see you don’t have is that if you have the money, you can go up in a plane around the mountains. The best place to do this is Talkeetna. That was one of the most unforgettable and absolutely amazing experiences I’ve had in my young life.

I would take pictures of the Northern Lights for my photography portfolio. I think that would be a great thing to do. Plus they are so pretty too! =]

I just wanted to say that I took a cruise when I was young, and think it is one the best way to see Alaska. The cruise through Glacier Bay and seeing the whales was amazing.

Greetings,
You were correct. Kenai is pronounced “Ke (long e) Ni (long i).
Yes, Alaska is beautiful! I lived there 25 years (from 1975 to 2000). Camping, snowmachining, dogsledding, 10′ X 12′ frame cabin (no water or electricity), 16′ X 20′ log cabin living (just no water), and more. In 2000, I moved to Michigan, where I now live.
Have an awesome day!
