VMware and iPhone Hacking

This caller had two questions for me! The first was that they are having a difficult time installing VMWare Tools in Linux inside a Virtual Machine. The second question dealt with iPhone Hacking.
I’ve had to do this before. You’re probably not going to run through a GUI installer. You’re going to drop into a terminal. I believe it’s VMware-install.pl is the command. VMware Fusion is a sponsor of ours here at the live show. The VWmware Tools software, which if installed in a Virtual Machine, is designed to help make the useability and virtual integration between the host machine and the virtual machine seamless. The Linux one is a little different. When installing, it mounts as a virtual CD. You should have a zip file on there. Drop to a command line within Linux, and CD to that directory.
The second question the caller had was “I am currently paying about $70 a month for the iPhone AT&T bill. I am wondering if I should unlock it, and go with another provider”? My answer is to stick with AT&T. If you run into any support issues in the future, you’re hosed. You have no options. It doesn’t make any sense to me. $70 is admittedly a lot of money. You have to do what you are comfortable with. I just don’t recommend Jailbreaking.

i think that people have been disillusioned to what a phone should do these days. text, call, mail and web are more than enough. playing games are just pointless gimmicks. if you want to play games on the go, buy a ds or a psp.

i wouldnt really reccomend hacking your iphone in any way! i had an iphone before, and i unlocked it just to say i have an “unlocked iphone” and one day outta nowhere the iphone froze! i had no choice but to connect to itunes and restart the iphone, and in the process BRICKING my iphone! it never worked again. so if u hack or unlocked your iphone in any way be prepared for the worst! im not saying its 100% chance its gunna happen but but out of nowere ur iphone can have a problem (such as freeze) and u will HAVE to reset it, and that may or may not go so good for u. i reccomend only hacking or unlocking if u really HAVE to, otherwise dont risk it if you like your phone. just a heads up, and sumthing to consider! :) once again, great vid chris!

I would never hax my iPhone, it is just way to risky! Apple tells you not to do it for a reason, because breaking your iPhone is very possible.

I currently have a jailbroken, unlocked iPhone. Fully functioning with the latest firmware, software, etc. Works like a charm. Although, i agree with chris that you shouldn’t do it in case you run into support issues. There were times i had to reset and i lost everything and it bricked. However, I was still able to get it back working. So i personally think its not that risky to jailbreak it. If you dont like it, backup ur stuff and reset. I love my iPhone. :D

Definitaly jailbreak your iphone its worth it, but use ZIPHONE because it allows you to unlock and relock your phone at will. So if you do run into problems just relock it and bring it to apple for their support.
