What AntiVirus Do You Use?
Do you use an AntiVirus program? If so, what one do you run? You do realize that that may not always be enough to keep you completely protected, right? Your best bet is layers of protection. I came across the above video, and used it to ask others what they use to keep their computers safe.
At work: Norton AntiVirus 2008, at home: AVG Free - Haggis (Sean)
My Mac ;) - Andru Edwards
Mac. Plus my Windows-on-VMware i just reuse a clean snapshot. - Glenn Batuyong
I’m on PC. I’m not using any. Was using NOD32, but opted to not renew. - Jason Shultz
Avast! The Pirate Approved Antivirus Tool! - Stephen Pierzchala
ClamAv on 1, Avast on another but usually I don’t run any antivirus - tsudohnimh
At home: AVG Free and Microsoft Defender - Alex Scoble CISSP
Nod32 on both rigs… - Live4Soccer
OS X - Brian roy
OS X. - Paul W. Swansen
Avira Antivir - Nicholas Kreidberg
Avira Antivirus, free for personal use and IMHO the best low-resource and good detection AV going. - cmiper
Currently trying NOD32 on XP Pro x64 - Jaemi Kehoe
Avast! - Molly, the Muse
None! I use a Mac with OS 10.5.5 all updated just today with the big 136MB Java iteration. Nothing installs without my password. - Siddharth Deb
Not using antivirus — haven’t had one in years. I’m just savvy enough not to open weird email attachments or IM links - JungleG
AVG - Kevin Bondelli
AVG on the laptop; Avira on the PC - Jasmin Smith
OS X. Never had one virus. - Brad Waller
Avast! - Rah(sheen)™
Brad, that you know of. - Alex Scoble CISSP
+1 Alex. And the thing of it is that AV alone isn’t enough. *shrug* Video was interesting but I’m definitely not in their target audience. - Jennifer Leggio
I am a big fan of trend micro’s products - Peter Ghosh
Symantec Corporate Edition /IBM laptop - work system - Susan Beebe
AVG works well for me. - Jason Huebel
AVG works very good for me - Joshua Smith
AVG for me as well. - Alex Vernon
ESET SmartSecurity - ChangeForge | Ken Stewart
Im just running with Windows Defender and good web viewing habits - Chacha
The reason why I use Avast! is because it’s audible and tells you when it’s updated and it warns you with a noise if you get a virus. - Molly, the Muse
So… what do you use? Are your files and data well-protected? Do you back them up regularly?

I use a PC (Vista) and have McAfee Total Protection. I havent had any viruses since I put it on. It is a very good AV, but, like with anything else, it has bugs. Hey, nothing is perfect.

OS 10 5 For PC: Antivir XP, Spyware Doctor, Spybot, Spyware Blaster, System Safe Gold to preserve integrity of system files Zone Alarm free with Spy Blocker., XP Anti Spy..
Spyware Doctor makes Windows Defender unnecessary.
Also use the Software Patch, Secunia and File Hippo to prevent exploits on unpatched software.
EZ Cleaner, NSW 2002, Norton Clean Sweep round out the routine.
Many years ago Chris advised adding the number 10000 to our email contacts to prevent trojans. It seems to work.
My PC is a 2002 Compaq with an AMD processor running XPSP2

AVG Free has kept me safe for a long while. I used to use Avast, but it really slowed down my entire system when I did.

I use Avira.
http://www.free-av.com/
It’s scored well on most major competitions and it’s free.
It was has 1 annoying popup ad a day, asking you if you would like to buy the suite.
Other than that it’s great, it’s quickly updated and doesn’t carry much memory load.

“So… what do you use? Are your files and data well-protected? Do you back them up regularly?”
Don’t use any anti-virus software. I paid for and used ClamXAV for 2 years, but it never found a single virus on my Mac, so I dumped it.
I use both Time Machine and SuperDuper! to provide 2 different kinds of file protection. Time Machine protects me against stupid deletion mistakes and SuperDuper! against disk failure.

I can’t believe no one has mentioned Trend. Trend’s PC-Cillin for the home and Trend Server Protect / OfficeScan for the office. It’s a great package, catches EVERYTHING and is updated more often than I change my socks.

