There are a million places out there to buy your web hosting from. How do you know which is the right choice for you? What things should you keep in mind when choosing? These tips sent in by a community member should help ease your mind a bit.

Don’t buy what you don’t need. When buying a product, you buy it for what you want it to do, right? Hosting is no different. If it’s going to be an image hoster, why do you want a phpBB Board, or MediaWiki included? Consider how much traffic you expect to get, and look around.
Don’t be afraid to move your hosting around often. If there’s a better offer around in the short run, chances are you’re best taking it because by the time you roll around to needing to pay for hosting, you’ll still find some options which, for one year, are either hysterically cheap, or just plain free.
Look on the internet for voucher codes. If you think you’ve found the host for you, looked at their reputation, and decided ‘Yes, that’s who I want to go with’… take a look at their competitors again. A prime example of this is Dreamhost; their voucher codes can turn $100+ a year into $20 for the first year, with a domain name included.
If you’re getting free email, USE IT IF YOU CAN. Too many people still use hotmail addresses when they have hosting that provides them with email addresses. If you’re making a small business venture, a domain-name based address will say a lot more about your professionality than a hotmail, yahoo or aol email. I personally have one for Mail, MSN, Ebay and my Wii, so as to filter the unnecessary stuff as much as possible.
Always pay for your hosting up front initially. There’s nothing worse than changing providers and then realizing that your subscription payment is still recurring. Not only does it cause stress, but the problems that arise while getting the money back can make you wish you never tried them.

I am with 1and1 had no problems as of yet. It may not be the cheapest out there but its really good. Also if you don’t like Html ect all to complex? and want to make a easy website vary fast, head over to Moonfruit, its a flash based web builder, i found it some year ago and played around a little with it.

“FIRST FIRST” as you put it, is actually “1&1 Internet, Inc.” (pronounced “One and One”).

Yeah, that was my tips. Sorry I didn’t put my name down.

Currently I’m with one.com, since Dreamhost doesn’t allow multiple sign-ups and use of more than one voucher code per user. I switched due to tip number one; The first year was OK because it was cheap, but after that I switched. one.com charges a set-up fee, but that’s it (for the first year), after that, the total cost is about £20 per year. The space isn’t very big, but you get a theoretical unlimited bandwidth. The only sites they don’t allow to be hosted are download sites (their official standpoint is if most of your files are over 1Mb, they refuse to host it), so if you’re starting something, they’re ideal.

Plus, it’s the webhosting arm of Hewlett Packard, so at least you know they’ll be around for a long time.

does Webair/Godaddy/1and1 let you upload your own backgrounds and stuff? All I need is a domain, i can create the rest xD.

Hey Chris,

I just thought I would include a little comment in this bit about FREE web hosts (and domains). I know, I know… it is not for the professional, but I think it is absolutly perfect for the beginner that doesn’t want to get too into it until they have experimented a little. So, although I am sure the people who follow you already know this, this comment might show up in a google search and help someone else out. Two good free web hosts off the top of my head right now are Geocities and Freewebs. If you are more into the blog and don’t need a full web page, I would suggest WordPress, Blogger, or probably even a MySpace blog.
