Your average power surge or fluctuation can easily be handled by most power supplies. However, for very quick power or voltage dips, the power supply is not able to compensate. This results in power from the PC components, namely the motherboard, reversing their flow direction, which can do SERIOUS damage to the hardware inside the computer.A UPS is a 100% necessary accessory for any desktop computer (laptops have their own battery backup) .. I'd consider it the MOST necessary accessory, myself.- Adam

Not only does a UPS prevent a machine from going offline, it’s also just as valuable, if not moreso, than a surge protector. The UPS informing me when the power-outage had happened, when it had kicked into battery mode and for how long. It's the best 80 GBP that I've spent this year on equipment, well worth the cost.I'm now considering getting one for our TV setup. My work colleague even has one for his fish tank!

I bought an APC Back-UPS ES after I got fed up of regular power outages in the area of Scotland that I live in, and haven’t regretted it.

In fact, I got home last night, having left my PC on all day to download a VMware virtual machine image (Windows 7 Ultimate Beta Build 6956) via BitTorrent, and it was still safely working away while the clocks on just about every other piece of electrical equipment was flashing 12:00.

The UPS informing me when the power-outage had happened, when it had kicked into battery mode and for how long.
