Instantbird is a nice application, and does a handful of things well; however there are other IM clients out there that do a much better job of corralling all of your messaging needs. My hands down favorite of the bunch is Digsby though -extremely easy to use, and unbelievably stable, considering the plethora of services that it puts into one little window.

What’s with all the hate on Digsby? The only thing I don’t like about it is that it is only available on Windows. It’s got a nice clean interface that’s easy to use and it does facebook & twitter. It’s certainly nicer than Pidgin (my preferred client on un*xes) on Windows. It doesn’t merge your contact lists if you have multiple accounts on the same IM network like Trillian did (God how I hated that! I spent hours separating my work contacts from my personal contacts after I uninstalled Trillian!).

It may not be as mature as other clients, but what do you expect? It’s a recent entry after all and it shows a lot of promise.
