What are your Favorite Keyboard Shortcuts?

Recently, I made a comment about needing to map keys for my OS X keyboard. Using keyboard shortcuts can save you a lot of time when you’re working. One of our community members sent this list of shortcuts in to give all of us a bit of help when we attempt to GTD!

  • Option + Left / Right arrows When editing text, this combination will scoot you back and forth through the text one word at a time.
  • Option + Up/ Down arrows These move you through paragraph breaks. Up takes you to the start of the paragraph, and down to the end of said paragraph. Within the average Internet site, this also allows you to ’scootch’ the page up and down a little, ala mouse wheel style.
  • Command Key + Left / Right These keys can move you back and forth through pages in the same manner as the back and forward buttons themselves. This (for me) is much faster than using the trackpad, or reaching for the mouse.
  • Command Key + Up / Down These act as what I can only describe as being the ‘home’ and ‘End’ Keys. Basically, they will take you to the top or bottom of the page/text.

I think my favorite keyboard shortcuts for OS X is Command + Delete, which sends the selected object straight to the trash. I also set it up so that Command + any arrow key will switch to another space on my desktops. I love how OS X will let you customize them. It makes it a lot easier to be productive.

My favourite Windows keyboard shortcut is CNTRL/z otherwise known as “the great UNDO” of whatever you did last…it sometimes works in situations when the other undos won’t or aren’t even available.

I use these:

To close a window: Ctrl+W
To quit an app: Ctrl+Q
To open a tab in Firefox: Ctrl+T

Well i love my favorite keyboard bindings on linux of course but on windows i would like to develop some new ones. I just wish i had more support with windows key bindings. Thanks Chris See you on live.pirillo.com

The cut, copy, and paste shortcut keys: cmd+x, cmd+c, cmd+v
In Safari: cmd + T to open a new tab
cmd + W to close a window or current tab
cmd + L to highlight the addressbar
cmd + D to add a bookmark
shift + cmd + left/right arrow to move between tabs
cmd + R to refresh current page
cmd + shift and +/- to make text on a webpage smaller or larger

Also in Safari, I like adding my favorite pages to the top bookmarks so that I can get to them by using the command key and their corresponding number.

OS-X:
Command + Tab to switch between applications
Command + Tab + Q to quit the application that is highlighted
Command + Space to invoke Spotlight

So many more!! lol

My favorite is Fn+Page Up or Page Down for volume. I didn’t know a lot of those ones, thanks for posting them.

thanks for posting these tips Chris.

I constantly use:

windows key + r for the run command

windows key + shift + n for MS onenote

windows key + s to get a screen shot for onenote

Windows key + e to get to my computer

windows key + d to get to the desktop

windows key + l locks the computer

Sometimes I rely on these a little too much…

Actually my favorite shortcut is Ctrl-Shift when hovering over the Dock. If you have Dock Magnification off, it will turn it on as long as you have Ctrl and Shift held down. If you have Magnification on, it will turn it off.

This is really great for people who want to see their Dock icons big, but don’t want to have Dock Magnification on all the time.

ctrl+shift+esc
win+d
win+r

:p

Do not try Bobertoq’s shortcut. I tried it and it shut my computer down and it got me really pissed.

sorry man :( i just joking

cmd+J, try it in Safari or any text editor :)

I like Ctrl +c and ctrl +x and ctrl + v (Copy, Cut, paste)

alt+tab

for games or full screen applications

The old original shortcuts…

Ctrl + Insert = Copy
Shift + Insert = Paste

control + alt + delete

Crtl + C - Copy
Ctrl + V - Paste
Ctrl + X - Cut
Alt + Tab - Switch apps
Windows Key - Open Start
Windows + L - Lock
Alt + F4 - Close window

Operating on XP

ctrl and the arrows does flick between words.

alt+f4 - make sure you have 0 tabs open, and it plays a short video from the firefox creators. Works on firefox or internet explorer, but you can’t have tabs open.
–JOKE don’t do that. It closes the window.–

I would say windowkey+l - locks my laptop