I use Trend Micro PC-cillin on my desktop, and Avast on my two laptops. I tried AVG on my Vista Laptop but while I loved 7.5, 8.0 was an annoyance and a major drain so I went to Avast since I liked it on my XP Pro. But this is just the “antivirus” list. I use Webroot Spyspweeper on the dt, along with A2 Free and MalwareBytes. Spyware Terminator, SuperAntispyware, Spyware Doctor, A2 (Paid Version), are used in various combinations of 2 or 3 to layer my laptops’ protection.

I used AntiVir since 1996 (Free) which which detected 2 dangerous viruses in folders on a CD that Nortons missed on my Son’s PC
Last couple of years - Avira (paid). Avira is the new AntiVir.
http://www.free-av.com/
Also Spyware Doctor (without the anti virus portion) and,
latest Zone Alarm.
I tried AVG once, but found it takes over complete system and when I deleted AVG I had to edit remnants out from various parts of my PC. No Joy.
Have not had any trouble with viruses since 1992 with a 286 & Windows 3.0 after picking up 3 viruses on a floppy disc from a TAFE College in Gympie, Qld.au

But I should get anti virus for my self because I make lots of them for fun and than use them as pranks for my mac friends:D like this one here http://gecko.mrgeckosmedia.com/BlackOut.zip
I am going to make a better virus latter on to just scar people.

Under Windows (more often than not) I use Avast! Free Home Edition. What I value more than my antivirus is the fact that I don’t download questionable things from websites. I have yet to get a virus.
I also run under Ubuntu, though I don’t run antivirus there.

Call me insane but I actually run Windows Server 2008 without AV. I know its prudent to do so but the amount of websites and applications I use are limited and have all been checked before they were installed on my PC. I do however preload AVG Free onto all the machines I build and I suggest that if you surf a lot then AV is needed

I gave up on using Anti-virus software… I just use common sense these days. No email attachments, no scripts, no browsing “questionable” websites… I think that common sense can save you a lot of trouble in the long run, and can save you a few extra bucks with not having to worry about keeping subscriptions up.
OS factors in a lot also. ;p

I was originally using AVG Free 8.0. Recently, I realized that I didn’t really need the anti-spyware portion of the program since I have two other anti-spyware tools that do the job nicely. So I switched over to Avast to protect my Windows machines. Works well, plus I know when the database is updated.

What antivirus do i use? Well, the only one i can think of that’s even worth installing on your computer is “Avast!” antivirus. There are three reasons why i have this installed.
1. This antivirus is free which saves you money and time, and trust me the free version of this software is just as good as the pro version…so i wouldn’t get it.
2. The antivirus program does not take much CPU use room your computer and it is always running in the background without taking your CPU usages away from you, which is good for any PC to have
3. The program scans very efficiently and very thoroughly, meaning that hardly any viruses get in and penetrate your computer, which is always a plus. It also automatically updates your computer everyday that way you have the latest virus definitions everyday.
So as you can see, i like avast for there excellent service and simplicity to antivirus software becuase it gets the job done and works the best for me.
So have you any of you out on the Pirillo community have any thoughts on avast as well? if so, let me know :)

I use to have antivirus, but I don’t install anti-virus anymore.
I know what I download and where it comes from. I don’t do keygen/warez/torrents and only have a small number of apps on my machine.
I do however run a virus scan from a ‘rescue cd’ every couple of weeks - just for piece of mind.
But in over 10 years (mostly with AV) I’ve never been infected.
In fact the only viruses (or should that be virii?) that have been on my PC have been sent as email attachments - and it was pretty obvious to me that they were suspicious files.

Protect and clean your PC.
When searching for an antispyware scanner that will protect and clean your PC it can get a little confusing. There are so many available it’s hard to know which one will work the best. If you’re like me, you’ve probably tried a variety of them all and found they basically all find the same types of bugs. Through my experimenting I’ve found that the antispyware solution from Search-and-destroy at (Search-and-destroy) works the best. Search-and-destroy Antispyware cleans and protects my computer just as good as any scanner, it gets rid of those nasty bugs and it does it all for less than many of the others available.
