What are Widgets?
http://live.pirillo.com/ – A widget (also known as a gadget) is a small program that runs on your desktop all the time, which replaces the need to constantly visit a website in order to get common information.
Konfabulator started the widget craze, which was then bought by Yahoo.
Dashboard is OS X’s implementation of widgets.
Windows Vista has the Vista Sidebar, but the user interface is junk in comparison to OS X.
The Google Desktop offers an alternative experience, but its user experience is even worse than Vista’s sidebar.
We have our own widget which lets you watch Chris’s camers right on your desktop without having to visit live.
What widgets do you use? Have you made any widgets?

? When did that happen? If you think the train is passing you (or your Web site or your [sigh] printed materials), check out what’s free for Web 2.0 – my latest feature at Download Squad. If you always wanted to know what a widget is, or where to get some, it’s a helpful read. Update your logo, your Web site graphics and re-think icons. “It’s the experience, stupid.” [That’s Web 2.0.]

, sat at my kitchen table and answered the elusive question in a single word. “What’s Web 2.0? Widgets.” Suddenly, it made sense. Web 2.0 is the interactive Web (so sayeth Dave Winer and he should know) and widgets – a play on our old Econ 101 class’ finest example – are the glue that holds Web 2.0 together. In the Web 2.0 world, it’s a lot less about design and a lot more about place and experience. You want your content and not just your Web site to be

Nice clip Chris, but how could you not mention DesktopX? It pre-dated Konfabulator by about 2 years (1.0 released in 2001), and from version 2 allowed the creation of stand-alone “gadgets”, which don’t need a runtime to work.
I agree though that widget/gadget design on anything other than Dashboard sucks, I guess designers aren’t keen to venture into the Windows-based widget platforms… it’s a shame, really
